For me, cooking used to be about how technical my dishes could get. I would consider French and Italian foods to be the most prestigious and worthwhile to learn. Now, cooking for me is a way to reconnect with my culture, to transport me back to my childhood days, and to remind me of family on days when I’m just a little homesick. Not only can Chinese dishes be difficult from a technical perspective, but actual recipes for many comfort foods like this #charsiu are hard to find. Even if you find them, they’re often written in Chinese, and as many of my fellow first-generation Chinese friends and family can probably relate, it’s hard to maintain a language that you don’t use and practice on a regular basis. And so while this dish wasn’t perfect, it felt good making something that had me intimidated for so long, but also holds so many fond memories of growing up and my family. Now that I’ve got a hang of it, the question is - what should I make next?
So the other day @jeremiahswoodworks and I were texting. He sent me a picture of a gourmet pie that he baked. We got on the subject of burgers....blah blah blah...........
Today I found myself at @fiveguys getting a burger and fries. I texted Jeremiah blaming him for my visit to 5 guys. He wanted me to take a picture of my burger to make him famous.
SO ! Since my brother from another Mother asked for a picture........
Here we are. You looking at a picture of my dinner and me trying to make Jeremiah famous.
The things we do for friends. 😂🤗😁
Dinner is served! Garlic collard greens, @annieshomegrown Mac & Cheese, fried barbecue chicken drumsticks fried in the @gowiseusa Air Fryer with a side of homegrown and homemade kale chips, because why not. Paired with a strawberry, (homegrown) mojito mint and lemon infused water. I can't tell you enough how much I love the air fryer. No batter was used and no oil was used yet the chicken is so crispy, crunchy and perfectly cooked. I literally placed the chicken in the fryer basket, let it cook and then tossed it in barbecue sauce. I didn't even have to wait for the air fryer to preheat! Winning. If you'd like the recipe for the collards, let me know in the comments below. Salud, everyone!
