Do you ever get a whiff of something cooking and it immediately takes you back to a time or place? Black eyed peas were a staple as I grew up in Alabama. I literally could eat them every day. But I know sometimes it wasn't my stomach I was feeding, it was my heart. The beauty of this is that though I regret not learning a lot of the recipes from my childhood like the fried cornbread fritters, fried chicken, fried okra, I also don't over eat.
I watched the women in my family suffer from preventable diseases mostly tied to food and unhealthy lifestyles and it crushed me. I was on the same path for a long time, bad food, smoking, no exercise, internalizing stress, etc. But I was lucky enough to meet some great people in college that began to show me the way.
I got my 1st certification in 1997 and became a personal trainer. I was still a closet smoker for a lot of those years. It was my xanax at the time because of my marriage until I developed anxiety attacks in 2001. The effects of 9/11 had shaken me to my core. Full disclosure...I have to take xanax still if I fly.
What I didn't realize about all these happenings is that it was changing my health. I was alone in Dallas after an ugly divorce and food suddenly was gross. I lived on a lot of protein shakes. However at 29 my body "looked" amazing. I was at 11% body fat and you could see every muscle in my body. But the inside was a whole different world. I didn't sleep. I drank a lot of alcohol. I worked out 2-3 times a day.
I was starving for love. For acceptance. For family.
So I remember my friend coming over and making me the best southern meal. It was so good. I ate every bite! I realized that even though some of it was fried, it was emotionally healthy for me at the moment. So I began my life of cooking. Finding healthier ways to make dinner of my favorite southern favorites like this quinoa bowl. Quinoa, squash, zucchini, greens, roasted tomatoes and black eyed peas. Yummm.
So remember, no matter where you are, you can find home. Just make sure it's good for you. Nourishing your body and your soul. Allow yourself to indulge in the memory, not the food, and find great people to share it with!
A true comfort dish for dinner tonight. Chili beans, rice pilaf, sauerkraut, and sweet cornbread. It was so good. Each element complimented each other. Wow was it filling! Don’t knock it till ya try it!
