In today's fraught political climate, it's easy to forget that the story of 'Russian' civilization actually has its roots in Ukraine.
St Volodymyr's Cathedral (described by a source no less authoritative than Google Maps as 'vivid yellow') was commissioned in the 1850s, to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Prince Vladimir of Kyiv's conversion to Christianity. In 1992, it was the object of a bitter power struggle between two rival Ukrainian Orthodox Churches - the Kyiv Patriarchy and the Moscow Patriarchy - although thankfully, no blood was spilt. Today St Volodymyr's functions as the mother cathedral of the Kyiv Patriarchy. - Joe
“We’re always on native land.” Thus Angela Valenzuela opened TC’s 5th annual Edmund W. Gordon Lecture – named for the TC professor emeritus whom the New York Times called the greatest black psychologist of his generation. With Gordon, 97, looking on, Valenzuela, a leader in ethnic studies, argued that educators must “situate ways of knowing in an indigenous epistemology” by turning to the knowledge and expertise in communities. While doing so is critical to “decolonizing” education for minority students, Valenzuela said “the real justification for including aboriginal students in the modern curriculum is that non-aboriginals are so sorely in need of what aboriginals have to offer.” She urged those in fields such as African-American studies, Mexican-American studies and Women and Gender Studies to unite under one banner. This year’s Gordon Lecture anchored the College’s week-long Reimagining Education Institute, which equips teachers to make subject matter relevant for America’s increasingly diverse classrooms. Ferrero is highly profitable—Forbes estimates the company nets about 10% of sales—and is sitting on a pile of billions in cash. At its core, the chocolate business is a branding game. Every purveyor sells roughly the same commodities. Yet by some alchemy, or marketing savvy, Ferrero's goods have traditionally commanded a higher devotion. Nutella especially so. When Columbia University began offering the spread (a blend mainly of cocoa, sugar, hazelnuts and milk) at a dining hall in 2013, students smuggled it out like bandits, sending costs up a reported $5,000 in a week. In January, after a French grocery chain marked down jars by 70%, riots ensued.

happy Mother's Day to an insanely cool woman who went from singing in a choir for the pope to singing Stevie Wonder to her baby daughter and inspiring her to one day become a performer. I dedicated this to her at @nonsequigram's Mom Jeans concert and you can peep her crying in the front row :') birthing creds: @palmier95
