It’s the beginning of a new Disney era. If you have a hard time sitting through the original Fantasia, then you’ll most likely have a hard time sitting through this as well, even though it’s shorter. The film’s way of paying homage to the original has some nice animation, but at times the movie feels unoriginal and there’s nothing new about it. Some of the segments are pretty to watch such as the whales' segment, Rhapsody in Blue, and the Firebird suite. The animation is done so beautifully that it shows Disney is great when it comes to animation as it usually is. Though, there are segments where the music doesn’t seem to fit what’s happening such as the Donald Duck segment and the beginning. The celebrity cameos could have been cool to see if they didn’t try to make it silly. Just take it seriously, it’s okay to not appeal to the kids. They’re usually trying to congratulate the movie or make unfunny jokes. There’s nothing that’s really bad about this movie, besides the celebrity cameos, it’s just that this movie has a lot of hits and misses. Really, just check out some of these segments on YouTube, the entire thing isn’t worth sitting through. If they ever do one again, I hope it’s just a bit better than this, cause I’m interested to see what music and new animation they could bring today.

Almighty Voivod. The Canadian legends have been around for 36 years and unlike many of their peers, refuse to make a mediocre record. 'The Wake' is their fourteenth studio album and the first to feature Rocky Laroche, the new bass player. Continuing with the sound established on 'Target Earth', Voivod showed everyone how to make a record that stays true to their sound but bravely ventures into new waters.

A considerable part of this success is the addition of Chewy Mongrain who is the only guitarist on the planet that could fill the void which Piggy left after his tragic death. Not only did he achieve such a feat but he added new energy and perspective to a band that was already focused and strong. As is to be expected, 'The Wake' has Voivod's iconic weirdness and sci-fi theme wrapped around progressive thrash chaos but the emphasis on the progressive is what truly sets this record apart from their previous work.

As soon as "Obsolete Beings" start you are met with Chewy's monstrous riffs, Away's very punky yet proggy drumming and Snake's legendary odd vocals. This is what Voivod is all about and I'll be honest, it took me a while to get used to Snake's voice. He isn't the best vocalist when it comes to technique but his presence and lyrics are irreplaceable. Snake truly shines here as this could be his most diverse performance yet. Be it raspy shouting on "The End Of Dormancy" or gentle croons on "Always Moving", his charisma oozes throughout the record.

I also greatly appreciate the addition of strings that enrichen the longer, more epic tracks. I am also impressed with the variety this record holds and a lot of what you hear appears one last time on the epic, medley-like finale of "Sonic Mycelium". If the previous songs were wack then this would be a total failure, luckily this absolutely rips and has so many excellent twists. Voivod somehow managed to create one of 2018's finest records this late into their career. Confidence, energy and creativity is practically bursting from them and while it's not for everyone, I highly suggest you give this a shot. Few bands are influential and consistent as these guys. Crazy and scary, this is an astounding record.

Every genre has its ground-breaking records and extreme metal is no different. Bathory's debut, Venom's 'Black Metal', Gorguts' 'Obscura', At The Gates' 'Slaughter Of The Soul' and others come to mind but we might have a new one to join their ranks.

Record in question is Imperial Triumphant's latest beautiful abomination called 'Vile Luxury'. The band hails from New York and their goal with this record was to show the disgusting underbelly of a metropolis going through decadence but despite all of this, bathes in splendour and extravagance. This is the soundtrack of "Big Apple's" rotten core. How does this soundtrack sound you might wonder. Imagine if Gorguts and DSO violently clashed with Miled Davis, Don Cherry and Sosthakovich. Trombones, trumpets, tubas set the record off on "Swarming Opulence" before we fall into the deepest crevasse filled with nightmarish screams, mind-bending riffs and out of this world drumming.

Despite its density, 'Vile Luxury' sounds astonishing and it's due Colin Marston's pristine mix and master. Each time I see his name I get a big smile on my face, he simply does no wrong. Each calm jazz section, like that in 'Cosmopolis' or 'Chernobyl Blues' sounds perfect. The record is so dynamic and I was never quite certain what awaits behind the corner. I was staggered by Steve's (bassist) amazing free-jazz piano solo and I refuse to tell you where it's located. The record also has guests such as Will of Artificial Brain and Yoshiko of Bloody Panda so expect even more surprises.

If I could use just two words to describe 'Vile Luxury' I would choose "regal savagery". Every seemingly random note has weight behind it and all of them together paint a grim yet gorgeous picture of a city that is dying from the inside. Every major city has this issue (Voices' 'London' anyone?) but none have Imperial Triumphant.

With eight songs that span over 56 minutes, 'Vile Luxury' is far from a easy listen but it has so much going for it that time flies by you. I am 100% confident this is the newest landmark in extreme metal and music in general. A must listen. I wonder if the band tops this, if they succeed, it will be game changing.
