Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by my studio this weekend, or came to the @south_east_makers_club in Deptford. It was an amazing weekend, and I was trusty blown away. It was lovely to meet so many customers face to face, chat about my work and my studio and see work go off to loving homes. It’s actually taken me a full two days to recuperate, but I’ll be at Hackney @diyartmarket this Sunday with my remaining (limited) stock.
57 日 - Monk Ikkyu (part I)
Once upon a time, a very beautiful and elegant courtesan lived in the pleasure quarters of old Japan. She was the daughter of a samurai, who was kidnapped by his enemies and was sold to a brothel. She renamed herself as “Jigoku” (hell) because she believed that her misfortune was the result of karma from her previous life. She served as a courtesan to Zen monk Ikkyu and studied Buddhism to free herself from her tragic destiny. In this print, she wears an uchikake (outer-kimono) made of all the souls of hell being tortured by demons, the weight of which was a constant reminder to the courtesan of her wretched fate. She is strolling at New Year's with her two small attendants, a servant holding an umbrella over her head. .
