Let’s talk Martini 🍸
Iconic enough to have its own glassware, the drink of Bond, James Bond, H. L. Mencken called the martini "the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet"
Depending on where you agree the drink originated from. Safe to say somewhere along the history lines of late 1800’s early 1900’s. @diffordsguide Has an in depth write up on its history.
Yet in my search to find a taste for this drink, I’m still not convinced. I’ve tried shaken and stirred and both Vodka and Gin, Dirty and Perfect.
I’m yet to find the right one. As my palate had moved onto spirit forward drinks, I was sure that I’d find the ideal style of the legendary martini to suit my taste. Not so much. Give me a Porn Star Martini any day.
This Martini was made using @jamieoliver ‘s recipe... 1 part Vermouth
5 parts Gin
Lemon twist (or Olives) to garnish.
Vermouth stirred with ice. Excess drained. Gin added and stirred for 30 seconds to dilute. Then strained into a chilled martini glass.
I was sure this would be ‘the one’
Is there a good recipe for me to try? What’s your favourite martini? •
The Vino range doesn’t compromise on style, and it’s both safe and durable.
Available in stemmed, taster and stemless varieties, Vino is elegant and pleasant to drink from. It’s also ideal for glass-free environments and occasions
Pop Top G&T
2 oz. Mediterranean gin (@deepcovecraft)
1/4 oz. spruce tip and juniper berry syrup
2 dashes Cascade Celery bitters (@bittered_sling)
4 oz. Mediterranean tonic water (@fevertreemixers)
I figured the appropriate way to finish off my bottle of Mediterranean gin from @deepcovecraft would be to enjoy it a gin and tonic which compliments its fragrant olive and rosemary notes. The Mediterranean tonic water, vegetal bitters, and touch of herbaceous syrup did just that. This gin was the first local craft spirit I purchased for my home bar, and would eventually lead me to discover the multitude of distillers and producers that we are fortunate enough to have here in British Columbia.
Also wanted to give a thanks to @tossware for letting me sample their newest release, the classic Can. It's definitely a fun and easy way to serve highballs and I'll be putting my set to good use as holiday parties start to come around. Oh, and you can also stack and lock them into ridiculously tall towers. Always fun. 👀

Patients, did you know that gin and tonics were once used as a cure for malaria? The quinine in the tonic water had medicinal properties, but to make it feel less bitter, doctor's mixed it with gin. Sounds like the perfect prescription to me!

Bulldog Gin // From the Collections: A blend of 12 botanicals sourced from all over the globe go into this London dry gin. Non-traditional ingredients such as white poppy (Turkey), lotus leaves (China), almonds (Spain) and dragon eye, also known as Longan, give the gin its complex flavour profile. This quadruple-distilled gin has notes of lavender, citrus and cinnamon that leaves a warm and delicate floral finish on the palate. We suggest enjoying it with Mediterranean tonic and rosemary for garnish. #atlasbarsg#ginitup

When you live in the suburbs you get excited about places that are close to home. I was even more excited when I found out @mardigraschillspot was serving up all my favorite creole and cajun food. They offer multiple Daiquiri machines with many flavors including this one called the Skittles. The Skittles is a combination of Blue Raspberry, Mango and Hurricane mixed together for the perfect swirl. The restaurant is painted in themed Mardi Gras murals with tables and high bar stools. They gumbo, Mississippi fries, seafood platters and poboys and more. If you’re in the area stop by. Swipe left to see more -
So I finished Sother Teague's I'm Just Here For The Drinks last weekend 😁 Long story short, it's a great book! The chapters on Amari cocktail and mixed libations (split-base cocktails) alone are worth it.
There are two interesting tidbits in there I wanted to try with this cocktail:
× Amaro Montenegro can replace lemon juice
× Genever and White rum work well together
As luck would have it, I have two new bottles to play with. Well, either luck or I just have too many bottles 😅 I'll stick to option A 😁
What are your favorite combinations in a cocktail?
1 oz Balegemse Jenever
1 oz Clairin Communal
3/4 oz Amaro Montenegro
1/2 oz Cherry Rocher Génépi
Dash Angostura Orange Bitters
Both of these spirits are insane, completely artisanal and both use wild fermentation. In the case of the genever, they are the last genever distillery in existence to do this. These guys even grow the grain themselves.
Clairin is Haitian white rum. It's funky, it's a flavour bomb and it's a bit weird. This one is a blend of four distilleries. It's also the most accessible of the Clairins I've tried.
Okay, hardly a traditional genever and white rum. But in my defense, I had new toys to play with 😋 And I did like the taste of it! Next time I might try to add a drop or three of lime, in the same vein of Ti Punch 🤔
So in case you were wondering about what the heck is on those baguette slices... Our second to last morning wanted to cook up what was left in the fridge, only a couple eggs, an avacado, 1/2 a baguette, Turkey bacon.... only wished I had some chives for garnish... but habanero hot sauce worked just as good... 😍🌶 However a side of sliced papaya, pears and prickly pear.... breakfast was sure good... need to go back 😏🗺✈🌴
Hop aboard Betsy McLeod and Jon Paupard’s (of @blackwateraffair) seafaring vessel for a tour that leads away from the frosty air to a little slice of paradise. And with their Ginger Grant punch flowing, why even stress about the remote possibility of a shipwreck?
The races are tomorrow! This month is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month so all of the race proceeds will go directly to the fantastic @pancan organization. So come out and grab a drink or three, cheer on your favorite turtle, and help us support this great cause. Cheers! 📸 by: @omfgitsmateo
