I had the privilege of being a guest artist today at the @anchoragemuseum’s Art of the North summer camp. Last week I worked with 7-9 year olds, today with the 10-12 year old group, considering how shape, color and composition come together to represent an artist’s emotional landscape. I asked young artists to make a list of all the emotions they’d experienced in the last 24 hours, then they manipulated fusible cloth on paper to convey these feelings. We emphasized working in a supportive artist environment, respecting others’ choices and caring for and sharing materials. I challenged them to make something I’d never seen before.
Please read this young artist’s long list of emotions..do not forget the deep feelings children harbor. Today’s work was raw and honest —I was really proud of these kids. We all saw things we’d never seen before, but could all completely relate to.
