Tucked in the back of a strip mall off of Santa Monica Blvd, there is a small nook where you can literally find Nook Bistro named appropriately so. This restaurant was first discovered when I happened to live across the street and wanted to find a trusty restaurant with great dishes and was easy to get to. I hadn't been back in a number of years (at least three?) until last week where a last minute change in dinner plans led us back to this restaurant. This is their maple-mustard glazed organic half chicken with butternut squash-spinach risotto. You have to allow for 25 minutes for preparation. The chicken has a sweet glaze to it and the risotto is very cheesy and creamy so a word of warning, this is a heavy meal and comes fully loaded. Perfect if you are ready to eat a hearty meal!

Skinny Corn & Crab Bisque

I know I keep posting things with seafood, but when I have leftover food I try to find a way to use it. (See my post with those boiled crabs!) This recipe is a lower calorie version of a traditional corn and crab bisque. It is so good and as I would expect anything with crabs/boiled seafood to be - slightly spicy!

If late night snacking is a problem, try setting a definite END TIME for your eating each day.  Pick a time that you know you'll generally be done with dinner and make a commitment to yourself that you won't eat after that time.  This can really help limit the mindless eating that often happens while watching TV, or doing other activities in the evening (or at least help you to be more aware of it when it's happening). .

For example, if you usually are all finished with dinner by 7 PM, tell yourself that you won't eat anything after 7:30 PM each night.  And make it a firm rule.  Much of the snacking and eating in the evening is mindless eating from boredom, habit or whatever else.  Those calories count, too.

I used to regularly eat a bowl of cereal on Sunday evenings while my wife and I were watching TV around 10 PM after the kids were in bed.  It wasn't because I was hungry, but just something to do. And it wasn't really bad cereal, usually something like Honey Nut Cheerios with 1% milk, but it was still an extra 200-300 calories that I didn't need late at night.  It all adds up!

Loving the sunshine we are having at the moment, perfect smoothie weather! 🙌🏻☀️
This marbled smoothie was just made up of frozen bananas and berries, almond milk, almond butter, strawberry protein powder and @nutraorganics velvet latte blend (love adding their latte blends to smoothies!!) Who else doesn’t do any measuring when it comes to smoothies and just chucks a whole lot in and prays it turns out? Because that’s my method 😂

Brussels Sprouts — delicious simply roasted with olive oil, a little salt and pepper and fresh garlic. For a little kick, add cayenne pepper or a spicy mustard marinade. More importantly, add them to your diet regularly. Brussels sprouts are a member of the broccoli and collar greens family with similar nutrients important for skin and bone health and anti-aging. They contain antioxidants and other compounds that help prevent damage to the body at a cellular level. Now that I’m teaching more and more group fitness classes, it’s really making me appreciate the times I get to zone out and do my own personal workouts. In my classes I do a lot of full body strength movements at lighter weights. So for my own workouts I’ve been focusing more on bigger lifts, and less accessory movements. Let’s just put this out here. We have been trying to wean baby from night feeds for a week now and let me tell you it is hard af. I can’t believe this but omg looks like valor will never be off the boob ever,specially when I have to work and as soon as he sees me he wines until he gets a milk session 😂 so with that being said I think I might breast feed him until he is two years old lol hope not. Thank goodness Zack has been home this whole time and he is helping Valor fall asleep without the boob since that’s one of his big routine before bed. Nurse and fall asleep. Hey if you have any tips leave them down below because this kid goes to bed at around 8-9 pm and wakes up 3-4am to eat. So ether he has a fast metabolism and he is starving which he is bc he will not fall asleep until he gets the bottle or the boob. But I am trying so hard to break this habit. I think it might be that bc my brother and I and Zack have fast metabolisms and that’s why we stay pretty lean year round and we eat like pigs 🐷

Every year on Christmas Eve, my family celebrates the Feast of the 7 Fishes. It's an Italian-American holiday where we eat a meal where all the dishes have at least 7 different fish and seafood. Roman Catholics traditionally don't eat meat on the eve of a feast day, so instead they eat fish.

I looked up where the "7" comes from and found out that no one seems to know definitively. There's a lot of theories, such as that the number 7 is prominent throughout the bible. I also read that Christmas Eve is supposed to be a fasting day...yeah, my family doesn't do that. Whoops!

When @seabearwildsalmon sent me a package of all their ready-to-eat and smoked salmons, I immediately knew I had to develop a Feast of the 7 Fishes dish. Stuffed shells are a traditional Italian-American dish, so I thought this spin would make it extra relevant for the holiday.

1⃣ Eggs do not cause weight gain. In fact, eggs are great inclusions for a weight loss diet. Several studies have shown that egg breakfast causes more stable blood glucose and insulin response, while also suppressing ghrelin (the hunger hormone). It leads to an increased feeling of fullness and less calorie consumption over the next 24- 36 hours. .

2⃣ Chicken eggs are high in cholesterol, but recent studies show that cholesterol in food has little impact on the levels of cholesterol in your blood. Most cholesterol in the blood is made by the liver. Consuming one egg a day has in fact shown to reduce the risk of stroke by 12%.

3⃣ For long we have been told to discard the egg yolk and eat only the white for the protein. But the yolk is where all the nutrients are. Egg yolk is high in good fats, omega-3 fatty acids, and choline needed for normal brain function. Apart from this, it is also high in vitamins A, E, D, K and B vitamins (B2, B12, and folate). The yolk also contains a variety of minerals which are important for our bodies to function properly - these include selenium, phosphorus, iron, and iodine. Some of these nutrients like Vitamin D, choline, selenium and iodine are difficult to get in other foods.

Every time I make these babies, I wonder why I ever even bother to make any other cookie 🍪 They are THAT good. Dense, soft and chewy, with a perfect chocolate to dough ratio (which is a sh*t load of chocolate and just enough dough to hold it together)

The recipe is adapted from @cocobakes OG peanut butter cookies. I used almond butter and cut back on the sugar. Recipe and is as follows:
1 cup almond butter
1/2 cup coconut sugar 
2/3 cup @bobsredmill oat flour 
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup unsweet vanilla almond milk 
1/4 cup desiccated coconut (helps give that nice chew factor)  A generous amount of @enjoylifefoods dark chocolate chips 
Mix almond butter, coconut sugar  and almond milk. Add in oat flour, baking soda and coconut. Add in chocolate chips. Scoop heaping tablespoons of dough onto a lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 min at 350 degrees. Let sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cool surface lined with a baking sheet (aka counter). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Yum yum yummy!!! It’s BBQ time with Willy and Bets at Tobago Cays 😋. The most delicious lobster 🦞 was served with rice, potatoes, vegetables and plantain. All washed down with rum punch and vino of course🍹. Hope you all had as tasty a dinner as we did.

So it's Thursday and you've been "good" all week and then you remember you have plans with friends... That burger & fries is staring you in the face and you cave. 🍔🍟🍹#NBD

UNTIL - you say "eff it" - I already caved, might as well indulge on Friday... and Saturday. 🍕🍺🧁 I'll start over on Monday. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sound familiar?

Here's a thought - why does it have to be "one or the other"... "Good or bad" ??? This is something I'm slowly learning. I don't have to be 100% on my food choices and I don't have to stress myself out with workouts I dread. 🙅🏻‍♀️🙌🏻 Check this out:
1️⃣Stop starting over.
👉🏼This is something I struggle with. But no one is perfect and if you slip up... just dust yourself if and power through. 
2️⃣Stop rationalizing your choices
👉🏼If you decide to eat bad or have drinks... Own that and avoid the tendency to justify it in some way to make yourself feel better. 
3️⃣Change your thinking to "better or worse" rather than "good or bad".
👉🏼Wanna eat healthy and have your cake too? Instead of tossing it in the "bad" category, keep it as an option but make room for healthier choices.

I know you've got this - I got this too! 💁🏻‍♀️ I'm curious... Who else is challenging themselves to overcome these struggles BEFORE 2018 is over instead of "starting over" Jan 1st?

Kebabs are minced meat preparations that are extremely popular. There are various kinds... today we finished making some bone broth and had some boiled meat that was left after that. So.. we made some shami kebabs :).. These are delicate, flavorful and delicious. So below is the recipe.. do try!

250gm Ground meat, 1 egg
Ginger, garlic, onion, green chillies and green coriander. Optionally, add little bit of mint. 
2 tbsp ground chick peas. 
Dry spices: 1/2 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp chaat masala, 1/2 tsp Cumin, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder and salt to taste 
Sautee the ground chickpeas for a minute till it becomes fragrant.

Add meat, egg and half of the chopped onion, garlic, ginger etc and grind in a food processor. Then, take the meat out and mix the rest of the onion, garlic etc

Add 1 tbsp of ghee or oil and the ground chickpeas to the meat.

Add the dry spices and mix properly.

Make small patties and shallow fry. Serve with hot sauce!
