This is the minimum concentration of anaesthetic inhalation agent required in the alveoli to cause unconsciousness and prevent movement response to noxious stimuli in 50% of patients.
To maintain patients at a surgical plane of anaesthesia (Stage 3) it is advised that the MAC should be multiplied by 1.5.
However, if your patient has a good #MultiModalAnalgesic approach in regards to premedication on board anaesthesia should be easily maintained very closely around their MAC.
With anaesthesia all side effects are ‘dose dependent’ so we should be aiming to use as little anaesthetic inhalation agent as possible.
The function of general anaesthesia inhalation agents such as Isoflurane or Sevoflurane are to cause unconsciousness and stop the conscious perception of pain – they provide NO analgesia!
If you’re having to use your inhalation agents wayyyyyy above the MAC then it might be time to chat to your vet and review your analgesic techniques.
In my personal opinion you shouldn’t have to use your Iso above 2% in dogs & cats if your premed and analgesic techniques are 👍.
I find once your vaporiser dial goes above 2% their BP drops significantly. #NoThanks
If you are satisfied with their anaesthetic depth yet you are seeing tachypnoea / tachycardia and/or hypertension and it seems to be in response to noxious stimuli then they may need MORE analgesia, not a deeper level of anaesthesia. #SpeakToYourVet
Remember all analgesics and sedatives are MAC sparing (which is one of the reasons we premedicate!) > which enables a lower volatile agent % > which means less dose dependent side effects = which benefits your patient😁

#ProudToBeANerd 👩🏻⚕️I don't know about you, but at school I was always worried about coming across as a nerd...... 🤓Well, as an adult I really couldn't care less.... EMBRACE IT!
I thoroughly enjoy going on courses, listening to podcasts, reading txt books, learning and undertaking certificates🙂
WHY? Because it makes me so much better at my job!
As a registered veterinary nurse in the UK it is compulsory to undertake CPD - This is a wonderful way or reason😉 to focus your studies in your areas of interest.... What do YOU love?
Is it behaviour🧐? Is the feline nursing🤨? Is it surgical emergencies🤨? Is it anaesthesia😍? What ever floats your boat embrace your 'inner geek' and learn, learn, LEARN🤩
Learning benefits you, your patients.... and also your team if you SHARE your knowledge.
For me if I don't share and keep talking about what I have learn't I often forget things... which is why I encourage ALL nurses to share their knowledge and tips..... After all we should all be working in proactive learning environment!
