The picture depicts a Native American Boarding School. Before 1978 (ICWA) Native kids could be taken from their homes and put in government run boarding schools against parental consent. The theme of the boarding school era was "Kill the Indian, Save the Man". The first steps they would take towards this goal were to cut off our hair . And to disallow the use of tribal language. This was enforced with violence. Some Natives were sold to White families, some integrated into White or Urban culture, and some went home. Of those who went home many of our relatives had too much trauma to speak their language to their children And so many Native people speak English , as our elders were forced to. Acts of cultural genocide.

This is an image commonly shown to North American Indian children to help them visualize colonization. At one time in history the colonizers would ride trains on railroads and put their guns out the window, following entire herds, and decimate the entire herd at a time. They did not collect from the buffalo, it was simply about killing our food source. They were nearly hunted to distinction. They are now off the endangered species list but for buffalo generations to remain healthy they have to roam. They can't be farmed, they need space. With the selling off of natural parks to capitalize from natural resources there may be a threat soon as there will not be enough area for buffalo populations to remain healthy. Buffalo are now a managed species and not a natural part of our environment and life as they used to be and for many Natives our connection to them in lived experience is rare. An act of cultural genocide.

Today is the first day of the Calgary Stampede and it’s important to recognize that it was once illegal for Indigenous peoples to wear their traditional regalia or practice ceremony in public- furthermore, Indigenous peoples were excluded and barred from the Calgary Stampede parade and other festivities. A piece of literature that we’ve incorporated into our work is 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act by Bob Joseph. The Indian Act of 1876 “forbade western Indians from appearing in any public dance, show, exhibition, stampede, or pageant wearing traditional regalia (1906-1951).” The Indian Act, and the Department of Indian Affairs controlled nearly every aspect of Indigenous peoples lives. Stampede founder Guy Weadick lobbied federal officials to get First Nations in the first parade, he succeeded and 1,800 First Nations people made their way to the first Calgary Stampede in 1912. This only lasted two years, as a law was passed making it illegal any Indigenous person to take part in a cultural ceremony off reserve. It took decades before the rules finally changed.

Opening July 6th, 2018.
As an #Indigenous person to this continent, originating from what is currently #Montana, I know exactly who I am and where I stand in life. But I feel in recent times, there have been variable definitions of the term “American”. Especially when thinking about what it means to be a #personofcolor, in the #UnitedStatesOfAmerica, all histories considered.
Naturally, these thoughts don’t originate from inside my head, but rather these pressures come from our society, #media, #govt and so on. So many influences & alterations have me asking what a #realamerican really is. Is an #american one who takes and accumulates culture and material?
If the definition of an American is based on history and recent times, then an American must be discriminative, capitalist, racist, culture mongering, ethnic cleansing, patriotic, hard-working, gluttonous, restrictive, Christian, enslaving, xenophobic, homophobic, sexist, patriarchal, misogynistic, ignorant, deprecating, deploring and so many more. I’m not so dense to say there isn’t beauty or #freedom in #america, just not as much for those underrepresented people of color, and if you don’t agree open your eyes to another reality.

I would acknowledge that this Toronto DJ is situated upon traditional territories of the Wendat, Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations and the Métis Nation; and it is with utmost respect and gratitude when I do get to I perform in this beautiful country.
Please educate yourself on indigenous histories and how North American governments have lied and cheated in order to rule the land. Acknowledgement before celebration. #CulturalGenocide #CanadaDay

On this Canada Day, I would like to acknowledge the history of New Westminster’s indigenous people. The Qayqayt First Nation, part of the Coast Salish people, is one of the smallest First Nations in Canada. It is also the only one registered without a land base in BC.
Originally the Qayqayt were a band of 400 strong, until smallpox wiped out 3/4 of their people. Between residential schools and further cultural genocide the Qayqayt all but ceased to exist. It was as if they had vanished, quite literally, from the map.
Two decades ago Rhonda Larrabee spearheaded the rebuilding of the band and culture of the Qayqayt saying, “Everything I have done, I have done because of and for my mom. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the generations after should know where they came from.” Recognizing the history of the land I now call home is a crucial part of moving forward with #truthandreconciliation . Acknowledging the cultural genocide we have benefitted from goes a long way in fighting for #indegenousrights . First Nations history is Canadian history and pretending otherwise is ignorance at best.
Happy Canada Day friends. 🇨🇦

Despite my recent obsession with the New York School poets/painters, I'm a Canadian. For today's celebrations I kept trying to blackout the Molson Canadian guy's rant, but then I did this to the national anthem instead. The image I've used here is a photograph of a mural underneath the Granville Street bridge in Vancouver, Corey Bulpitt and Larissa Healey's "The Storm" (2011). The original text is obviously “O Canada”, the English & bilingual versions.

I only came into my culture last March, didn't know much about my peoples history, let alone anything else. The last year has been an overwhelming learning experience, and today I understand why my fellow brothers and sisters do not celebrate Canada Day, and today I choose not to either. I would love nothing more than to spend the day in ceremony and reflection thinking about my Ancestors who came before me, and how I can better educate others about where I come from and the damage colonization does, but girls gotta work 😕 (this pic is just a tiny fraction of what colonization did and still does) I will remain #strongresilientindigenous 👊🏼 #turtleisland #creenation #decolonize #canadasdarkhistory #culturalgenocide #culturalgenocidecontinues #sevensacredlaws #firstcitizens #strongindigenouswoman #cultureisfreedom #vancouverite #cree #creewoman #firstnations #canada #standstrong #thankyoucreator #motherearth #ancestors #coastsalish #musqueam #tsleilwaututh #huychqu #osiem #sixtiesscoop #60sscoop #survivor #nativeamerican #decolonizenowcelebratelater

"We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal.

We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members." ---Margaret Sanger, Founder of Planned Parenthood

I learned I was a #60sScoopSurvivor only 1 year ago. I was taken away from my family, culture, traditional teachings, and #cree language at birth and was raised by a non-aboriginal, Christian family. I was taught my culture was evil and my people are less than, so I lived in anger hating everything Aboriginal wanting nothing to do with it. Now estranged from the people who adopted me to be their slave and punching bag, I am now on a journey bringing myself back home to what was missing in my life: my culture and teachings. Because of that, I am who I'm supposed to be today: a #strongresilientindigenous #creewoman who is proud of where I come from. The #canadiangovernment tried to take the #indian out of me by #assimilation. I stand tall today to tell the world they FAILED! ⚡️TRIGGER WARNING⚡️
Based on Pratt’s “kill the Indian in him and save the man” philosophy, the Carlisle school became a national model.

More than 400 day and boarding schools were built near reservations, most run by religious organizations, while at least 25 off-reservation boarding schools were established between 1880 and 1902. Some 100,000 Native Americans were forced to attend these schools.
By 1930s most off-reservation boarding schools were closed.

Absolutely heart wrenching but brilliant movie. Canada’s dark history, the survival of one indigenous man and a small glimpse in understanding why so many of us are still feeling the affects today. Curious to know why indigenous peoples live with scars, pain in their hearts, cling to substance abuse or don’t seem to function in today’s society? Watch this movie.

We should never turn a blind eye. What we did, what we’re still doing is completely unacceptable. How did we manage to convince ourselves and others that we have such high morals when we built this country on the backs of those who were here before us? How can we continue to ignore and refuse? #sevenfallenfeathers #readingchallenge #indigenous #culturalgenocide #theywereherefirst
World's biggest library 🔥On may 31st 1981 TULF held a rally in which three Srilankan police were shot by unknown. Following this incident the whole riots were carried out by Srilankan police accompanied by brutal sinhala mobs.
.
🔥On the night of June 1, 1981 the public library of Jaffna was burnt down by the organized sinhala mobs that accompanied by Srilankan police. During the time UNP (united national party) was ruling the island.
.
🔥The library was built in many stages starting from 1933, from a modest beginning as a private collection. Soon, with the help of primarily local citizens, it became a full-fledged library.
.
🔥By the time it was built the library was the biggest library in whole asia containing 97,000 books, ancient palm leaves manuscripts and archives.
.
🔥The planned burning was one of many reason to trigger the #Tamils to fight for their #freedom. 🔥On this day, not only the Library but also the monuments, #hindu temples, and houses were burnt down and destroyed. The rioters were well organized and Srilankan police were guiding them.
.
🔥 Till the date nobody has been punished for this #culturalgenocide. 🔥By burning the #Jaffna library where tamils heritage and long rich history were stored , burnt into ashes. The rare books and manuscripts about tamil heritage doesn't exist anymore. .
But it is stored in Every tamil's DNA. Nobody can't erase it. We'll get back #தமிழீழம். #ௐ

It’s pretty heartbreaking that the locals gotta pay the price for PGV’s greed. They claim clean renewable energy while our electric bills steadily rise, makes you wonder if it was true or just another marketing ploy to charge the residents of Hawaii exorbitant fees for electricity which are also in fact one of the highest in the nation. #notmynation #nationbytheft #culturalgenocide #morealohaaina #lessbombingandfracking #farmersmarkethawaii #brokenhardened

520 years ago, on 20th May 1498, the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed in Calicut due to his discovery of the new maritime route to India. This started off a chain of events that ultimately led to one of the darkest ages of Indian history - The Colonial Period. As opposed to popular notions, the colonisation of South Asia was a slow process spanning many centuries. How did Europeans who came originally as traders manage to subjugate and ultimately rule a region which at their time of arrival was much more industrialised and populous than Europe? How did they overcome the rich and well entrenched local rulers with just a handful of soldiers? Was this process only achieved via military means or was there a cultural component as well?
.
.
In the coming few weeks, I will try to bring to light the answers to each of these questions and much more in my posts. ————————-

Asbestos exposure is a consequence of colonialism that’s still affecting two of the indigenous communities I’ve worked and lived with.
This is Bwebwenemena Taam.
She’s cooking over an open fire in her home, an abandoned facility used by the British Phosphate Commission, who strip-mined Banaba from 1901-1979. They left behind housing that’s filled with asbestos sheeting and failed to inform the Banabans that this was toxic.
I wrote this story two years ago and have been trying to get the governments responsible to do something, but still, nothing has happened.
I’ve recently been covering stories affecting the indigenous communities in British Columbia, and while doing my research discovered that many of the houses built on reserves were made using Zonolite, an asbestos insulation. People are still dying of mesothelioma in indigenous communities, after being displaced from their homes and placed in houses they didn’t choose to live in to begin with.
You can read about the Banabans here: https://blog.nationalgeographic.org/2016/04/08/living-on-a-tropical-island-and-an-asbestos-wasteland/ .
