Cheque Oitedie Cooperative’s mission is to strengthen the Ayoreo women’s cultural identity through the promotion of traditional weaving. For hundreds of years, Ayoreo women have passed weaving techniques and designs to their daughters, starting in childhood and developing their skills as they grow up. The artists harvest the plants and then sit to weave together, using that time to also discuss important issues and make decisions for their community. Since the relocation of the Ayoreo people in the 1970s, weaving has become a way to connect future generations to the past and help the Ayoreo sustain their identity in times of great change.

The Mestre Sala and Porto Bandeira (flag bearers) role is one of the most important components of an escola de samba (samba school). According to senior sambistas (samba artists) the appearance of the flag bearers first appeared in the senzalas (slave camps) of colonial Brazil. In those times high society regularly held large soirées in the grand ballrooms of the houses owned by slave masters. After the ball had ended and the table cloths were being washed, among the slaves there was always one who would take a cloth and attach it to the end of a broom handle making the appearance of a flag. With the other cloths they would create a voluminous skirt. In the same way they saw their grand house owners greeting their guests with a bow, the flag bearer would imitate and do the same in the the senzalas for amusement. In the beginning of the 20th century when escola de sambas were beginning to form, the Mestre Sala and Porto Bandeira were appointed “protectors” of the flag as it became the symbol of the school, something to be worshipped and guarded. Often at large parties, rival samba schools would attempt to steal the opposing schools flag which would lead to humiliation, hence the need to appoint someone to protect it. The couples dance is a ritual, based on the art of conquest. His mission is to woo his partner as well as protect and proudly display the schools flag, she must lead and present the flag, always flaunting it in graceful gestures without curling it in her own body. Also known as Chichibu Yomatsuri, the Chichibu Night Festival is the festival of the Chichibu Shrine in Chichibu. It’s just over 150 km away from central Tokyo and is considered as one of Japan’s top three festivals to feature both majestic floats and fireworks.
Taking place annually on the 3rd of December, the Chichibu Night Festival is an astonishing matsuri, with its climax taking place in the evening when kasaboko and yatai floats, weighing 10-20 tons each and lit up with countless lanterns, climbing up a steep slope with a mikoshi (portable shrine).
