Chronic Pain and the holidays don’t seem to mix so well. Having the most painful disease in the world is no joke - and I think when it got coined THAT disease, they meant it in both ways - physically and emotionally. One thing we suffer from is not being able to leave our homes, and it’s so hard to keep friendships when we are in pain, and at home all the time. .
.

A lot of mixed feelings seem to pop up out of nowhere this time of year - feelings of abandonment, betrayal, and heartache. While everyone else is enjoying Christmas movies, & sipping their hot cocoa, you just wish it would get hot again because the cold weather is making your limbs ache, and the festive holiday is breaking your heart. .
.

Having a support system that stands by you, stands up for you, and believes in you is critical. Seek out people that will be with you through thick or thin, take time out of their busy schedules to stop in and say hello, and no matter what, check in on you. .
.

How do you fix this problem? You could always move to the sunny states, like Arizona or Florida!…. but, how do you fix the broken heart? You can’t just move away…or can you? .
.

Maybe moving away and having a fresh start isn’t such a bad idea! Getting away and starting new could help clear the ghosts of Christmas Past, but you will still need some help. .
.

And, you still need support - you still need friends. Not the online ones (as awesome as they are ;)) but the kind that you can lean on & get a hug from every once in a while. You need to seek out support from others local to you from churches or social clubs. Try to make the effort to get out of the house. It's not THAT scary. .

For patients that are on Schedule I or Schedule II drugs (Fentanyl, Norco, Percocet, Codeine) most likely they are being treated by a Pain Management Specialist (someone who is generally trained in anesthesiology, pain management, or neurology and works with patients who suffer from chronic pain). .
.

Pain Contracts state that a patient will only get narcotics from one doctor (or group), only get narcotic from one source, will not sell or share the narcotics, will not refill too early, will take random drug screenings

Learn more about pain contracts: https://complextruths.org/resources/contract/
.
.

This Pain Contract are put into a Statewide Database, and the feds look for doctor shopping, pain med shopping at emergency rooms, and early refills. Over 35 states now share in this database at a federal level, including Canada, to help track opioid use, and a doctor can look a patient up and see what narcotic they are on before ever treating them.
.
.

Doctors use Pain Contract as protection from the DEA, in the event that the DEA reviews their records for over-prescribing, to ensure that doctors physically sees their patient every time the prescription is refilled, to ensure the doctors is evaluating the patient for over (or mis) use of the medication, and evaluating the patient for safety reasons.
.
.

The reason the Pain Contract protects the patient is because:
* Doctor feels “safer” prescribing medication * Emergency personnel can access the database * Working with one doctor allows them new ways to help manage your pain.
* Doctors can access patients entire medical history which may help new diagnoses (i.e., CRPS diagnosis)

When you have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, CRPS, especially on the lower limbs, pulling on a pair of compression stockings, especially if you have severe allodynia can be equivalent to sticking your leg in a molten lava and watching it melt. .
.

But, it isn’t reasonable to have your legs extended in certain situations, like an airplane (as first class isn’t always an option) or car (unless you lay across the backseats). But, you can’t let the surface tissue fill with blood and fluids either, because that will just cause pain and flare-ups. .
.

In enter knee high stockings. These are light enough to where you can stretch them out versus pulling them up your leg, and they are ALMOST unnoticeable as you wear them throughout the day (whether you are walking or sitting). I noticed a huge difference! You can wear them under socks too, and with ballet flats so you can avoid blisters, it was almost like the old days, not quite, but almost. .

We continue to focus our week on our Caretakers but sometimes it Caretakers need help too!
.
.

My family have gone as far as to ask a neighbor to drive to PT or pick up a child from school. .
.

Sometimes you just can’t do it by yourself and that is ok. Do what you have to do and don't be shy asking for help. If you are proactive, and set up a chain group on Facebook or IG in advance, when a situation arises, you can hit up your PREPARED group and ask for help at a moment's notice. .
.

Do your best to make friends you can rely on so when you need a hand you can ask for one. If you have family close by that’s even better! If they are supportive give them a heads up of your schedule and see where they can step in and help out. .
.

Sadly, not everyone with CRPS had family they can rely on. In fact, most people with CRPS have had family members that have betrayed them, or turned their backs on them, since the onset of the disease, so reaching out to others, like friends and neighbors is a good idea. .
.

It’s a full time job and then some. But we love our CRPS loved ones and want to see them better above all else. Being strong and organized and doing more than you ever thought you could just might be the key ingredient to get that done. .

The brain uses the Vagus Nerve (a.k.a. Wandering Nerve as it connects to the base of the skulls & comes down either side of the neck, wanders around connecting to major organs) and is constantly sending signals from the brain to the body (called the Enteric Nervous System) including vocal cords, lungs, heart, and digestive tract. It conveys the flight-or-fight messages which causing hoarseness, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and butterflies in your stomach under high stress situations.
.
.

80-90% of the fibers from the Enteric Nervous System (which is a mesh-like network of neurons that controls the entire digestive tract) are actually going TO the brain, and not the other way around. If the Vagus Nerve was severed the entire network could operate ON IT’S OWN, still digest & dispose of our food & waste. .
.

Microbes in the gut produce more than 50% of the Dopamine “feel good” neurotransmitter found in the body & 90% of serotonin - 2 neurotransmitters that drastically control the mood (happy & pleasure). .
.

Gut bacteria is currently being tested for mental health benefits and treatments such as Probiotics and Fecal transplants. When researchers studied their brains, they found increased levels of & proteins related to learning & memory.

CRPS is known as the most painful disease on the planet, known to all humankind. It can attack anyone, at any time, after any injury. That is what makes it so scary, but what is it that makes it so PAINFUL?
.
.
* The symptoms, swelling, circulation, and pain never goes away or stops.
* It can spread to your whole body
* The pain is constant, unyielding, and level 10 to 12 pain.
* Emotions can make the pain worse - on the peripherals, and stress, or anger or fights can cause severe flare-ups on the limb or body part where the nerves are damaged and cause extreme swelling, heat/cold skin to the touch and other extremely painful issues.
* The skin and tissue temperatures can be 12-15 degrees below hyperthermic levels - or the opposite - 9-14 degree above regular body temperature, giving the feeling that the person is on fire from the inside. * Visible symptoms, it is controlled by the central and autonomic nervous system, and control the vasomotor systems (vascular), sudomotor (sweating), hair and nails, and inflammatory response, so most people live their lives in a constant state of swelling, with strange hair and nail issues, and major circulation issues, which can cause tissue, bone, and muscle death, which causes other issues like dystonia, tremors, and contortion.
* There are NO APPROVED therapies to stop the pain completely. The reason that opioids are not as effective with CRPS as they are with other pain condition is because there are two different types of nerves; nerves with & without fibers, so heavy pain medications like Fentanyl can’t attach to a fiber to bring relief to the pain, to bring it down to a zero.
* There is NO CURE for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. .

We continue to focus our week on our Caretakers because our Caretakers invest a lot of TIME in us. While we are focused on getting through the pain, they are focused on getting us through our Pain. .
.

When it comes to time, there is never enough - it is the one thing that never stops - and the one thing we never have enough of.
.
.

Prioritization. There are some events that take priority over others. With CRPS those priorities are going to change. Things like a Physical Therapy appointment take on a new meaning. Skipping PT isn't an option as muscle loss can happen as fast a 40% of muscle within two weeks and for a CRPS sufferer, once it is gone, the chances of gaining it back are VERY slim.
.
.

Talk to your boss at work and leave early to get him/her to their appointment or sign up for FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) which protects your job if you or a family member need time away from work for medical appointments. .
.

Schedule doctors appointments at the end of the day so that you can work the front half of the day & if you are able to, take the rest of the time off so that you can be there as support - most procedures & doctor’s appointment are stressful & might send them into a flare-up. .
.

Plan things out in advance as much as possible and prioritize what's important. When you are at the doctor’s office make sure you plan the next appointment in advance so you can plan around your work hours, making sure not to cause yourself more stress. The key to helping our loved ones with CRPS is making things easier and less stressful for you so that it will create a less stressful environment for them too. .

I feel like my hair is alllllways up now 🤓 the life of an athlete is a struggle sometimes. #afw2 #aftrials2019 #adaptiveathlete #weareoscarmike #complextruths
2019 is gonna be awesome! ComplexTruths,Inc., is a non-profit foundation located in the United States fighting a disease you may have never heard of, but probably know someone who has, called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, CRPS (called RSD, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy until 1994). It is the most painful condition known to human existence. It is a disease of the nervous system, starting after an injury on a limb, and amputation does not stop or cure it.
.
.

There are 200,000 known American's with this disease, but researchers believe the number could be as high as 5 million in the US have this disease, but it is undiagnosed or MISDIAGNOSED as other diseases like fibromyalgia, lupus, neuralgia, scleroderma, joint disorders and many other auto-immune diseases. .
.
.

Until we find a cure, others, like the 4.8 MILLION we believe are still undiagnosed in America alone, will continue to suffer with no medications, and no treatments that can cure, trying desperately to manage this condition on their own -- being left to suffer this horrendous condition with no end in sight. .
.
.

CRPS does not discriminate.
It doesn't care about age, creed, color or sex. It is a disease of the central & autonomous nervous system that can happen to any one, after any injury, at any time. .
.

It attacks and it is vicious. It destroys families and leaves people suffering in it's wake of suicide and sadness. .
.

It can happen to anyone at anytime, after any injury — simply stubbing your toe can cause this disease - are you next? Your wife? Your husband? Your child? You parents? .
.

At ComplexTruths Inc, we seek to not only spread awareness for CRPS, the most painful disease in the world with no cure, but we aim to provide hope to those who are afflicted with the disease.

Time. It’s the one thing that never stops - but the one thing we never have enough of.
.
.

The key to dealing with time is simple but also complicated - it’s all about getting more organized. Being well organized is a must when you are balancing the one you love, plus the duties of the house and possibly kids, meals, and your full time job. .
.

Use your cell phone to remind you of the things that you need to do. Shout out to Hey Siri (iOS) or Hey Google (Android) whenever you are asked to do something, or when you think of something you must do. Asking your smart technology to remind you to run to pick up a script at 3pm is much easier than being reminded at 9pm by your hurting spouse right as the pharmacy is closing. Even if you don’t use your speak technology, there are apps that can help you. Many of the larger pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS use reminder technology now to help you as well. .
.

There are also the new “smart home” technology apps like Alexa that can be installed right in your home to tell you to hit the road when it’s time to pick up the kids from dance, football, choir practice, you find you are driving all over the place, and not a moment to stop until you are head down on the pillow at night. Do your best to schedule out each day from the time you are going to get up, help your loved one with CRPS, get the kids on the bus or delivered to school and yourself to work. .
.

No phone or you hate technology? No problem! Use a calendar! You can go old school - yes, hand writing in calendars still works! We are all human and the stress of being a caretaker, parent and worker will undoubtedly cause you to forget just about everything. .
.
If you stay on a schedule and set reminders on your phone, computer, Alexa or calendar it will help you not have to think and subsequently forget what’s next. .

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, CRPS is the most painful condition known to human existence. It is a disease of the nervous system, starting after an injury on a limb. Once you get it, it can spread to anywhere on the body – including the brain, eyes, and ears.
.
.

.
.

When CRPS was defined and made an actual disease in 1994 by the International Associate by the Study of Pain it was broken down into two types; Type-1 and Type-2, under the guise of the Orlando Criteria (Named after it’s location in the United States). When it was joined withe the Budapest Criteria (diagnosed outside of the US), which has differing diagnosis criteria, it would leave those people out, so a third Type was created, Type-NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) to include them as a valid US diagnosed person.
.
.

Type-1 used to be called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), hence the confusion of the name and the many who still call it RSD. People with this type are those that receive their symptoms due to a noxious event (i.e., immobilization, sprain, stubbed toe, flu shot, soft tissue injury. It is often time more difficult to treat Type-1’s because the exact nerve that is injured is often times unknown. In 10% of cases, there is no known cause and it is marked “spontaneous”. .
.

Type-2 used to be called Causalgia (and was the first name ever given (identified during Civil War). This Type takes a physical trigger to activate, and there is a direct injury to a specific nerve and it is much easier to pinpoint the exact cause (i.e., gunshot wound, surgery, cut, accident, pinched nerve) and is usually along the median and sciatic nerve group. .

According to the World Heath Organization:  Although aircraft cabins are pressurized, cabin air pressure at cruising altitude is lower than air pressure at sea level. At typical cruising altitudes in the range ‪11 000–12 200‬ m (‪36 000–40 000‬ feet), air pressure in the cabin is equivalent to the outside air pressure at ‪1800–2400‬ m (‪6000–8000‬ feet) above sea level. As a consequence, less oxygen is taken up by the blood (hypoxia) and gases within the body expand.
.
.

Cabin air contains ample oxygen for healthy passengers and crew. However, because cabin air pressure is relatively low, the amount of oxygen carried in the blood is reduced compared with that at sea level. Passengers with certain medical conditions, CRPS included, but particularly heart and lung diseases and blood disorders such as anemia (in particular sickle-cell anemia), may not tolerate this reduced oxygen level (hypoxia) very well.
.
.

Additionally, cartilage does not have its own circulation and uses the circulation in the underlying bone.  However, if there is not sufficient circulation in the underlying bone, subchondral cysts (also called pseudocysts) develop.  Most patients with CRPS have subchondral cysts present throughout their body.  Due to the decreased cabin pressure, the subchondral cysts enlarge pressing upon the injured part of the cartilage and bone, which can cause an increase in pain.

Traveling during the holiday season is tough! Driving or flying can be very hard on your loved one with CRPS. There are some simple things you can do as a caretaker to make traveling a little easier and more comfortable.
.
.
Driving can be cramped, bumpy and long. Make sure and bring a couple of pillows, different sizes. A pillow on a lap and one on the lower back can make all the difference in comfort. If you are able move the seat back nice and far and have something available to prop up a leg as needed. Keeping that leg up if it’s got CRPS is critical and it can make it possible to travel by vehicle. .
.
Flying is much faster. But some things make all the difference for your loved one with CRPS. When making your reservation, if possible make sure you call ahead for Special Assistance. Also, bring travel pillows. You can use the pillows and a carry on to help them prop their legs, arms or head up. Regardless of flight time propping up that injured limb will make it much easier for them. .
.
In both cases help with loading up a tablet if you have one with a couple funny movies or episodes of a show they like. Laughter or light hearted programming can be a live saver while traveling and take their mind off of the flight time, driving time or any traffic or delays. .
.

In the end it’s important to realize that traveling is very difficult for your loved one with CRPS. Being prepared and having things on hand that keep your loved one as comfortable as possible is key. Deal with any stressful situations for them and do your best to keep things casual. Be responsive and keep things handy that they may need throughout the trip. .
.

Being a caretaker is a privilege and an honor. Treat your loved one with respect and love and they will arrive with a smile rather than a painful frown.

Treat your loved one with respect and love and they will arrive with a smile rather than a painful frown. . . #complextruths  #CRPSTruth  #phoenix  #invisibleillness  #CRPS1Name  #CRPS  #ChronicPain  #holidaytravel  #travel  #photography  #vacation  #nature  #adventure  #holiday  #holidays  #traveldisabled  #traveling  #christmas  #rsdcrps  #spoonies  #Caretakers  #crpsawareness  #spoonie  #rsd  #iamawarrior  #invisibledisease  #crpsforum  #painmanagement  #invisibledisease  #Pain
CRPS and Chronic Pain can cause the same type of grief that we feel when we lose someone, lose a job, go through a divorce or many other horrible and sad things in life that can cause us to go through the 5 stages of grief. But for people with chronic pain, those 5 stages of grief become a cycle, that repeats over and over, forever in our lives. .
.

For many, the cycle becomes one of misery, grief and pain. A never ending wheel of heartache where the pain is almost as horrible as the physical pain they feel every day. .
.

The trick to getting around the cycle, and finding peace with your life, is by picking a point on the cycle of grief where you want to be, whether that is in the Acceptance piece of the pie, and choosing to Explore New Options, or in Dialogue and Bargaining, and choosing to Help Others. .
.

Ofter times, the pain can drag you down so far into Depression, Anger, Shock and Denial, that we forget that we have a choice of how we want to live. This physical pain that we have on our bodies doesn’t DEFINE WHO WE ARE, it DOESN’T MAKE US who we are, it is just something that we carry with us, and we only have to remember that we are still who we are inside, hidden behind the pain and suffering. You are still you. .
.

CRPS may try to steal your body, but don’t let it steal your soul. Fight, every day you wake up, you need to fight, and never give up on you. .

The holiday season can be very stressful for anyone. For those that are caring for someone with CRPS, juggling both holiday stress and the everyday stress of caring for your loved one can be overwhelming. .
.

Unfortunately caretakers can be overlooked and feel as though they don’t deserve time here and there to deal with that stress. However, learning how to process your holiday and caretaker stress can make you not only a great caretaker that is very much appreciated but also someone full of holiday cheer!
.
.

Instead of letting yourself become overwhelmed with gift ideas, shopping, traffic, and hanging lights here are some ideas to make all of that a little easier so that you can give that loved one the attention they really need without being frustrated and upset. .
.

No matter what you do or don’t do, remember that as a caretaker your role is so very important and when you are stressed the person you are caring for can sense that stress and have a flare up. Take the time you need to compose yourself and let go of what is bothering you. In the end it’s better for you and for them. .
.

Traffic! No one likes traffic but when you are already stressed this can be a real trigger and something you carry all day. Go out early if you can, beat the crowds and maybe get some stuff done before you’re needed at home.
.
.

Shop online! Now days online shopping is so easy and convenient it can really save you a ton of stress. You can find great gift ideas and deals right from the comfort of your couch. When you’re needed you don’t have to worry because you are close by. .
.

Christmas lights. If you are one that has always hung lights but it seems out of the realm of possibility this year, see if you can get some friends or family to come and help. As a group you can get it done faster and easier. .

Every year in the news you hear heart warming stories of police officers who hang Christmas lights for disabled citizens to bring some joy to their holiday season. To those officers out there, we say "Thank you. You are amazing." .
.

Unfortunately, for most of us, that is not our reality. In years past, my house used to be THE neighborhood winner with the best decorations all done up with music you tune your car radio to. .
.

But this year, things are different. With the "diagnosis", and with my family being so busy with the new foundation, working 2 jobs and figuring out this new disabled life, my home will remain dark like many of my Spoonies out there. It's just "too much" on top of everything else, and that's ok. 🙂 It's all about priorities. .
.

But, priorities aside, there are ways to keep the holiday spirit without all the work and stress! .
.

If you are able to afford it, there are companies that will come to your home to hang the holiday lights for you to get you back in the Holiday spirit. Just Google "Holiday Light Hangers".
.
.

If money is tight, you can always check in with your church, local community support group or HOA for help (although don't count on help from the HOA as most probably won't respond - mine didn't). .
.

Even if you don't hang lights, just remember that the spirit of the holiday's is in your heart. It's not really about the decorations and Hallmark cards anyways. Instead, find someone online who is truly alone for the holidays and make a friend, because you never know, you just might save a life. ♥️

Norepinephrine is a natural occurring chemical that acts as both a stress hormone (it is responsible for the fight-or-flight response) and a neurotransmitter that sends signals between cells. Norepinephrine’s role is to communicate between the heart and the skeletal muscles to increase speed and make you faster. It also tells the blood vessels to constrict, increasing the blood pressure.
.
.

The other role that it plays is to trigger the release of sugar into the blood stream. This can have a huge effect on mood, ability to think, mental state, & depression.
.
.

Norepinephrine is also a NATURAL PAIN FIGHTER. Herein lies the problem for those of us with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and one reason WHY it’s the most painful disease in the world. .
.

Our natural pain fighters are EXHAUSTED.
.
.

As norepinephrine is released from the ends Sympathetic Nerve fibers whenever the fight-or-flight response is activated - and for people with CRPS that is constantly occurring throughout the day, every time your Sympathetic Nervous System fires off. Your norepinephrine reserves are EMPTY. .
.

To make more, you would have to increase your energy levels, then build it up in your system (rest, recovery, digestion) again. like a healthy person. Ways to build up norepinephrine in your system including the following: * Exercise (R)
* Cold Exposure (R)
* Phenylalanine (precursor)
* Tyrosine (precursor)
* Mucuna (contains L-Dopa)
* Acetyl L-Carnitine (R)
* Nicotine (R, R, R) (Not cigarettes)
* Bitter orange (with Rhodiola) (R)
* Rhodiola (with bitter orange) (R) (inhibits MAOA and COMT)

Do you have a patient who is presenting with pain after an injury or surgery that is burning/shocking, their limb is cold (or hot) to the touch, & discolored?
.
.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, (CRPS) is a disease of the Central and Automous Nervous System. It starts after ANY injury. Once a patient presents, they have a limited time to AGGRESSIVELY treat it. The risk of spreading to other limbs & organs is up to 70%. .
Learn the criteria: https://complextruths.org/pain
.
.

There are no definitive tests, but one of the best tests that you can do is a Thermography. 70% of patients that present with CRPS present with “hot” skin temperatures on the affected limb running as high as 14 degrees over the other limb, and 30% presenting up to 14 degrees COLDER than the other limb! .
.

A Thermograph measures the skin temperature and blood flow of your affected and unaffected limbs which is can aid in a diagnosis, but the disease is tricky. Some people don’t always present the hot/cold symptoms all the time. CRPS can hide, so tell your patient to record the symptoms when they happen.
.
.

There is NO TEST that can definitively identify CRPS, but you can begin to rule it out. LEARN THE SYMPTOMS.

When diagnosed with CRPS, the most painful, neurological disease in the world, that can cripple you overnight, all from an injury you expected to get over, you have to accept a new reality. That reality involves shopping for wheelchairs, handicap parking placards, wrist crutches, shower seats, and specialized accessories for the handicapped. .
.

As you enter a new world you probably never thought you would be a part of, you realize how unprepared you are. Like you, I had no idea what to do, or where to go. .
.

Learning about "mobility aides" has been eye opening to say the least. There are aides for just about every aspect, and every limb. .

The biggest hump to get over is the mental one. ACCEPTING that this is your new reality comes with the territory. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can get on with life and enjoy LIVING again. Mobility aides are there to get you OUT and LIVING LIFE again. Plus, people have been wonderful. A whole new world is out there if you open yourself to it. Such kindness. .
.

Being disabled doesn't make you less of a person. Using a wheelchair because your leg fills with fluids and blood doesn't mean that you are anything less than who you are. Using a scooter or walker to stay upright doesn't mean you have given up. All of these aides mean you are fighting to live a normal life. Outside of your bedroom and fighting for normalcy is a GOOD THING. .
.

So battle on Warriors. ⚔️🛡⚔️ Fight each and every day like it is your only day and never give up. 🧡

There are aides for just about every aspect, and every limb. . . The biggest hump to get over is the mental one. ~~ "Trial by Fire" Trailer, Part 2 of 2
* WATCH PART 1 FIRST .
.
November is Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome / Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Awareness Month. That is the predominant disease I suffer from, with full body crps. Although I am happy to share my story, nothing is as impactful as seeing reality thru your own eyes. So now every year I aim to spread the word about a film titled "Trial By Fire" (a pretty popular title ). This "Trial By Fire" provides a raw, painfully truthful look into the lives of people with crps / rsd and how important it is for everyone to be aware of the disease, forwarding not only public awareness, knowledge, and understanding, but also education throughout the medical community & research for preventive measures, better help for those afflicted, & the Hope of hope - a cure.
.
You can rent "Trial By Fire" thru their website : https://www.trialbyfiremovie.com , but if you are unable to watch the film right now, I ask that you please take 2 minutes & at least watch the Trailer that I have posted in a Part 1 & Part 2 (to fit IG).
.
Knowledge is power & crps / rsd is too devastating not to know about. You never think it could be you, but Anyone can get it. Even from an injury as small as a cut or a bruise. For me it began with a spinal injury while working in Alaska in 2002.
.
The best preventative at this time (Children included) is to take high-dose vitamin C following any injury. Recommended dosage is a daily, 500-mg dose of vitamin C for a duration of 50 days.
.
Thank You for giving this post your attention. I hope that you will share this with others, but I also hope that this will never affect you or anyone that you love. “This”, known as a “Suicide Disease" and "Most Painful Disease In The World". It will prevent you from moving, you will lose control of your motor functions, it will change your brain chemistry & negatively affect other organs, while shortening your lifespan & being more painful than childbirth, cancer, & amputation, & that is just part of it... Loss of close relationships who cannot or will not understand has become the hardest for me. Special Thank You for those who still care & show it 🙏.

Mast cells are in all of the tissues throughout the human body, especially connective tissue, skin, intestinal lining cardiovascular system, nervous system, and reproductive organs and they are part of the allergic response that protects us from threat and injury. MCAD is an auto-immune disorder when histamines go haywire.
.
.

Symptoms include hives, swelling, flushing, gastrointestinal issues, shortness of breath, itching, wheezing, anxiety, "writing" on your skin, heart palpitations, low blood pressure, fatigue, brain fog, headaches. .
.

MCAD is an immunological condition in which mast cells inappropriately and excessively release chemical mediators, like histomines, resulting in a range of chronic symptoms, sometimes including anaphylaxis or near-anaphylaxis attacks, often times causing your skin to hive up and turn red, or cause your soft tissues to swell in the throat, esophagus, stomach lining, & mouth. Anaphylaxis is an acute life-threatening systemic reaction that results from the sudden, rapid, systemic release of mediators.
.
.

It can be triggered by the fragrance in your soap, shampoo, when you scratch yourself, sunlight, chemicals, latex, insect sting, food, and other triggers.
.
.

A lot of people assume that their Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) causes similar symptoms. While MCAD is very often associated with CRPS, EDS, & POTS (which are all associated with CRPS), don't let CRPS become a "kitchen sink" disease.
.
.

Treatment includes; Epi-Pen, H1 Blockers, H2 Blockers, Leukotriene inhibitors, Mast cell stabilizers, Tyrosine kinase inhibitors – imatinib, natural anti-histamines and mast-cell stabilizers.

ASMR is a video trend on YouTube that quickly picked up speed for it’s amazingly unique ability to offer a new way to offer relaxation, destress, and even sleep.
.
.

So what is ASMR? ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, and it’s a strange recent phenomenon where people film themselves on YouTube doing very strange things, and making strange noises. It can be anything from telling jokes or reading fairytales in a whisper, doing make-up videos, or scraping knives on a plate, nails on a chalkboard, or eating chewy food, but what you don’t realize is that these sounds, while some may cringe at the thought, can actually offer some people a BRAIN MASSAGE!
.
.

There are over 13 million videos on YouTube devoted to this craze, and that many people can’t be wrong, so while your jaw is dropping open at the thought of listening to someone whisper into a mic, or eat a piece of squeaky clean honeycomb, consider this…
.
.

ASMR is a type of sensory stimulus that helps you to relax and could actually kick in your parasympathetic nervous system and STOP THE PAIN. It could help bring a relaxing sensation that begins at the scalp, and move down the body as you watch, in a very non-sexual way, someone paint a cloud on canvas (thanks Bob Ross) or cut soap. .
.

ASMR can help lower stress levels, fight anxiety, and help you get some much needed sleep. Even researchers are looking into this craze that started in 2010 and putting some real efforts into understanding how the brain works and why one man’s cringe is another woman’s heaven.
If you are looking for a relaxing, calming sensation that can reduce your heart rate and possibly even lower your pain levels, maybe you don’t have to look any further than YouTube. You have 13million choices after all…
.
.

Happy Hunting!

Did you know that there is defined criteria available to help you diagnose your patient when they present with the symptoms or CRPS the first time? .
.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, CRPS, is not a well known disease. The average diagnosis time in the US is 3 years and 8 doctors. In that time, your patient is left to suffer with THE MOST PAINFUL DISEASE IN THE WORLD, and the longer they go untreated, the greater chance the disease will spread throughout their system. That’s right, this disease can spread - anywhere they have nerves, so yeah…everywhere.
.
.

CRPS is a disease of the Central & Autonomic Nervous System, and if the peripheral is treated, spreading may occur. The nervous system much be treated to avoid spreading, give your patients a gift this holiday and diagnose them the 1st time1
.
.

The IASP criteria includes continuing pain that is disproportionate to the inciting injury (which can be ANY type of injury), 1 symtom in 3 of the 4 categories (sensory; hyperesthesia and/or allodynia, vasomotor; temp asymmetry or skin discoloration, sudomotor/edema; edema or sweating asymmetry, motortrophic; weakness, tremor, dystonia, or trophic changes to nail & skin). .
.

Must have 1 sign at time of clinical eval - Sensory, vasomotor, sudomotor/edema, motortrophic. .

I used to be THAT girl, you know the one I mean, the one that made sure that I never had a grey hair (did I just write that?!?) that I was perfectly polished, my nails were done, and even though I’ve got a kid in college, I still looked 27. I paid $150 every 6 weeks for the PERFECT mane…yeah, that was me. .
.

But, then I fell down a mountain…
.
.

LITERALLY. .
.

You know that Chris Farley ha-ha funny video where it’s like “This is how 2018 started” and he’s falling down a mountain? Yah, that was me. But, I didn’t get up and walk off, well — I did, but then I had surgery and the rest is history, now I have a burning grease fire in my leg and we all know how fun that is. Not.
.
.

So I stopped caring about how I look, how I dress, franking, if I do my make-up it’s a SPECIAL day, and heck, if I wash my hair, it’s a holiday. There is so much more now to worry about in life, that the LAST thing I care about anymore is my physical appearance, and standing in front of a mirror for 45 minutes as a blow out my golden locks is LAUGHABLE. .
.

So, I have made friends with headbands! I order them in every color, every outfit. Throw in the perfect charcoal based dry shampoo, and wa-la! I can get by at least another 3 months before it’s SUPER noticeable that I have grey hair instead of blond hair, or that I haven’t quite washed it and no one is the wiser, I still look young and fashionable ;) .
.

Stay healthy& YOUNG looking this holiday season. 🎄

🎄 . . #complextruths  #CRPSTruth  #phoenix  #invisibleillness  #CRPS1Name  #CRPS  #ChronicPain  #rsdcrps  #spoonies  #headbands  #crpsawarenessmonth  #crpsawareness  #spoonie  #rsds  #iamawarrior  #invisibledisease  #crpsforum  #painmanagement  #kratom  #invisibledisease  #joy  #family  #love  #holidaycheer  #Christmasspirit  #giftofgiving  #giving  #Christmasgift  #Christmas  #fashion  #head

With the most wonderful time of year 😕 comes the Cold & Flu. Those nasty little green buggers we all envision want to enter our bodies through our sinuses, keeping us up late into the night in misery as we sniffle and groan into the 60th tissue of the day. While millions are getting the flu shot, you wonder... is it safe for those of us with CRPS? .
.

Getting sick would just cause pain ON TOP of our PAIN and we all know that would be the worst of the worst. But what we want to know is one thing...
.
.

Will the needle from the flu shot cause SPREADING? .
.

While there have been documented cases of this happening, it is less common than more common. If you are at a high risk for getting sick, due to a low immune system from working in a highly populated area like a hospital, school, in public areas or have small children at home you may want to.
.

If you & your doctor decide it is worth the risk to get the Flu Shot, there are ways to help mitigate that risk, you can take medications to calm the nervous system (Xanax), practice calming the Parasympathetic Nervous System (deep breathing, not looking at the needle, and listening to calming music) using a smaller, pediatric needle, and doing it on the opposite side of the body from the CRPS limb (if possible). .
.

If you vote to stay needle free, make sure that you stay loaded up on your vitamins (A,B2,B6,B12,C,D,E,K) all season, get extra sleep (at least 8 hours), and wash your hands - and your kids hands - frequently. .
.

With CRPS comes a struggling immune system that is doing everything it can to keep your body surviving on an every day basis. While some of us with CRPS suffer from an autoimmune disease, others of us do not, so the question of whether or not to get a flu shot, and the risk associated, is between you and your doctor. .
.

Stay healthy this holiday season. 🎄

Did you know that a patient who presents with severe, non-stop pain that is disportionate to the original injury, may have a disease called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)? CRPS is not well understood, or known, but it is the most painful condition known to human existence. It is a disease of the Central and Automous Nervous System, and it starts after an injury on a limb. Once a patient shows the first signs of it, they have a limited amount of time to quickly, and AGGRESSIVELY, treat it, or there is A HIGH RISK it can spread to anywhere on the body – including the brain, eyes, and ears.

Any injury, from a bee sting, needle puncture, surgery, twisted ankle, or any type of direct or non-direct injury to a nerve can cause CRPS. It can happen to anyone, at any time, after any injury, to any limb. It can also begin in the abdomen. .
.

There are many clues that can help you identify CRPS. The first being DISPORPORTIONATE PAIN that NEVER STOPS or gets to a zero. If your patient states that it goes away when they are sitting on the couch, watching a movie, and it gets to zero, it's probably NOT CRPS. .
.

There is no test that can definitively identify if it is CRPS, but you can begin to rule it out with other tests. .

It's tough to find that holiday spirit. Joy, happiness, love, and giving seen a million miles away when all you can think about is those who abandoned you in your greatest time of need - and worst if all - your PAIN.
This year is my first year battling this monster disease, Complex Reginal Pain Syndrome, the most painful disease known to humankind, with no known cure, that spreads to your whole body through an injury to a limb, and no medicine in the planet can stop the pain. There is nothing like it, and nothing worse. .
.

It's been a rough year, and after rupturing my knee, getting CRPS, losing my job, faling again and tearing my shoulder and slipping 3 discs in my neck & back, I've been stuck in a wheelchair now for 11 months. It's been hard but I'm a fighter. 🛡⚔️🛡
.
.

Yesterday, for the 1st time in my adult life, I watched my family adorn our Xmas tree while I watched. I felt like a passenger in my own life. Where I had so perfectly, with precise precision, threaded the ribbon, I watched from afar as my two daughters and husband worked as a team to try to do what I had done the last 18 years. .
.

I won't lie. It was hard. It was one more reminder of "the things I cannot do". .
.

Tears welled up, and for a moment, I felt that nostalgia and sadness grab my heart. But, then I realized what all mother's sooner or later realize. .
.
This was my gift, and I was SO blessed. 😇 There they were, the 3 of them, trying their hardest to do the tree just as I had before I got CRPS. All they wanted was to bring me JOY and happiness. .
.

Then it hit me! THIS is the reason for the season - to bring joy & happiness! If even a morsal, to someone's life, to make something easier for them. To make them happy. To remind me that I still matter. To bring me JOYFULNESS. .
.

Yesterday, my family did that for me. Thank you my wonderful family for that gift. For bringing me the Christmas Spirit of JOY and love. ♥️

Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS) is a “diagnosis” that some doctors use for patients who have symptoms of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome but used in solidarity when doctors believe the symptoms to be caused by psychological factors. Many doctors and medical facilities use it as a "code" for “psychological stress”. If you are diagnosed with AMPS make sure you are also diagnosed with CRPS as you need the physical aspect to go with the psychological aspect of the disease. AMPS alone is a "RED FLAG". .
Learn more facts: https://complextruths.org/pain
.
.

As CRPS can ONLY begin after an injury to a nerve, (either directly or indirectly) if you hear this term used, that should be a “RED FLAG” that your doctors does not understand CRPS and does not know how to treat it effectively, believes that you need psychological treatment and you should leave and find a different doctor. .
.

Facilities that only treat AMPS without treating the physical aspects of CRPS may use a multidisiplinary intensive outpatient program designed to treat the psychological state of the patient focusing on occupational therapy, stress management, art and music to relax, individual and group therapy, and relaxation techniques vs the physical aspect. While some of these may help deactivate the sympathetic response system, they are not treating the physical aspect of the central nervous system disease. Some insurance companies think that an AMPS only program is enough on its own and but it's not. Make sure you have the multi-disipline approach and get the physical portion covered too. .

Sometimes all we need is a new perspective. When we spend 11 months of the year staring at life from the safety of our cozy beds, through tears, and only seeing the ceilings above our heads, life begins to take on a dreary, closed-in, silo’d feeling. We spend most of our time focusing on the pain and nausea - and when that becomes our world, it’s hard to see beyond that. .
.

This holiday season, find an extra spoon or two, and get out of the bedroom, and house if you can, and spend some time volunteering at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, humane society, or just online, helping others. You would be surprised to find that by encouraging and lifting up others you too will feel better. .
.

You will also find that when you help out the less fortunate, and bring joy to another’s life, you will inevitable bring joy to your life too, and bit by bit, you will push the pain to the back of your brain and find a new positive past-time that brings a new joy to your life. .
.

ComplexTruths.org is hoping to help that by spreading awareness to every corner of the earth as fast as we can we, too bring joy this next year.

CRPS is a VERY complicated disorder. As a parent, fear for your child increases your willingness to trust the first physician that is willing to help. It's important to be aware that children are very easy to misdiagnose with “psychological or mental disorders”. .

Before taking your child anywhere, check the references with other parents in the area or check the hospital sources. Beware of “Academic Hospitals” which are filled with residents (new doctors) that may not be familiar with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, which is the most painful condition known to human existence. It is a disease of the nervous system, starting after an injury on a limb. Once you get it, it can spread to anywhere on the body – and due to lack of experience, a new doctor may inaccurately diagnose your child.
.
.

Our Board of Directors has worked in CRPS for over 4 decades and knows that once something is put in your Child's Medical Record, it is permanent. If you go to a facility or hospital that is not familiar with CRPS, and they misdiagnose it, because they are not trained in the disease, or they are not staffed appropriately (for example, they have psychiatrists onsite to diagnose a neurological or pain disorder) then your child may get diagnosed with a mental disorder or “psychiatric disorder” and that will always remain in their record. .
.

Diagnosing your child, and even you, correctly, is imperative, early on, to give you the best chance possible at the right treatment. Finding a CRPS doctor that is a generalist and offers a multi-discipline approach is also generally a good way to go (unless you have researched a specific treatment that you know you want after you have been accurately diagnosed). .

The pain is real -it cuts like a knife. In the last 5 years, 20.2% of all deaths in the Unites States are due to suicide - and many of those deaths happen during the holidays. For survivors CRPS, the pain is made worse because each of us has lost a person that we love because of this disease. .
.

This disease doesn’t just steal your body from you, it steals your heart too. People that you thought loved you, hit the road when you lost yourself to the disease - because you've changed, they don’t believe IN the disease, they FEAR the disease, or they don’t UNDERSTAND the disease.
.
.

Every person that I speak with has lost someone that they they loved, and the holidays have a way of bringing back that pain. Instead of finding sorrow in those memories, try to turn those memories into learning moments and reflect on what you learned from that person, and how you can take that experience into future relationships. Meditate, pray, and try to FORGIVE that person for what they did to you. Write your feelings into a journal, talk about it with someone, because ultimately, it is up to you to try to finally heal from that heartache and pain so that you can move on and have better - more fruitful relationships - from people that LOVE YOU for YOU. No matter what. In sickness and in health. For the beautiful you that you are. .

Once you get it, it can spread to anywhere on the body – including the brain, eyes, and ears. . . Learn more facts: https://complextruths.org/pain . For the beautiful you that you are. . . Children can develop CRPS the exact same way that adults do. Children develop the same burning, bone aching, painful, blood circulation issues and neurological symptoms that adults do. They are just smaller humans, and how severe their symptoms are will depend on factors such as family history, or if there are other neurological issues that run in the family (like Parkinson’s, MS or others, like tremors and dystonia). Children may not always understand fully what is happening but they do understand PAIN and they have one thing that most adults don’t have. RESILIENCY.
.
.

Dr. Chopra, ComplexTruths, Inc., Board Director, states that 58-93% of children that he treats, get better. These children generally present with headaches, body-wide pain and belly pain and it is not uncommon to see allergies or sensitivities to medications or food.
.
.

Treating children is opposite of adults. In adults, pain is addressed first, whereas with children, they address function first - putting them in a boot camp exercise program. Dr. Chopra has also seen a pattern where children have multiple disorders such as #EDS (a connective tissue disorder) or #POTS and Mast Cell Disorder along with CRPS and treats each disorder seperate. .

November makes 10 months since I fell down stairs and developed CRPS/RSD in my right ankle foot and hip. This year may be almost over but I am not done Fighting for a treatment that can help me walk again. Options are getting limited and I'm out of funds after losing my career. Praying next week and the few weeks to come I can come up with a plan of treatment. Or several) 🙏
Until then and after it's in Gods hands....
I will continue to fight and spread awareness about a disease noone knows about until it takes everything and almost everyone away from you and the ability to walk drive and live a productive life. 😭

Black Friday was named for retailers who had been in the “red” all year long. Their accounting books were negative from payroll, maintaining inventory, advertising, rent, and all of their other business expenses. Today is that "special day" when they open their doors early and put everything on sale to get their books in the BLACK to settle the year in the postive.
.
.

That means great deals for all, but it means LOTS of people, and lots of cars on the road. One bump, from a car, or person, could be DETRIMENTAL to someone with CRPS. Saving $200 may look good to your bank account, but consider the cost if you go into a flare.
.
.

Don’t forget that retailers are offering deals online this year. Amazon is doing hourly deals, tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, and don’t forget about Cyber Monday. .
.
While you may feel like you are missing out, it may be safer, for you and your painful limbs, to stay safe and sound indoors this weekend. Remember, they are called “Accidents” for a reason.
.
.

So get comfy, pour a cup of hot cocoa, put on a Christmas movie, and shop online. Start the holidays out right. .

Tremors - at various frequencies - have previously been documented by survivors of CRPS - and have been documented in many CRPS patients. In 1991, a study was conducted that tested tremors with patients who had both Type-1 CRPS in the upper extremity and Parkinson’s, either anatomically or temporally, and discovered that the onset of tremor showed within 2 months after a local injury in 65% of cases.
.

This is thought to be due to how the Sympathetic Nervous System interacts with the reflexes and muscle tone which may also be directly related to the change in
the activity of the sympathetic nervous system in CRPS and might explain why the peripherally-induced movement disorders have a tendency to spread beyond the original site of injury. An alternative hypothesis is that the injury may cause the tremors by triggering what may have been something that was pre-existing like Parkinson’s. More research is necessary. .
.

Treatment has included various medical and surgical treatment options, but with limited success.
* Botox may provide temporary relief up to four months. * Ventrolateral thalamotomy may sometimes produce improvement .T
* High frequency thalamic stimulation- particularly in elderly patients and when bilateral effects are desirable.

At first glance, one would say I had a horrible year. I started out the year literally falling down a mountain. That ended badly. With an ACL ruptured so severely that the doctor had to retreive it from my ankle during surgery. My MCL and meniscus had torn too, so that I had to use my own hamstring to reconstruct the ACL.
.
.

After the 2-3 months of shock, tears and depression, after seeing the words "Suicide Disease" I decided that I was going to wipe those words off the face of Google. I gathered my courage and found my strength through the grace of God. I met Pastor Z - with the Bikers for Christ - and from that point, my life's purpose was on a journey and set on a course that was beyond anything I ever could control. God had me now and there was little I could do to stop it. .
.

Since that day, I have witnessed miracle after miracle - too amazing to deny - and here we are, together under this awe-inspiring organization called ComplexTruths. .
.

This very week we announced our amazing Board of Directors for a foundation that is on a path to reach as many people as possible.
.
.

So regardless of the pain, the family and friends I lost, I am SO THANKFUL for this year, for this horrible, crazy, disease but I wouldn't be here helping bringing awareness if not for getting it. It's been the worst and best year all tied together and I would never go back and change a thing. .
.

We are more than just another foundation. We are the people's foundation - we are here to fight for YOU. We are here to listen and build many services for YOU. .
.

For all of this, we are so very thankful. For all of it. For you, the Board of Directors, the volunteers, the supporters, and even those who turned their backs - for in their own way, they ALL made us stronger. 💪

Rising up from the ashes of CRPS, bringing HOPE for a new day to all the WORLD. 🌏

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a time of gathering, and of giving thanks - but it’s also a time of bustle, and families, noise, chatter, movements, and lots and lots of stress. All of which can cause those of us with CRPS - which is a neuro-inflammatory disease - to inflame. 🔥
.
.

One habit that many survivors do is ESCAPE. Bedrooms and easy chairs make for a fast and easy get-away. If you find it hard to hang around when there is a lot of noise, try these tips to stay “present” and enjoy yourself:
.
.

Avoid time with people that you don’t get along with. Thanksgiving is a joyful holiday and it’s vacation time for many. Try to schedule that time with true friends to make the most out of your time. Obligation is no fun for anyone.
.
.

Try to be an observer without passing judgement. We ask others to do that for us with “invisible illnesses” all the time. Offer others the same respect. You never know what is going on in someone’s life until you ask. .

Practice mindfulness - don’t let others words or judgements upset you. If they don’t understand the disease, send them to our website and help explain it to them. Information is power. Explain it to them so they understand & avoid using words like "Suicide Disease" as fear tends to push some people away. .

Be thankful. You are still here and you are still YOU! .

Often times, many patients will get diagnosed only with CRPS, when in fact they have CRPS plus other disorders that require different and seperate treatments. .
.

Many patients with CRPS may actually have multiple disorders that may have led to CRPS; such as EDS, POTS, and/or Mast Cell Disorder. .
.

Maybe that bladder pain is simply a bladder infection, and that toothache is simply a cavity.

.

@russellsemmler ComplexTruths Board of Director for Physical Therapy, is a huge advocate of making sure that you get checked out by your doctor when you have a new symptom to make sure that whatever ails you may be a treatable issue that is outside of CRPS. .
