We cannot reflect on childhood without reflecting on ourselves. Our Q&A this week after ‘May I Be Happy’ was honest, at times raw, and full of insights and practical, occasionally ‘ground-breaking’ tips (that flips on its head the ‘status quo’ behaviorism model of child-reading). Thoughtful questions from our audience made for a rich, deep conversation on what it means to bring mindfulness into schools, from overcoming inertia among teaching staff, how to empower teachers, how to equip parents to understand behavioural symptoms of a dysregulated nervous system (and thus, a brain that finds it difficult to learn). Thanks again to our panel Jaclyn Guest, Clinical Psychologist working with Synergetic Play Therapy, Deanne Ogden of @trinitykidsaustralia and Anna Glumac, Early Childhood Educator and Well-being facilitator with @smilingmind
If you’re in Geelong, Bellarine or the Surf Coast, join @suburbansandcastlesgeelong this Wednesday 21st November for this film and another incredible conversation to follow 🌱
It’s not often we make a point of making a ‘political stand’, recognising that there is no one ‘right way’ and that there’s space for all views and opinions. Having said that, we have strong values on health and wellness which are not being represented by anyone in government currently, so last night we invited @healthaustraliaparty along to share with our audience a bit about their vision and policies. Here I am with Candidate Ben Moore of @bensbeesau . As a beekeeper, his understanding of the immense value of bees means he sees the intrinsic connection between health and the environment; without bees to pollinate the vast majority of the world’s food crops, human existence is threatened. With this in mind, Ben acknowledges that health is undeniably the cornerstone to individual and societal success, which can only be fully realised through a genuine appreciation of the planet, its creatures and the wider human community.
If you’d like to know more about HAP and what they’re all about, listen to my interview with them on the @nourishingthemother podcast this week 🌱

If our difficult emotions were not purposeful for our growth and evolution as humans, they would have gone extinct. And yet still we try to disown parts of ourselves that we label ‘wrong’. The visceral reactions we have to our children’s behaviour tell us where our work is...but how do we move toward it, not away from it? How do we repattern our own reactionary behaviours to distract, shut down, or avoid? These are some questions we’ll be putting to the psychologists on our Q&A panels at ‘May I Be Happy’ in Parkdale tomorrow night, and Geelong next Wednesday 21st November 🌱

Who we surround ourselves with shapes who we become. So does what we read, listen to, and think about. And so I make it a conscious practice to choose my ‘teachers’ wisely. One of those, who I met through the Demartini Institute, is Lisa Dion, a Therapist who created a powerful modality called ‘Synergetic Play Therapy’, the first research-informed model of play therapy that blends together neuroscience, attachment, nervous system regulation, physics, mindfulness and authenticity. Earlier this year Lisa visited Australia for the conference on childhood trauma and I got to train with her in neurobiology in Parenting (which is essentially, that children set us up to feel what they feel - but I share more on over at @nourishingthemother ). I’m excited that Jaclyn Guest, Clinical Psychologist on our panel this week at ‘May I Be Happy’, is completing intensive training with Lisa in Synergetic Play Therapy and will have lots to share with us all! 🙏🏻

“We live in a society where we experience instant payment, same day deliveries, and Uber arrivals in the matter of minutes. Our expectation of ‘instant’ has become faster, and as a result, our patience is thinner. This makes mindfulness so extremely important, and, at the same time, something that we need to be aware will take some patience and continuity, to really feel the positive results. For the new generation, mindfulness is imperative in instilling self awareness in recognising the physical symptoms of an overloaded brain. Some level of anxiety is normal, however at many schools, we are seeing it to the point where students are finding it hard to switch off. Children's brains are under more stimulation than ever before, therefore both teachers and students must be practicing awareness and compassion for themselves and others.”
Join us at ‘May I Be Happy’ in Bayside Melbourne this Wednesday to hear Anna Glumac on the Q&A panel - one of the hot topics will be ‘how to add mindfulness to an already overloaded curriculum?!’ Which it turns out Anna is quite an expert in! 👌🏻🙏🏻
I love stepping outside in the garden feeling the fresh dew underfoot each morning, wondering what new harvest I’ll find in the veggie patch. It’s a potent reminder that what we nourish, grows. We can choose to water where we are planted, or plant ourselves somewhere else. There are no rules, only what we choose to live our lives by. The only sure thing is that we can’t avoid challenge, and whatever we run from, we run into again and again. The practice of mindfulness looks different for everyone; but what a promising future if we can give children the tools to stay connected to themselves in any situation, build resilience, and greater empathy for others. These are the themes explored in ‘May I Be Happy’ which kicks off this Wednesday in Bayside Melbourne - tickets via link in profile for this event and our Geelong event on Wednesday 21st November hosted by @suburbansandcastlesgeelong 🌱
Imagine if we learned this truth as a young child? Mindfulness. Self-awareness. How we project onto the world. ‘May I Be Happy’ explores the richness and reality of introducing mindfulness practice to children in schools, with a continuing conversation with our experts on the Q&A panel, Clinical Psychologist Jaclyn Guest, on child development, neurobiology and understanding and holding space for ‘big feelings’, and owner of @trinitykidsaustralia Deanne Ogden on why she created programs for schools and centres and the powerful change being made. Join us next Wednesday 14th November in Bayside Melbourne for an inspiring and thought-provoking evening for all parents and educators. And Geelong community - it’s your turn on the 21st November with @suburbansandcastlesgeelong and a panel featuring Jessica Cleary, Principal Psychologist and Director at @hopscotchandharmony and Tanya Motiani, Mindfulness Teacher of @mindnesting // all tickets via link in profile
