I admit, when I first got into fitness, it was because I wanted to change the way I look. As a woman who's naturally skinny, I find it difficult to put on weight. I resorted to fitness to help me gain those curves that I wished I had. -
I started with bodybuilding, and I used to save photos of different women that I wanted to look like. I wanted this six-pack, this butt, and those back dimples. Bodybuilding was all I knew, but I didn't educate myself properly on it, until one day, I injured my lower back, and that is when I stopped going to the gym altogether.
-
In attempts to get rid of my back pain, I started doing yoga in my room everyday, and hanging on anything I could to decompress my spine. It worked, the pain was gone, and this is where I found my love for yoga and calisthenics.

I started caring more about how my body felt in certain poses, and how much stronger I was getting, rather than caring how this exercise will change my appearance.

My intentions for working out changed from hating how my body looks and working out to change it, to loving my body and doing what makes me feel best. Only when I stopped obsessing over it, my body finally started to change for the first time. -
My body never looked like those images that I've saved, but it looks like the best version of my own body. I'm so happy with the way I look now, but more importantly I'm thankful that I've learned to love my body along the process. That made the biggest difference 🙏🏼

It is soo important to stretch your muscles PROPERLY. Quick tips:
-
1. We are talking STATIC stretching today (stretch the muscle and hold).
Another approach is DYNAMIC stretching - lengthening your muscles through dynamic movement (more on it in one of the next posts)
-
2. STATIC stretching  is done either after your training, or on its own. DON'T do static stretching before your workout. You do DYNAMIC stretching before training.

3. Always warm up before you stretch. Muscles can increase their functional range of motion by 30% when warm. And they are more likely to get injured when not.
-
4. You can stretch to the point of slight discomfort, but never to the point of pain. Why? Because if you stretch so much that it hurts, your muscles will contract & decrease their range of motion to prevent potential tears & injury (your body is smart).
-
5. Never hold the stretch for longer than 90sec. Ideally you would hold the first stretch for about 30 sec (like a "warm up" to loosen up the muscle) - release - and then go back into a deeper stretch for 60 seconds.
(we're talking general population, if you are a contortionist/gymnast it's a different story)

KNEE PAIN WITH SQUATS 🏋🏻⬇️

If you have pain at the bottom of a squat or just every time you bend your knee, you may be lacking tibial internal rotation. As you knee moves from full extension into flexion, it will "unlock" by rotating from an external rotated position, into one of internal rotation.
.
We need tibial internal rotation because it allows for you knees to move over your toes in a squat without your feet spinning out.
.
It's a great exercise for someone who can't get their knees over their toes or have excessive toe out with squatting.

You're in the middle or your workout session 🏋️‍♀️and suddenly you feel sharp or medium back pain. What to do about it and what can be the cause❓

Several different factors can be attributed to low back pain. It could be:
.
✅ tissue tightness
✅ improper lifting form
✅ too much weight or
✅ improper posture.
.
If you plan on doing a compound barbell movement, you’ll need to do a movement preparation session with dynamic movements and soft tissue work beforehand and many people don’t do that.
.
✅Sitting in a chair 💻 for eight hours followed by treadmill running isn’t the proper way to prepare for lifting.
✅Also, a lack of core muscle recruitment for the lift that you’re about to perform can cause lower back pain.
.
How to relieve sudden back pain?
.
✅Get into a good posture–have your head on top of your rib cage and rib cage on top of your pelvis. That usually will relieve some of it.
✅Try squeezing your glutes, and stretching your hip flexor and hamstrings.
✅If pain continues, try using a foam roller.
✅If you still feel pain and stiffness in your lower back, stop your workout, give it a rest, put warming or cooling cream or plaster.
✅Try to avoid exercises that put pressure on your lower back for 1-2 weeks until you feel better.
✅ If it still continues, go to see the doctor.
