“A priest enters Bet Amanuel, one of the eleven rock-cut churches of Lalibela. The monolithic church complex is one of the most holy sites of Ethiopia, and has been an active religious shrine since the churches were built in the seventh to thirteenth century. If you ask me, that is what makes Lalibela so special: the churches are ancient, but still very much in use.”

Koma est une découverte récente. Ils s'étaient réfugiés dans ces montagnes pour échapper aux grandes invasions islamiques du Karem Bornou, et depuis lors, dans leur isolement, ils ont conservé leurs anciennes coutumes et habitudes.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church depicts Jesus and Mary slightly different than other (Western) churches, as you can see clearly on the picture above. The Ethiopian version of Mary on the left is some shades browner than the one on the right, and it’s also interesting to see that the Ethiopian version of baby Jesus has black, frizzy hair.
