/ Ensor, James (1860-1949) - 1915 The Banquet of the Starved (Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC)
.
Belgian painter, printmaker and draughtsman. No single label adequately describes the visionary work produced by Ensor between 1880 and 1900, his most productive period. His pictures from that time have both Symbolist and Realist aspects, and in spite of his dismissal of the Impressionists as ‘superficial daubers’ he was profoundly concerned with the effects of light. His imagery and technical procedures anticipated the coloristic brilliance and violent impact of Fauvism and German Expressionism and the psychological fantasies of Surrealism. He was largely unrecognized before the 1920s in his own country. His work was highly influential in Germany, however, Emil Nolde visited him in 1911, and was influenced by his use of masks, Paul Klee mentions him admiringly in his diaries, Erich Heckel came to see him and painted his portrait. Marc Chagall and George Grosz also adapted certain elements from Ensor. All the artists of the Cobra group saw him as a master.

After the German army occupied Belgium at the start of World War One, Ensor painted this bitter parody of the Last Supper. Instead of a sumptuous paschal feast, the diners are sitting down to a table with just two raw carrots, an onion, and insects, in evocation of the horrible famine that overtook Belgium in the year Ensor completed the work. The diners are grabbing each other in poses that could be sexual or violent or both, while in the background hang three paintings in the painting, tableaux of skeletons, dancing or fighting.

Decided to check out the artwork at the Stedelijk Museum, an international museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design.
Armando (1929 - 2018)
Peinture Criminelle, 1957
- oil on panel

During his art history studies in Amsterdam, Armando became acquainted with art produced by the Cobra group. Armando adapted the spontaneous informality of the Cobra style, but his works were more abstract and had an aggressive character. This is underscored by the title of this piece: Peinture Criminelle. The ominous becomes apparent in Armando’s work, a threat of aggression and violence, but then dissolved in the medium of paint mixed with sand. His choice to use the colors, red, black and white in combination with the title establishes a charged meaning. For his contemporaries, not only did this evoke memories of the Second World War’s horrors but also apprehensive feelings about the nuclear arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Mogens Balle - Avant-garde artist of the CoBrA group "Mogens Balle (1921-1988) is an artist from Copenhagen. Mogens Balle began with a training in architecture and finished his studies in painting, in a private institution. His time in the French capital influenced his orientation towards Picasso's cubism and inaugurated a style in the artistic vein. In 1947, during the Spirale fair, he met Asger Jorn who invited him to join the Cobra group. His various inspirations include Ejler Bille, Egill Jacobsen, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Asger Jorn. Mogens Balle claims a breach from surrealistic-figurative painting and Danish surrealism, the aim of the Cobra movement. The entire inner notion is toned down. He shapes the abstract-surrealistic movement, celebrating material spontaneity, merging surrealistic automatism with abstract. Asger Jorn named their entity as "Danish experiment". Mogens Balle illustrated texts of Noiret, Harder and collaborated with Dotremont on word paintings. He signed twelve issues of the Helhesten magazine, ancestor of the Cobra magazine (mixing popular art, ethnology, cinema, photography and painting)." #paitings #avantgardenart #cobragroup #europeanart #abstractart #artistic #blog @expositionblog

He signed twelve issues of the Helhesten magazine, ancestor of the Cobra magazine (mixing popular art, ethnology, cinema, photography and painting)." #paitings #avantgardenart #cobragroup #abstractart #europeanart #artistic #blog #cuture @expositionblog

In December 1944, a group of painters, later to be known as the Cobra group decorated a Danish daycare on Østerbro for free (food). Constant and #Corneille joined in (his figure on photo) together with Asger Jorn, Carl Henning Petersen, Ejler Bille and others. The murals have now been almost fully restored and on special occasions you can see them by invite, like I did today. During the week, the house they are in still functions as daycare, so the 60 kids attending it get to play between art worth perhaps millions of dkr! #art #arthistory #mitkbh #sharingcph #cobragroup

È importante comprendere che la poesia non è soltanto qualcosa al di fuori dei bisogni essenziali della vita, ma che pane e vino sono poetici, che una casa è una poesia e una città è un ornamento, un prezioso gioiello. A. Jorn

Monster thanks to @creativethinkin aka renowned street artist Marc Craig👏who has weaved his magic on a group of banknotes to be included in our Cash is King book of defaced paper money. Marc is well known for his work on large scale public murals, including the Tate Gallery and the Banksy tunnel in Leake Street. His bold, colourful designs incorporating Mayan and Aboriginal imagery demonstate the influence of Basquiat, Keith Haring and the visually powerful Cobra Art Movement. His stunning and eye catching art is populated with monster-like characters, dinosaurs and aliens, so it is no surprise that he is in demand to work on projects involving schools and young people and is a great supporter of charities involving mental health groups through his collective psychododoodiz. We have this painted pound note in our Sound As A Pound pop show at the moment and-generous soul that he is-Marc has asked for any sale proceeds to be given to charity🙌 #marccraig #muralart #leakestreettunnel #banksy #streetart #streetarteverywhere #mayanart #aboriginalart #cobragroup #londonartist #cornwallartist #falmouth #doodleart #basquiat #keithharing #rebelnottaken #bobosborne #madinengland #carriereichardt #artistsoninstagram #markerpen #drawing #creativethinking #urbanart #graffiti #graffitiart

Karel Appel was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet. He started painting at the age of 14 and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Influenced by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Jean Dubuffet, he was one of the founder of the avant-garde movement CoBrA in 1948, together with Corneille, Asger Jorn and Christian Dotremont.
---
Their desire was to break away from existing art movements as "detested naturalism and sterile abstraction". Strong colors, handwriting, figuration which can be either frightening or humorous, and a childlike and spontaneous pleasure in painting were the main elements of CoBrA's expressions.
