Smoothie Bowl PRE BOULDA SHOULDA DAYYY 😍 .
Honestly I’m not usually one for smoothies since they don’t fill me up but I was craving a thick icecream-y berry something and this was PERFECT to get in some carbs pre-werkkkout 🙌🏼
.
✨140g bluebizzles ✨6g SF/FF Jello mix
✨10g PEScience snickerdoodle (makes anything 1000x more magical)
THATS IT! Blend away I didn’t even use ice 💕 .
Toppings: “Wheaties” since this was my preworkout and not post, I opted for a cereal with zero sugars. I’m NOT saying eating foods high in sugar will kill you!! I just prefer to eat my pop tarts, sugary cereal, etc POST workout when I know it will be utilized most optimally 💪🏾

I pulled the trigger!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have officially signed up for this show. I’ll be competing in the men’s bodybuilding novice division, and potentially the men’s bodybuilding open division as well (TBD).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At the start of this year, I started dieting in order to lose weight following several months of bulking. My starting weight was 190lbs and after five months of very loosely dieting, I was down to 175lbs. That’s when I decided I wanted to do a show. This one lines up perfectly with my schedule, and was far enough away that I had time to prepare properly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This has been a huge learning experience, both mentally and physically. There’s things I did right, and things I could have done differently. I’m happy with where I’m at and look forward to being in Memphis in 3 weeks!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If anyone will be in the Memphis area that weekend, hit me up!

Progress from the first 3 months of #InternYear
I told myself I wouldn’t make excuses just because I’m busy. There are days I miss a meal or a workout because.. life.
But staying consistent the other 99% of the time gets me pretty damn close to my goals. Some ideas may be brewing🤔 #dentistswholift #surgeonswholift #docswholift

One of the most under-rated accessories when you lack consistency in the squat are tempo squats. Again, not a sexy overloaded reverse band squat that looks good for the ‘gram but this WORKS. If you can squat with identical looking reps < 90% then you can ignore this but quite frankly even many elite lifters have a fair bit of variability across submaximal sets. The squat is the most technical of the big 3. Respect it. #docswholift #powerlifting #powerlifter #squat #squats #gains #fitness #garagegym

Errybody wants to just lift heavy weights... well guess what....that ain’t how ya get strong. Submaximal training...working on technique and accumulating volume and experience under the bar are 🔑. Here’s one of many sets of 130kg/286lbs. Sorry for the lack of excitement...not. #powerlifting #homegym #garagegym #squat #squats #bodybuilding #fitness #fitfam #docswholift

Protein bars are not a staple in my diet but a go-to on occasion. They are good for a meal on the go and surprisingly filling! I’m a huge advocate for real food and ‘eating from the land’ wherever possible.
——
We’ve all been there, the Friday afternoon post-lunch lull, where you could demolish a bar of chocolate or a half dozen donuts. You guys all know by now that I have a massive sweet tooth so I only tend to use these to kill a sugar craving.
——
These are the only protein bars I’ve found to date that not only taste amazing but have a decent macro breakdown. The birthday cake flavour is new and by far my favourite but the sprinkles get EVERYWHERE! Other than that, these guys are killing it in the protein bar game in terms of taste!

How do I know this topic is too important to ignore? Because if the same were to happen to African-Americans, or other less represented members of society, it would would still not sit well with me. • Injustice does not have to happen to to you or people like you for you to find it intolerable. •

when i was a third year student, i got into a conversation with another student about salaries. he believed that there was no such thing as a pay gap because “it’s outrageous, there’s just no way the reimbursements work like that”. i tried to explain that yes, it is outrageous, it’s why we are so upset by it. he continued to deny it and then defended his position by saying he has sisters so he’s an advocate for women 🤯
・
more recently, there was a male physician who made statements that his female counterparts make less because they do not work as hard. this was declared NATIONALLY. more of this 🤯🤯
・
the doximity report showed that the gender gap has increased from female physicians earning 26.5% less to now 27.7% less compared to male physicians in 1 year. 🤯🤯🤯!!
・
so you’re telling me that my future prospects as a female surgeon are to get paid less? it’s not about the money, it’s about #equalworkequalpay . shouldn’t our income be based on our qualifications and skills, not our gender? if i choose to wear a dress and heels, does that make me less qualified? does my ability to bear children somehow interfere with the care given? if anything, female physicians can have a positive impact on patient outcomes (JAMA). happy to see there is such widespread coverage on this issue. tagging some accounts who have participated in this discussion.

I was fortunate enough to have the young men’s group from my church come to my backyard gym yesterday for some instruction on how to lift weights. One of the things I enjoyed was trying to explain to them why strength training is important. As a doctor who cares for a mostly older population, I see on an almost daily basis how important strength is to our ability to perform even the most basic of tasks. As a surgeon, I’ve noticed that being stronger makes it easier to position myself and hold my body efficiently in the OR. Some of the other points I tried to make to the young men were:
. Building strength builds confidence. Nailing that last rep on a heavy set of squats you weren’t 100% sure you could do ahead of time teaches you something about how capable you are and gives you courage not to shrink away from things just because they are hard. - getting your back strong makes you less likely to hurt your back. - It’s never too late to start getting stronger. - Training is different from exercise. Training is working towards a longer term goal where each session builds on the achievements from the last session in a progressive fashion and has a measurable outcome. 405 pound squat here we come!
.
Saturday’s squats: 330lbs x5

One overactive muscle, no matter how big or how small, can potentially be the reason you have activation issues elsewhere. Left lat, rhomboid, anterior delt, serratus anterior, and infraspinatus/teres minor barely activating—but pain in the posterior armpit with specific movements, especially pulling movements.

Teres major is “lats helper”, does what lat does but is a not even a tenth of the size. @franklinaribeana’s left teres major had significant tone and was a direct source of pain. Asymmetrical pull on the scap and/or humerus will cause dysfunction in scapulohumeral and scapulothoracic control, commonly leading to pain at the top of the shoulder and wear and tear on the joint/tendons associated. So Dr. G @chrischirofit released teres major today, activated serratus anterior, then went through a BFR program that lit up all the above he was having difficulty connecting to, ensuring he felt all boarders of his scapula being controlled by the appropriate muscles.💪🏽 He’s off to train shoulders and bi’s... pain free. First time low bar squatting, and I’m liking it a lot. This weight 353 lbs (160 kg) feels really easy and I’m excited to see how far I can get with low bar squat. Shoutout to coach @bartellbarbell for encouraging me to switch it up .

Recovery is essential, and most of us are failing to prioritize the most essential parts of it.

All the foam rollers, FMS screens, and corrective exercises won’t replace solid sleep hygiene, nutrition, and understanding recovery well enough to adjust your training accordingly.

#doctorsthatdo Hey, I can say that I am an AMERICA NINJA WARRIOR! .

In February, I received a call from the producers of @nbc American Ninja Warrior to be on the show.  I had competed in an #OCR and placed first.  I had bouldered and rocked climb, but my true passions were yoga, running, and weight lifting with some occasional cycling.  Fortunately, I reached out to @tawneeninja, @fashionatewarrior, ty, and @tachoboy to learn some ninja moves in the weeks leading to the taping in late March. I slowly developed my confidence. By the show night, I was ready. .

Then, I found myself stuck on the second obstacle…for 1-2 minutes.  Yet, I did complete the first part of the obstacle before losing my grip strength. . .

People tend to stay away from the new, the challenging, and the unfamiliar tasks.  Will failing whatever it is lead to death?  Probably not.  Will it set you back? Likely, but there will be another opportunity.  You may have another chance to try it again.  Maybe you need baby steps or a coach to get there.  I will be ready for my next challenge: American Ninja Warrior, Residency, or another athletic competition. . . “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. Short shorts, heavy frame deadlifts, and rack pulls. Taking the handles out a few inches made it a lot harder than expect. Need to get time on the actual @mbpowercenter dead sled prior to nats.
Frame deadlift 615# x 2 super settled with rack pulls. Trying to get #thick.

What were you doing at 5am? I was taking part in the tried and true, weekly wonderment that is #OlySkills and #KettlebellThursday :-)
.
And on top of that, I decided that it's been too easy this far so let's make today a little more challenging!
Let's add more weight!
Let's add more moves!
Let's finish it off with 100 high pulls and snatches fo some stupid reason! 😜
.
Also, pay no attention to that No-Rep. That totally counted.

Coming off a deload and these past three training days have been UNREAL. My joints were starting to feel achy, my recovery was delayed, I was loosing some boost in the gym—so I took it light and only trained 3 hypertrophy days with low loads last week. No cardio. Normal food. Paid off in several ways.. back stronger and so hungry in the gym this week, feeling my leanest at my current weight, joints feel great, hunger and appetite is great. Some of tonight’s leg session to prove it. Also did a few other hammy/glute movements and abs. Feels so good to work.
Ps: who can spot my weaker glute max? Drop it in the comments. 👇🏽You already know I’ve analyzed these a hundred times looking for where I need correction! 🤓 @officialbetterbodies #betterbodieslifestyle #betterbodiesambassador #bodybuildingprofessional #growthmindset #sportsdoc #npcfigure #npccompetitor #figurecompetitor #figureathlete #nycfitfam #nycbodybuilder #sportschiropractor #chiropractor #sportsnutritionist #nutritionist #docswholift #doctorswholift #motivated #humpday #glutes #hammies #glutehamtiein

Another emotionally taxing training session. Back pain, shoulder pain...I wanted to quit multiple times. I managed 3 singles on the squat at 315 then when I tried to set up for bench ended up sending the low back into acute spasm. Did 30 chin ups gritting my teeth and feeling super frustrated. I held it together though and just gotta look forward to my next session, as usual.

What’s better than a practical AND written exam on the same day? Having it two days after another test 🙃 Asking for allll the good vibes to come my way for tomorrow💕
.
But really, though so many of us complain about life how lucky are we? My motto: there is a privilege to pain ✨ does it suck I have to study actually all day? Yes kind offf but I’m stoked to be studying what I love and have the chance to follow my 6 year old DREAM of becoming a doctor 👩‍⚕️ .
So 10PM gym sessions are not ideal, but I’m healthy enough to be able to move and train my body! So congrats my friends on already making it half way through the week...and what better way to end than on LEGGG DAYYY!

I LOVE DESSERT. ALL TYPES.
.
It’s been that way probably since birth 😂
.
And guess what? I EAT DESSERT.
.
Yep, I go ahead and treat myself to delicious macarons.
.
Because life is too short to not enjoy delicious foods that we enjoy!
.
The key is moderation and making sure it’s a dessert you love and a true treat, not just a convenient sugar rush.
.
Treat yourself to something of quality for goodness sakes, not some nasty honey bun out of the vending machine!
.
Then you will actually feel satisfied with your treat and be able to eat your treats in moderation.
.
So yes, my motto and fitness mentality includes dessert, just please make it good and worth your treat❤️

When you get let outta clinic early but know you’ll procrastinate like a boss if you go home -> coffee shop it is! Reading about all the GYN Cancers this week in preparation for my GYN onc month starting Oct 1.
While we may not have good screening for ovarian cancer we sure do for other GYN cancers including PAP smears for cervical cancer, EMBs for abnormal bleeding for endometrial cancer, and the good old history and physical exam for vaginal and vulvar cancer.
Just because you don’t need a PAP annually anymore doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still visit your GYN every year (we miss you!). Speaking of, I’m the worst at keeping up with annual exams but as a resolution this year have just booked my PCP, dental, and eye doc exams for the coming weeks.
Preventative medicine is the best medicine after all.
Ok, enough procrastination (I always find a way) time to read about LYNCH syndrome || #ChooseYou

Since starting this page I’ve had a tonne of questions on one topic in particular...my diet. What is the best diet to build muscle? What is the best diet to lose fat? Which diet do you follow?
——
Well, It depends on your goal. That’s what I tell everybody. I tell that to my patients; I tell that to people asking for gym/training advice; I even have to sometimes tell that to myself.
——
The ‘diet’ I follow is Flexible Dieting. That means I eat everything. No food/food group is off limits. Over the last few weeks I have consistently been losing fat following this ‘diet’.
——
Immediately post-op, the heaviest I weighed was 89kg. Sure a lot of it was retained water but the rest sure as hell was not pure muscle! I’m now down to 78kg! My muscle mass has remained the same and my strength has gone up!
——
Whilst on this ‘diet’ I have eaten pizza, burgers, chocolate, ice cream, donuts, cake and have even drunk the occasional beer or glass of wine. My point is you do not need to give up the things you enjoy.
——
The only thing I have modulated and stuck to is a calorie deficit. What the evidence has consistently shown us is this is the most consistent method of achieving weight loss. The trick is to minimise lean muscle loss along with it. You do that by keeping a positive nitrogen balance (eat protein) and incorporate enough resistance training. I also find carbs to be muscle sparing ie by keeping it in my diet fat loss is preferred over muscle loss in a calorie deficit.
——
Things like Keto has worked extremely well for some people and I do think there is some merit in modulating carb intake depending on your overall lean tissue mass (in that the more muscular you are, the more carbs you need and vice versa) but I do not think cutting carbs out altogether is beneficial in getting a lean, muscular physique.

Instagram can be so unrealistic😣

As this block comes to an end again... here I am in my natural habitat.
- no makeup
- brows that need threading
- unwashed/badly in need of a haircut hair
- 2nd coffee by 8am
- happy

I’ve learned a lot this cardiology❤️ month. I used to dread cardio because it was a big unknown - but like anything, exposure and learning can be a steep however rewarding curve. I’ve seen some superrrrr sick kids, some of which didn’t make it this past month. But have reminded me of ho fragile life is and how grateful we should be for continued health

Did you know that the back squat is a compound, full body functional exercise that mirrors a fundamental movement we all do in our daily lives? It dynamically targets muscles of the buttocks, hips, thighs and hamstrings while isometrically targeting the lower back, upper back, abdominals, trunk muscles, shoulders and arms. It is in this manner such an effective developer of core strength.

💥 EXTENSION DIRECTIONAL PREFERENCE 💥

If your lower back/leg pain is worse with sitting and better with standing/walking, there's a good chance you could have an extension directional preference
• • •
This type of back pain is commonly found in people who have sedentary jobs in which they sit most of the day...aka the majority of the adult population 😮
• • •
The next few videos show extension based exercises that I would prescribe if I found an extension directional preference in my patient
1🔷️ Prone on elbows
2🔷️ Press up
3🔷️ Extension in standing
• • •
I typically reccomend my patients to perform 10 reps of a given extension based exercise frequently throughout the day, up to 10 reps evey hour. If you find these exercises either help to decrease your pain or centralize it out of your leg and up to your back, keep doing them 👍. However, if they exacerbate your pain, or make the pain spread further down your leg, stop ❌
• • •
Tag ✋ someone who sits all day and needs to show their low back a little love

P.S. Don't suggest doing press ups in blinding sunlight 😎. And these exercises are more effective if you perform them in lifters...it's science 👨‍🔬 If you have any questions about directional preferences or these exercises, or are currently dealing with back pain and want to set up an evaluation with me, contact me here or at DrRyan@proletept.com

259# is not the 5RM I planned to hit today, but I will take it. Feeling like there is a lot more in the tank, especially since I accidentally push pressed the 3rd rep. Will shoot for 285 for the @officialstrongman_ online qualifier for 105kg worlds.

Posing in the bathroom, who me?
😃😄😊😋🤗🍎☕
Today was heavy deadlifts, reps upon reps of leg press, bench and 1 arm rows. There were other accessories too but I think I blacked all that out.
Progress is progress, there is no plateau here📈📈📈

Airport workout going from MIA 👉 LAX. I have a million lower extremity problems/injuries so quad/glute/arch strength is a forever struggle 🤦‍♀️
.
But there are zero excuses to not keep working on it. The 5 hour flight was free of aches and pains because I spent the wait to board MOVING 🙏
.
Then we got tacos and went bouldering @laboulders 🧗‍♀️
.
Movement is what grants you the freedom to play ✨

This photo of me was taken at my welcome to residency reception just before starting intern year. When I look at it I see youth, I see hope, I see fear, I see excitement.
This week we’re honoring physician suicide awareness and starting a conversation about how to prevent it.
It’s no secret that physicians are at an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm and thus it’s no surprise that we’re also at an increased risk for suicide.
If we’re being honest we’ve all felt the pressure to succeed, been beyond exhausted after a tough call, and have left the hospital with every intent of never coming back.
I still remember distinctly a time my intern year when I was questioning a patient who came in for a crisis visit. She said she felt utterly exhausted, had no desire to perform her daily activities, and desperately needed someone to talk to to help her through it. As I heard her talk I felt like I was listening to a version of myself speak the very same words. I had been on night float for medicine seeing patient after patient, doing chart after chart, isolated from my loved ones, answering phone call after phone call and feeling so burnt out then switched rapidly to ER where my shifts were front loaded for a pending vacation. I worked every weekend leading up to that week off with my significant other. And the week came and went and while it refueled me and left me feeling more like myself than I had in months I still came back to the same environment and was forced to keep going.
I’m happy to say I did keep going even though at the time I know I wanted to quit. I’m happy now. I spend time exercising and watching TV and interacting with my loved ones on a daily basis. I know I could be a better resident and study more and work longer hours and volunteer to stay for that extra case. But those behaviors are all ones that trigger me to burn out faster and I know if I do that I’ll never make it. My life is more valuable to me than my desire to succeed. (Cont in comments) ...

This is why I love my career! There's nothing better than hearing from patients that they're feeling better and can finally get back to doing the things that they love to do
• • •
If you're an athlete or active individual, you need a healthcare provider that knows the demands of your lifestyle/sport. What you don't need is someone who is going to tell you "just stop squatting/running/lifting" etc
• • •
There are always things you can manipulate, such as performing exercise regressions, modifications, and changing loading variables, to keep your patients training and doing what they love while rehabbing an injury
• • •
If you need a physical therapist who will take the time to listen to you, find ways to keep you training, and develop a plan unique to you in order to get you pain free, message me here or email me at DrRyan@proletept.com

Even doctors need a little #selfcare now and then. Such a cool (pun) experience at @mainecryospa trying out the Whole Body Cryotherapy. I woke up with a really sore neck and aches everywhere (normal with strength training) and this made them feel much better even right after having it done. Not to mention the endorphin rush of being in a -230F chamber for 3 minutes 😂 Definitely will be back and make it a part of my recovery regimen. #recovery #powerlifting #sportsdoc #powerdoc #docswholift #cryotherapy

the trick to a fat back is to keep your pager on for added weight. 📟😉

challenging myself to do 2 pull-ups per page that I get on my long call days because gym time is limited this month. -

First time back to the gym after stopping in May because of a hernia. I had surgery 6 weeks ago, but I’ve been trying to take it easy so that my abs have time to heal.

I specifically cut all my weights in half, just so I could go through the motions. Felt really good to be back.

💥 FLEXION DIRECTIONAL PREFERENCE 💥

If your lower back/leg pain is worse with standing/walking 🚶‍♂️ and better with sitting , there's a good chance you could have a flexion directional preference
• • •
People that I commonly find have this directional preference are gymnasts and weightlifters 🏋️‍♂️ (due to the frequent overhead activity and positioning of the lumbar spine in extension), pregnant and recently postpartum women 👶 (the position of the baby changes their center of mass which pulls their lumbar spine into prolonged periods of extension during pregnancy), and the elderly 👴 (due to the normal age related changes to the spine)
• • •
The next few videos show flexion based exercises that I would prescribe if I found a flexion directional preference in my patient
1🔷️ Single knee to chest
2🔷️ Quadruped camel stretch
3🔷️ Seated lumbar flexion
4🔷️ Standing lumbar flexion
• • •
I typically reccomend my patients to perform 10 reps of a given flexion based exercise frequently throughout the day, up to 10 reps evey hour. If you find these exercises either help to decrease your pain or centralize it out of your leg and up to your back, keep doing them 👍. However, if they exacerbate your pain, or make the pain spread further down your leg, stop ❌
• • •
If you like the info, share it ➡️. If you know somebody dealing with back pain, tag em ✋

If you have any questions about directional preferences or these exercises, or are currently dealing with back pain and want to set up an evaluation with me, contact me here or at DrRyan@proletept.com

BFR is extremely valuable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, it’s not a miracle modality. We can’t use it in isolation with our patients.

@thehumanperformancemechanic of @thebfrpros comes on the show to talk about the 4 pillars of BFR, it’s value, and how he incorporates it into practice.
