Steely Dan - Time Out Of Mind (from their seventh studio album Gaucho performed live at Charlotte 2006)
"The Perfect Musical antiheroes for the Seventies.."
Steely Dan digagas oleh 2 orang musisi asal amerika pada tahun 1972, yakni Walter Becker (Guitar, Bass, Backing Vocal) dan Donald Fagen (Keyboards, Lead Vocal). Mereka memadukan musik Jazz, Rock, RnB, dan Pop Tradisional dan merekam album - album mereka bersama musisi - musisi session. Steely Dan telah berhasil menjual albumnya tak kurang dari 40 juta copy di seluruh dunia dan mereka dilantik di museum Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pada bulan Maret tahun 2001. VH1 memasukan Steely Dan di posisi 82 dalam daftar 100 Greatest Musical Artist of All Time. Tanggal 3 September tahun lalu, Walter Becker meninggal dunia sehingga saat ini hanya menyisakan Fagen sebagai original member dari Steely Dan.
Time Out Of Mind rilis di album ke 7 Steely Dan, Gaucho pada tahun 1980. Dengan sifat Becker dan Fagen yg sangat perfeksionis dlm menggarap album, Gaucho melibatkan tak kurang dari 42 musisi berbeda termasuk Mark Knopfler dari Dire Straits yg mengisi solo gitar di lagu Time Out Of Mind. Gaucho menghabiskan waktu selama 1 tahun. Album ini juga menjadi album terakhir Steely Dan sebelum akhirnya hiatus selama 20 tahun.
This one #steelydan#goodmusic#donaldfagen . Still on my steely Dan week.album 'the royal scam'. My favorite tracks : 'kid charlamagne(sampled by Kanye west on' champion' though steely weren't fans of rap music) and' don't take me alive'.. The latter influenced my songwriting to a point, the cryptic, dark portrayal of a get away situation makes me just admire their nerves of 'steel'. @smooth981 @smoothgenie @rachelperrymusic @steely.ed @jazzandconversations
Still on my #steelydan week something... Rest in peace @walterbecker. This release ' two against nature( 2000) reveals a slightly subtled down steely dan nevertheless with the same mashed up jazzy rock feel they r Kwn for. Standouts on this for me are' my cousin dupri', 'almost gothic' and the positive jazzed out 'negative girl'. #cdcollector#donaldfagen#goodmusic#musicdenim#rock @prestjazzclub @firstname.lastname@example.org @rachelperrymusic
It's a pleasant late summer evening in September - and a perfect time for a #VinylAndBeerSunday . I have the Dallas Cowboys game playing with the sound off - and spinning a clean copy of the classic Jazz/Rock album from STEELY DAN. As a child of the Seventies, I can say that there was a time when STEELY DAN's music was played all over the radio - and that was especially true after AJA was released in 1977. There are monster hits like AJA, DEACON BLUES, PEG, and JOSIE. It's almost the perfect disc to play on a late summer evening when Fall is making it's presence known all around us. Days like these call for jazzy, funky, and quirky music with a touch of melancholy. I have accompanied these tunes with a new (to me) brew from NINKASI BREWING COMPANY. Their TRICERATOPS DOUBLE IPA is a earthy hoppy beer with lots of malt and a clean finish. I simply think that it's a great beer - and enjoying every sip. So...what are you listening to tonight? What are you drinking? #music#vinyl#vinylcollection#listeningparty#steelydan#aja#1977#peg#donaldfagen#deaconblues#beer#craftbeer#ninkasibrewing#eugeneoregon#oregonbeer#beerstagram#beerselfie#beermusic#ipa#doubleipa @sandandstain @ninkasibrewing
It’s Day 16 of the #comedyvinylchallenge “For Spins & Giggles”, as presented by @championship_vinyl_shop & @thevinyldoctor. The comedy is “Anchorman” and the theme is “goes great with scotch scotch scotch”. (If I were in charge of this Challenge, i would’ve selected what “pairs well with a CARTON of MILK on a hot day while severely depressed”, but whatever. To each their own).
I selected Steely Dan’s 1977 masterpiece “Aja”, with specific attention to “Deacon Blues.” The chorus is “Drink scotch whiskey, all night long ..... and die behind the wheel.” But I didn’t choose it because the word “scotch” was in it.... Deacon Blues is just a perfect scotch-drinking song (well, to be honest, just about every Steely Dan song is perfect for drinking scotch. But this one is extra perfect.)
Anyway, Deacon Blues is my favorite Dan tune, and maybe in my top ten of all songs. The idea behind the song, as co-founder Donald Fagen stated: "... if a college football team like the University of Alabama could have a grandiose name like the 'Crimson Tide', then the NERDS and LOSERS should be entitled to a grandiose name as well."
Fagen went on to say the song is “autobiographical in that it reflected the dreams of both [he] and Becker about becoming jazz musicians while they were living in the suburbs". Characterized as a "loser" by Becker, the song's subject was meant to reflect "... a broken dream of a broken man living a broken life".
As for the name “Deacon”, unfortunately it has nothing to do with my alma mater’s (Wake Forest) mascot - The Demon Deacons. But for years I’ve pretended like it does. Instead it came from an NFL player Deacon Jones.... Fagen & Becker just heard that name a lot on the news at the time.
A quote from The Wall Street Journal:
“As midlife-crisis songs go, Steely Dan's ‘Deacon Blues’ ranks among the most melodic and existential."
I still can’t fathom how Steely Dan has been labeled as “yacht music.” Last I checked, dark, neurotic, penniless alcoholics singing about failure, suicide, prostitutes, and drug dealers aren’t part of the yacht scene.
“You ate a whole wheel of cheese? That’s impressive, I’m not even mad.”
Smooth Sunday. Talk about an under performer. The debut album for model/actress turned singer songwriter Rosie Vela was produced by Gary Katz, who also produced every Steely Dan record. It also features Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (as well as Rick Derringer, Tony Levin, Larry Fast and Jim Keltner). Both understated and underrated, Zazu slides into your Sunday morning and simmers (there is even a song titled “Sunday”). It is never in your face (despite that gated drum sound that infested the ‘80s) and while Ms. Vela’s range is limited, it is remarkably expressive and the compositions are quite capable. Some of the tunes charted in the UK, but because the album lacks a real hit, the record generally got ignored in the US. But, especially for all you Yacht Rock enthusiasts looking for some relaxing grooves, this one is worth the listen. #djadjectivealbumoftheday#rosievela#magicsmile#donaldfagen#walterbecker#rickderringer#zazu
736/1001: Donald Fagen - The Nightfly.
Formerly of Steely Dan fame, this is Fagen’s debut solo album. It’s jazzier that Steely Dan, very polished and definitely one of those albums that are so perfectly produced sound almost overproduced. It’s very good.
