I didn't know that Riga would have a Stalin's tooth as well.
New York has Macy’s, London has Harrod’s, but Minsk has...GUM! Visitors to Minsk expecting a heavenly shopping experience in a big department store, may well be directed to GUM, the official government department store. You are unlikely to find familiar labels in this 1950’s example of Stalinist neo classical architecture. The shopaholic is in no danger of overspending on the credit card here, in this time capsule from the Cold War era. Indeed, the diligent staff reflect the ideals of the communist state at the time, as they are all dressed in a militaristic drab green uniform, appearing like grown up Girl Scouts, but with no tent or camp to supervise. Things are beginning to change in Belarus and the young show hunger for the brands and luxuries that they may see if visiting other European capitals. While Minsk may not be a shopper’s paradise, there are rewards here for the visitor, such as excellent and good value food and drink, probably the cleanest streets in the World and also perhaps the safest...as you wouldn’t want to be breaking the law here! #street #streets #streetstory #streetstorytelling #streetphotos #streetphotography #streetphotographer #streetphotographers #departmentstore #departmentstores #communistarchitecture #stalinistarchitecture #store #storedesign #travelpics #travelphoto #travelphotostory #travelphotography #travelphotographer #igerphoto #igerstreet #iger #sonyphotography #sonyphotographer #sonyphotographers
