Lont time no lens for my Nikon! It was really ages since I last bought my last piece for my queen of darkness. But was love at first sight, when I tried out Nikon 50mm f1.2 a couple of weeks ago in Kamakura. I decided I needed one. I have a special relation with Nikon: I can say I hate their cameras, but they so much fit me that when I handle them they becomes an of extension of myself. Instead of a standard 50mm, this time I opted for the older Nikkor 55mm f1.2... a non-AI version, modified to AI, the intention being that of getting the optically better 50mm later on. It is in a relatively good condition (just a little haze/discoloration of the front element’s coating in one point with no effect on the image… the a-hole that sold it to me did not mention it…I noticed it later). I did not have the chance to firing it properly yet. But I know it is just a little bit less sharp than the 50mm (an hairline less sharp…) and it has more halo/softness and ghosting boke effects (which is exactly why I preferred it). Back in the in the 1950's and 1960's ‘slow’ films made photographers ask for faster lenses. Coating and the introduction of computers made lens design a bit easier and Nikon, keeping up the bar against competitors, managed to produce a fast Nikkor-N 50mm f1.1 for its range finder camera. For the SLR camera, however, it was too difficult, because the rear element was in the way of the mirror. That's why they went for a longer focal length and a slightly slower f1.2. The lens was introduced in 1965. Nikon replaced it later with the 50mm f/1.2 AI-s version in 1978 and later developments.
