Synopsis:
.
There are run-of-the-mill eccentric Californians, and then there's former detective Charlie Waldo.

Waldo, a onetime LAPD superstar, now lives in solitude deep in the woods, pathologically committed to owning no more than one hundred possessions. He has left behind his career and his girlfriend, Lorena, to pay self-imposed penance for an awful misstep on an old murder case. But the old ghosts are about to come roaring back.

There are plenty of difficult actors in Hollywood, and then there's Alastair Pinch.
Alastair is a onetime Royal Shakespeare Company thespian who now slums it as the "wise" Southern judge on a tacky network show. He's absurdly rich, often belligerent, and typically drunk--a damning combination when Alastair's wife is found dead on their living room floor and he can't remember what happened.
Waldo's old flame Lorena, hiding peril of her own, draws him toward the case, and Alastair's greedy network convinces Waldo to take it on. But after such a long time away from both civilization and sleuthing--and plagued by a confounding array of assailants who want him gone--Waldo must navigate complicated webs of ego and deceit to clear Alastair's name . . . or confirm his guilt. .

I’ve book dropped here before but Panera people feel like the type who would appreciate a free book, so I’m back 🤓

About the book -

Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she--or anyone--saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips.

Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings--massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends.

Yet it's immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp's twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present.

And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price.

I’m excited to dive into this thriller - it sounds really fun and different. It’s described as “a razor-sharp, exquisitely paced, madly fun debut thriller that gleefully lampoons Hollywood culture and introduces the highly eccentric yet brilliant ex-detective gone rogue: Charlie Waldo.”

Full synopsis below! Thank you @duttonbooks for a copy of the book!

We decided to fly out (yesterday) for a short family trip at the last minute so I’ll be out/offline most of today/tomorrow!

Along with Omarosa (which I'm reading at work on my lunch breaks), I'm a third of a way through this. It's too nice and normal for what I normally read! Change (and the book!) are good #theshortestwayhome #miriamparker #fiction #august2018 #duttonbooks #penguinrandomhouse
After a full day of applesauce making, a late dinner of chicken with tomatoes and olives, rice, peas, and — of course — applesauce while I finish the last few pages of THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis. Like her two previous books (THE DOLLHOUSE, THE ADDRESS), Davis blends history and fiction to create a wonderful picture and story of a New York City classic location, this time Grand Central Station. Color me a super fan of Davis. While I’m happy to now live in the Pacific Northwest, her books bring back many great memories of my years living within a short train ride of Grand Central Station and the magic of The City. #themasterpiece #fionadavis @fionajdavis #duttonbooks @duttonbooks #thedollhouse #theaddress #grandcentralstation #nyc #newyorkcity #women #grandcentralschoolofart #beeskneescocktail #roaringtwenties #roaring20s #prohibition #trainstation #booksandfood #readingwithdinner #historicalfiction

It’s a rainy Monday, but I somehow managed to get a few minutes without rain for a photo shoot! Don’t you just love it when things work out in your favor?
.
Today’s #pancakepirateaugust prompt is short stack — favorite duology, and it got me thinking about Just One Day and Just One Year. This is my favorite contemporary set, though there is technically a short sequel…but it’s so tiny I don’t consider it another novel. If you like books involving travel, romance, and missed connections, this is a series you should check out.
.
A few other challenges for today:
.
#readwithusaugust2018: reading in public

#inflameslit: hard places: Emotionally speaking, Just One Day and Just One Year both deal with some pretty powerful stuff — depression, grief, loss of sense of self, and more.

#inspiredaugust: nature

#bgaugust2018: naked book

Hello my bookish friends!! Happy Monday!! •••••
QOTD: What genre have you been reading lately?
•••••
I seem to be gravitating to thrillers lately. I snagged this copy of @riley.sager The Last Time I Lied from @bookofthemonth a few months ago and read it with my Thriller Ladies Club group. The book was a bit slow for me at times, but there were some twists and turns that I didn’t anticipate. I gave it a 4 star rating even though others in my group gave it a 5. I REALLY enjoyed Final Girls and I know how tough a sophomore book has it to keep up with an incredible debut. Have you read either of these? What did you think?

If you love historical fiction but also a nice breezy read, this is the book for you! I mean it as a compliment when I say that this was like the suburban home of books: it was comfortable and safe, with just enough drama and action to keep things interesting!

I specifically loved learning more about the history of Grand Central Station- oops, Terminal- and the art scene in the 1930s.
Thank you @duttonbooks for sending me this thoroughly enjoyable read!

Thank you so much @katcarter00 and @duttonbooks for providing my free copy of THE MASTERPIECE by @fionajdavis - all opinions are my own.
.
I absolutely adore this book! Davis is an exquisite, talented writer. Set in New York City with the rich history of the Grand Central Station as the backdrop, this dazzling, vibrant story is told in a dual narrative, alternating between the 1920s and 1970s. Twenty-five-year-old Clara Darden is an aspiring artist during the 1920s and Virginia Clay is a recently divorced mother in the 1970s, both working at Grand Central Terminal in different eras and both trying to make their place in the world where the odds are stacked against them. Clara is a very talented artist and works at the Grand Central School of Art as an instructor during an era when the terminal was a gorgeous piece of architecture and the city’s highlight, but one she day vanishes without a trace. Virginia works as a clerk at the terminal’s information desk at the now, run down, soon-to-be demolished train station, but eventually becomes involved in the fight to save the terminal. I was glued to the pages and absolutely loved these characters.
.
This is a dazzling, enchanting story of two incredibly strong female characters, and includes fascinating information about the Grand Central Terminal both during its heyday and during its demise. Ultimately it is filled with mystery and intrigue. And I especially enjoyed all of the historical artistic details and the inner workings of such an amazing landmark. I am always here for stories with not only well drawn out characters but also those where the setting plays a major character as well. I was completely captivated by both eras as the 1920s is so glitzy and glamorous but I also really love the seventies...um David Bowie and fashion. I was engrossed as I read the separate timelines but as the story progressed they converge into one fantastic ending and I fell in love with Davis as an author. THE MASTERPIECE is outstanding and I will definitely read THE ADDRESS next! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@duttonbooks #partner for gifting me this book..I don't share my political stance with people, but reading this book and with our current president, it was terrifying! This was a beast of a book, and toy outside.ofy realm of reading. However I'm glad Inrrad it, and I've discovered political thrillers are actually pretty good!! 🖤
"The president has gone way too far. . . . These are practically dictatorial methods we're talking about." Sixteen years before Democratic Senator Bruce Jansen was elected president of the United States, a PR stunt brought together five very different people: fourteen-year-old Dorothy "Doggie" Rogers, small-town sheriff T. Perkins, single mother Rosalie Lee, well-known journalist John Bugatti, and the teenage son of one of Jansen's employees, Wesley Barefoot. In spite of their differences, the five remain bonded by their shared experience and devotion to their candidate.
For Doggie, who worked the campaign trail with Wesley, Jansen's election is a personal victory: a job in the White House, proof to her Republican father that she was right to support Jansen, and the rise of an intelligent, clear-headed leader with her same ideals. But the triumph is short-lived: Jansen's pregnant wife is assassinated on election night, and the alleged mastermind behind the shooting is none other than Doggie's own father.
When Jansen ascends to the White House, he is a changed man, determined to end gun violence by any means necessary. Rights are taken away as quickly as weapons. International travel becomes impossible. Checkpoints and roadblocks destroy infrastructure. The media is censored. Militias declare civil war on the government. The country is in chaos, and Jansen's former friends each find themselves fighting a very different battle, for themselves, their rights, their country . . . and, in Doggie's case, the life of her father, who just may be innocent.

It was awesome to meet @fionajdavis today at @murderbooks and hear her talk about the inspiration for her latest book The Masterpiece! I also picked up my copy and can’t wait to read it! I absolutely loved her other two books and expect nothing less from this one! Check it out!

The Shortest Way Home was just the light, refreshing read I needed after a string of heavier books. Hannah Greene arrives in wine country for a get-away with her boyfriend before moving to New York and entering the corporate world. She falls in love with Sonoma and suddenly, she sees a new life for herself and decides to chart a different course. I loved the beautiful setting, the characters, and the strong female lead. This was a fun, witty read that left me thirsty for wine and ready for a trip to Sonoma! 🍷 For me, The Shortest Way Home was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars. Thank you @duttonbooks for this advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

In honor of @justinbieber and his love for @timkellernyc and his book The Meaning of Marriage, here is a #bookstack of my Keller books.
.
I haven’t read all of them yet, but I have read most of them. My favorite is Every Good Endeavor. There is a ton of wisdom in that book for your outlook on everyday life and your place in it.
.
Keller focused in on the book of Esther and the fact that all of these amazing things happened to her, so that she would be in position to save her people from massacre. Mordecai tells her as much when he says, “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” None of us know how God is working, but He is working. He works in the little things, just as much as the big things.
.
To think that God is concerned with me and the minute details of my life is humbling and demands a response from my life. Keller reminded me that there isn’t a day that God is wasting.
.
Everyone loves some TK, right? What’s your favorite TK book? Or do you want to read The Meaning of Marriage with Bieber?

Yesterday I attended an Author Luncheon at Towne Center Books. The lovely Fiona Davis was the featured guest and she shared wonderful tidbits she learned while researching her newest novel "The Masterpiece" as well as fun stories about her other two books "The Dollhouse" and "The Address." I found myself wishing I could sit with her over coffee and just chat for hours! Sadly, I had to race to work but I'm so glad I got the chance to meet this incredible woman.

Many thanks to @duttonbooks for providing my free copy of THE WASHINGTON DECREE by @jussiadlerolsen - all opinions are my own.
.
This is an action-packed political thriller that at times is eerily realistic, especially during today’s political climate. And even though this book is a BRICK, it read very quickly!
.
Virginia Governor, Bruce Jansen’s first wife was stabbed to death at a public event in China. Sixteen years later, on election night, his second wife, Mimi Todd Jansen was gunned down and killed. Jansen is traumatized but assumes office as President anyway. The President makes some radical changes such as switching off the Internet, banning guns for private citizens, gagging the media, lining military in the streets, and increasing surveillance of citizens. Paramilitary militia groups are in uprising because of these decisions, but a number of Jansen’s cabinet support him. Or at least they pretend to, as some of the political leaders don’t say outwardly that they disagree. The father of Dorothy “Doggie” Rogers, who is on Jansen’s staff, is arrested for arranging Mimi Todd Jansen’s murder...but is he the guilty party?
.
Alder-Olsen is a very talented writer, but my only concern is the book probably needs to be cut down around 50 pages. The characters are extremely well-developed and I could see every scene vividly in my imagination. This book would definitely make a great movie! The parallels to this story and the current U.S. president are very interesting as Jansen was a wealthy business man who overwhelmingly took the office of president, not to mention the act of making radical decisions such as using executive orders to change the foundation of freedoms and laws. And for the record, this novel was originally written in 2006 and was just now translated to English - so it’s pretty spooky. THE WASHINGTON DECREE is very fast-paced, incredibly gripping, and entirely plausible with a very exciting ending! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you @berkleypub for gifting me this book. It matches fabulously with my house! Don't you think? T
I read this book last week, and while I it wasn't my favorite there are so many of you guys who loved this one. I appreciated the unique format and the plot. I would pinpoint it more of a domestic mystery. Is that a thing? 🏘️🏘️
Synopsis- There's nothing unusual about a new family moving in at 91 Trinity Avenue. Except it's her house. And she didn't sell it.
When Fiona Lawson comes home to find strangers moving into her house, she's sure there's been a mistake. She and her estranged husband, Bram, have a modern coparenting arrangement: bird's nest custody, where each parent spends a few nights a week with their two sons at the prized family home to maintain stability for their children. But the system built to protect their family ends up putting them in terrible jeopardy. In a domino effect of crimes and misdemeanors, the nest comes tumbling down.
Now Bram has disappeared and so have Fiona's children. As events spiral well beyond her control, Fiona will discover just how many lies her husband was weaving and how little they truly knew each other. But Bram's not the only one with things to hide, and some secrets are best kept to oneself, safe as houses.

I was introduced to Riley Sager for the first time through BOTM when I read The Last Time I Lied and immediately became a fan. I decided to read this gem, Final Girls on the flight home from vacation on Sunday and quickly devoured it! It kept me guessing up until the very end. As soon as I thought I had it figured out, I was questioning another character before I knew it! Definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good thriller with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars! Now I will patiently wait for Sager to publish another book for me to obsessively read! ⏰🤓📖 #duttonbooks #rileysager #finalgirls #bookworm #booklover #bookstagram #lovetoread #summerreads #thrillerbooks #igreads #bookaholic #bibliophile #booknerd #goodreads #bookphotography #ilovebooks

Synopsis:
.
The president has gone way too far. . . . These are practically dictatorial methods we're talking about.

Sixteen years before Democratic Senator Bruce Jansen was elected president of the United States, a PR stunt brought together five very different people: fourteen-year-old Dorothy "Doggie" Rogers, small-town sheriff T.

••• The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager ••• We got in some much needed time in the sun this weekend after a very rainy week in Georgia. 🌞 As a big fan of Final Girls, I went into this one with big expectations. Though it started a little slow for me, it totally shocked me a few times and I enjoyed the read! I would consider this one more a mystery than a thriller ✨ Emma Davis attended Camp Nightingale when she was 13. The three other girls staying in her cabin disappear one night, never to be seen again. The camp shuts down amidst the tragedy and drama, only to be reopened fifteen years later. Emma finds herself back at camp in the same cabin, only this time she’s an instructor, and she’s starting her own investigation into her friends’ disappearance. 🏕🏔🌗 #thelasttimeilied #rileysager #hattiesbookshelf #mysterybook #botm #bookofthemonth #duttonbooks #summerreading #poolside #readmorebooks #bookworm #bookstagram

@megustaleerperu

Happy Sock Sunday! I am *finally* getting around to posting my July wrap-up. Only 5 days late 🤷🏻‍♀️ Every book I finished last month was an audiobook. I’m just happy that I was able to read one way or another!

Are you a wine drinker? 🍷 I sure am, so I was especially excited to partner with @duttonbooks to feature THE SHORTEST WAY HOME by @miriamparker today -- a book about learning to be your true self, set in California's wine country. The fact that it's both funny & heartfelt is just a bonus!
.
.
You can learn more & pick up a copy by clicking the link in my bio. Here is the official synopsis:
.
.
After years of dreaming of and working toward a life more stable than the one she grew up in, Hannah is finally about to have everything she ever wanted. With a high-paying job, an apartment in Manhattan, and a boyfriend about to propose, all she and Ethan have to do is make it through the last couple of weeks of grad school, and the future they had planned will be theirs to keep.
.
.
But when they take a romantic weekend trip to Sonoma, and Hannah is spontaneously offered a marketing job at the first (and seemingly financially unstable) winery they visit and doesn't immediately refuse, their meticulously planned forever comes crashing down around them. And then Hannah impulsively does the unthinkable--she turns down her job in New York and decides to stay in California.
.
.
Abandoning your dream job and life shouldn't feel this good. But for Hannah, it is an eye-opening experience; and she realizes that maybe, after all her dream-chasing, she hasn't actually been caring for herself. And this new life certainly seems like a dream come true--living in a picturesque cottage overlooking a vineyard in lush Sonoma; new friends with pasts and hopes the likes of which she's never encountered before; and William, the handsome son of the winery owners and an aspiring film director who captures Hannah's heart only to leave the very city she let go.
.
.
The mission to rescue the failing winery becomes a mission to rescue Hannah from the image of herself she thought she wanted. The young girl who ached to escape Iowa and leave her past behind for a glamorous life is now given the chance to come to terms with the upbringing that made her who she is. .

You pay for the sins of the father as the old saying goes, and Lane Fielding goes. Upon her return, two girls go missing, one of them her oldest daughter. Is there a serial killer at work? Or is Lane being punished for her father’s alleged involvement in abusing numerous boys at the nearby school?
.
.
People ask how I can read so fast. It’s easy when the book is as engrossing as this one. I greatly enjoyed this read. A complex, well-written and strongly executed novel. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ .

Few things about this:
1. This book 😍 what a well-written thriller; I really enjoyed this one! This one gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me. Check out my Goodreads for full review.
2. Tea is for Texas’ Texas dirty chai tea is LIFE. Turns out it’s only sold in 1 oz packages and after finishing my first cup I mayyybe went online and ordered like 16 packages to be shipped to me ASAP. 🤷🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️

“It's called two truths and a lie. The game was Vivian's favorite. She said you could learn more about a person from their lies than their truths. At the time, I didn't believe her. I do now."
•••
Going into reading this book I had not read Sager's previous book Final Girls so I wasn't sure what to expect... but I loved it! I have never been to a sleep away camp in the summer but the way he described Camp Nightingale was like the camp was a whole character in itself. It was eerie and creepy (like you were waiting for the stories told around the fire to come true). And when he threw in the asylum plot it amped up that creep factor even more. I loved the alternating storylines and how if you weren't paying attention you could confuse them. Vivian was a character you loved to hate while Emma was the best version of an unreliable narrator. I couldn't tell if she was always telling us the truth but it also felt like her grip on reality at times was slipping so much that you just had to question everything. Speaking of question everything... you definitely question EVERYONE! Sager did a brilliant job of making you point the finger at pretty much ever person in the book and gave you twists to the very last page. I didn't figure out any of the twists before they were revealed (which is pretty uncommon for me) so I was on the edge of my seat reading as fast as my eyeballs would allow. I was ALMOST a tiny bit let down as I neared the end thinking I needed more but then BAM that last chapter went above and beyond what I was expecting.
•••
I cannot say enough about just how good this book is and I am dying for more info on it being turned into a movie! After one book I am 100% a Sager fan and cannot wait to read his previous book while I await whatever he writes next.
•
🤷🏼‍♀️ Have you read either of these books? Which was your favorite?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a woman returns to her childhood home in the small town where she grew up to a not entirely warm welcome, where dark secrets and disappearances of young girls abound.
.
.
This one is different. I’m a quarter of the way through this tautly paced psychological thriller. It’s great.

Happy Thursday, y’all! We are so close to the weekend 🍾
Today I’m finishing up The Last Time I Lied while trying out a new poke place in town 🤤 yes, please!
Is it really eating alone if you have a good book? Either way, I’m a fan 😊

I'm going to leave the synopsis down below in the comments, but here's a link to check out the book: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/555301/the-shortest-way-home-by-Miriam-Parker/9781524741860 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛

Ok, I definitely enjoyed this better than Mad. I think going into it, knowing what I was getting myself into helped. While definitely still out there, I’ve become fond of Alvie and her batshit crazy ways. Her inner monologue is freaking hilarious. Equal parts annoying and lovable, I can’t help but power through this book. And lord help the next person she runs into! 😂

Full review will be up on Goodreads along with an #allthebookreviewa blog post tomorrow! 👩🏻‍💻 #wtrgreviews .

“Alvie Knightly flees Sicily for a suite at the Ritz after her not-so-playful sibling rivalry ends in murder.
Beautiful, spoiled Beth may be out of the way, but Alvie's discovering what happens when you steal your twin's identity. Especially now Beth's body has been found. The police aren't the only ones Alvie has to worry about. Her hot new boyfriend has vanished, along with every penny of their stolen riches.
But Alvie has never shied away from a challenge. She pursues the traitor to Rome in a life-or-death game of cat and mouse. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned - but can Alvie get revenge before her own crimes catch up with her?”

“That was one thing that I was realizing more and more as I got older, that you can change lots of cosmetic things about your life. You can get a graduate degree and have your pick of cities to live in and careers to pursue. You can move from coast to coast, from apartment to house to apartment to cottage and back again. But at the end of the day, you’re still yourself. I was still the slightly shy book-reading girl who wanted more. The one who would sit on the front steps of our small house on an unremarkable street in Winthrop and wish I lived in the bigger house with the nicer yard one block over. Was I always going to be that way? Was there ever a point when it would be enough? I didn’t want to always be striving, but I also didn’t want to be bored. And it wasn’t about who my partner was; it was about me. How to figure out my own internal rhythm so that I was satisfied. Not because of anything that anyone else did for me, because of what I did for myself.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Between the wine (and food!), the Sonoma vineyard setting, and all the wrestling between the shoulds and wants of life, I found this an easy, engrossing read and plan to post a full review, soon! ✨

Happy Publication Day to THE SHORTEST WAY HOME by Miriam Parker 🎉🎉🎉 This novel tells the story of Hannah, a recent business school graduate who gives up a high paid job in New York City to take a job helping a struggling winery in Sonoma, California. This is a feel good story of a young woman struggling to find her path and where she wants it to take her. I loved the humor throughout the book and that Hannah isn’t looking to find herself through someone else. I give this sweet summertime read 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5. Many thanks to the publisher for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a heartwarming story of a woman who sheds expectations in order to claim her own happy ending. To learn more or purchase a copy click on the link in my bio! .
SUMMARY:
After years of dreaming of and working toward a life more stable than the one she grew up in, Hannah is finally about to have everything she ever wanted. With a high-paying job, an apartment in Manhattan, and a boyfriend about to propose, all she and Ethan have to do is make it through the last couple of weeks of grad school, and the future they had planned will be theirs to keep.

The mission to rescue the failing winery becomes a mission to rescue Hannah from the image of herself she thought she wanted. The young girl who ached to escape Iowa and leave her past behind for a glamorous life is now given the chance to come to terms with the upbringing that made her who she is. .

Today was “back to school shopping” day so that meant an early morning reading sesh before the craziness began. Four pairs of shoes and tons of glue sticks and colored pencils later, I’m finally chilling out with this book again tonight. I’m very intrigued! Riley Sager does an awesome job at foreshadowing just enough to keep me interested but guessing at the same time. Love it! @bookofthemonth always nails it with their picks so I know I’ll love it! #thelasttimeilied #dailybook #dailypic #thatswhatsheread #duttonbooks #botm #summerreading

I have been trying to do the writing thing these last few days and oh my Lord, writing is like trying to wrangle a nine legged beast with four heads, six tales, and the attention span of a peanut. ✍
"Squirrel!"
"Fire and death from above!"
"Wait, who's at war with who again?"
*Scrolls through bookstagram*
"This character comes from where?"
"Wait, no, stop, this character is supposed to be my villain, stop trying to make them good!"
*Cries over TBR*
"Is it time for a snack?"
*Writes six words, rewards self with three episodes of Netflix*
"Look at me, such a good write, much productive." 🙃
✍
All of which means that I didn't take any new photos. 😅 Here, have an old one of the book that I won from @duttonbooks back in April (many thanks!). Somewhere between 3.5 ⭐ and 4 🌟 (I'm still thinking it over, months later, and deciding), and a book I flew through on the plane to DC in April, don't miss @olivia_kiernan_author 's debut "Too Close to Breathe."

REVIEW! [Spoiler free]
"An Absolutely Remarkable Thing"
by Hank Green
4/5 stars
-----
What a weird and wonderful book. I loved it. This fresh, fast-paced debut novel is entirely Hank: imaginative, effervescent, a little science-y and full of heart. Its tone is so light and approachable, and its plot flows along so smoothly, you almost don't feel yourself getting pulled by the undercurrent of more complex themes that Hank is exploring here.
-
This novel is both entertaining and timely. From the first page, we're enfolded in a sort of whimsical mystery. That mystery becomes the basis for unveiling larger themes: the impact of fame and its inherent power, how humanity reacts when faced with remarkable things, and the way those remarkable things can be ambiguous or neutral canvases on which we project are own motivations. It also deals with the contradictions of fame (wanting to use your 'superhuman' influence for good while simultaneously being destructive--and disappointingly 'human'). There is a moral at the heart of this story, a nuanced one that is rooted in complicated feelings about media, politicized communities, and self-importance. But (classic Hank), the story manages to have a moral without moralizing. This book is fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
-
"An Absolutely Remarkable Thing" will be published by @duttonbooks on September 25th. Read it cover to cover. The final paragraph of the Acknowledgments section is some of the finest acknowledging I've seen. (Photo above)

Thank you @wendykaran for getting this book into my hands, and for giving me my very own Carl!

But (classic Hank), the story manages to have a moral without moralizing. This book is fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously. - "An Absolutely Remarkable Thing" will be published by @duttonbooks on September 25th. Read it cover to cover. The final paragraph of the Acknowledgments section is some of the finest acknowledging I've seen. (Photo above) - Thank you @wendykaran for getting this book into my hands, and for giving me my very own Carl!
The Shortest Way Home by @miriamparker is a beautiful story about a woman who sheds her exceptions to find her own happy ending. Summary:
After years of dreaming of and working toward a life more stable than the one she grew up in, Hannah is finally about to have everything she ever wanted. With a high-paying job, an apartment in Manhattan, and a boyfriend about to propose, all she and Ethan have to do is make it through the last couple of weeks of grad school, and the future they had planned will be theirs to keep.

The mission to rescue the failing winery becomes a mission to rescue Hannah from the image of herself she thought she wanted. The young girl who ached to escape Iowa and leave her past behind for a glamorous life is now given the chance to come to terms with the upbringing that made her who she is.

What a dark compulsive thriller! By the end it, I felt like I was going to have nightmares 😳 My only regret is not bumping this up sooner on my TBR list. This hauntingly addicted novel explores two truths and a lie, mean girls, revenge, and summer camp. Highly recommend picking this up if you haven’t done so already!
Thanks to @duttonbooks for providing me a free ARC.

“Anybody can look at you. It's quite rare to find someone who sees the same world as you.“ It's such an amazing book❤ It definitely follows the authors own description of his work, "I write about how plot get's interrupted by character" (loosely quoted) Still I kept reading because his style of writing catches me every time. The story in this one doesn't really live up to some of those in his other books. I marked lot's of passages as usual when reading his work. The book had something special, which may originate from the more personal background he has to the main topic. I think it's more a book for fans or at least people that don't expect a second tfios. The book provides a unique kind of style which isn't found as often in ya novels. It's definitely very interesting for people who want to understand OCD through reading about a limited, personal experience with this illness.
