We have been meeting with the formerly incarcerated community since April to hear their visions and ideas for how they want to uplift their community and what they need from their next mayor. Thank you to the community organizers for organizing a phenomenal meeting hosted by the Grand Major Unity Temple in South Shore for Paul to hear the concerns of the community!
Stay tuned for a comprehensive policy surrounding Reentry after our series of forums and circles with the community. This is a serious issue that needs constant feedback from the community.
Have you been into @wanderingcooks lately...that the the amazing place where I started EveryMite. On-call volunteers with a heart for foster children spend time in their local child welfare office caring for children who have just been removed from their homes - children who are waiting to be placed in a foster home or relative's care. This short training will prepare volunteers for their time in the office. Applicants need only attend one of the scheduled trainings. Applicants should be able to pass a background check given by the state and have some availability to volunteer Monday through Fridays during business hours. Come learn how you can make a real difference in the life of a foster child! Ask questions by emailing Tumwater@officemomsanddads.com
Sometimes, one finds this pretty sight gently swaying in the breeze at the back of a loom.
So what are we looking at here?
This is the silk warp of a maheshwari Saree being woven on a frame loom at WomenWeave in Maheshwar.
A frame loom will often feature a warp beam which evenly spaces the warp threads and maintains even tension throughout the cloth as it is woven. This is useful when meterage or large runs of the same cloth is being woven. In a rural set up you will often find that the warp comes off the warping wheel and is wound into balls (as pictured here) which are suspended from the rear crossbar of the loom with a system of weights.
This warp-ball and weight system is much more time consuming for the weaver, who constantly shifts between weaving, separating the starched warp threads as they tangle and readjusting the warp weights. As the woven cloth is completed it gets wrapped around the front beam of the loom and so more thread must be provided by the untwisting of the warp balls and readjustment of tension.
While this system increases time at the loom for the weaver it is far superior for the traditional and small scale handloom economy where the weaver's strength lies in their flexibility and variety of skill.
Traditionally weavers needed to be able to produce varied cloths of varied yarn for various applications as demanded by the local market. Furthermore, the variety of woven products draws and builds on the weavers skills maintaining the artisanal nature of the handloom rather than reducing it to monotonous job work •
I was a Probation Officer in this county from 2001-2011. I was there when they closed the old Juvenile Hall and opened the new “environmentally green” juvenile hall. There was a riot on the bus when they transported the kids up the hill. And the original plan was to build this Hall even further away from Oakland, in the outskirts of our county and more than 500 🛏 beds! Thanks to people like Zachary Norris and @ellabakercenter that didn’t happen. Today it’s an honor to provide community based services, investing in violence prevention at the community level to increase public safety instead of incarceration. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🎄🎄🎄🎄

Health and mental wellness back to the community. Mason alumni never disappoint. Can’t wait for all the amazing events to come.

Students spent several weeks learning elements of community-based play development with #appliedtheatre practitioner, #LillianRibeiro @lilly_lips. They met with the local residents of the Newark's #BethanySeniorCenter to build relationships through #storycircles a #storytelling model originally developed by #JunebugProductions and #FreeSouthernTheater . Students and seniors met again later in the semester to engage in deeper conversations in their one-on-one interviews. These monologues were transcribed word-for-word from students' handwritten notes and received feedback from the elders for revisions. These narratives received final approval for our students to share these personal narratives as a performed piece.
📖🎭 With the company of #Newark 's Bethany Senior Center elders, we invite YOU to witness this original #communitybased#intergenerational#performance work at @runewark, #BradleyHallTheatre (third floor) on Monday, December 10th at 10 AM. Doors open at 9:30 am as rutgersnjittheatre "From Page to Stage" students go "Into the Past with the Bethany Seniors of Newark" 🎭 Join us!
