Documentary film makes sure we don't forget events in our history, awe-inspiring events or atrocities committed against other peoples whose fluctuations have the power to shape, meld or devastate our present socio-topography.
Broken Rainbow follows the forced relocation of the Navajo American-Indians by the US government after already stripping these people of their land and natural mineral rights years before, forcing them to live in abject poverty, desperate to live near ancient grounds and plants, holding their tattered history and beliefs together in open hands. And all of this after they were interned in concentration camps and used as slave labour, having their culture deliberately destroyed, separated from the land. Still no violence or riots.
These gentle people already left with nothing attempt to peaceably campaign in 1985 to stay on their reservation, only to watch government machines come in and violently tear down precious medical plants, desecrating beloved grounds. After watching the Navajo history explained in this program and listening to its quietly spoken people talk about the land, our land, your land; over 15 millennia of guardianship opens up before your eyes, they had always looked after it for you all.
Watching the Navajo and, by extension, their land being ravaged by strip mining, you realise something beyond our understanding has also been forever lost, something we are only really beginning to campaign against under the guise of climate change, and something these indigenous people were already aware of thousands of years before; and something we're being reminded of whether we like it or not.

A bittersweet last day with the children of Mungere School. 📸 by @andycamp11 & @amorisw
Yesterday was our last day filming with the students of the Mungere School and @redsweaterproject. Some of the students guided us on a hike from the school to a nearby waterfall on the escarpment above the Great Rift Valley. This was a great way to end our time with these amazing kids! Thank you @bigashgoals & @redsweaterproject for an amazing experience. ❤️ -Andy C.
