City of Miami Commissioner Ken Russell pledged to support the Miami-Dade County’s plan to build a 300-seat theater as the future home for @GableStage, soon to be @GroveStage. In a statement he posted on his Facebook page on Dec. 13, 2018, Comr. Russell said he would “not continue to fight until the playhouse dies from neglect. I will work together with the county to see that their plan becomes reality.”
Comr. Russell’s statement came after the Circuit Court Appellate Division ruled on Dec. 10, 2018 in favor of Miami-Dade County, overturning the City of Miami Commission’s earlier decision to adopt Comr. Russell’s resolution to reverse the historic preservation approval for the Playhouse revival project. Comr. Russell represents the district where the Playhouse is located.
Below is the full statement from Comr. Russell:
“I fought hard for the TOTAL restoration of the Coconut Grove Playhouse. I believe in the preservation of the front building and the theater. I upheld the appeal of the groveites who don’t want to see the back structure go away. The courts have decided otherwise and overruled my decision. I will not continue to fight until the playhouse dies from neglect. I will work together with the county to see that their plan becomes a reality. The Grove needs its playhouse to come back to life. We need the additional parking from the garage. It is not my first choice, but I will not be responsible for a protracted fight where nothing gets done. Onward….”
