Pieter Ouborg - CoBrA Avant Garde Movement

Pieter Ouborg (10 March 1893, Dordrecht - 3 June 1956, The Hague) was a Dutch artist. He started out in life as a teacher; this profession was threatened with interruption by the outbreak of World War I when Ouborg was liable to enlistment. He managed to evade military service by taking up a teaching position in the Dutch East Indies. While there, Ouborg took up drawing and painting. Returning to the Netherlands after the war, Ouborg found himself drawn to the work of Vincent van Gogh. In 1923 he began to experiment with painting in the Cubist style. In 1931, Ouborg visited Brussels and found himself drawn towards surrealism. During the World War II and its immediate aftermath, Ouborg was drawn increasingly into the circle of the COBRA (avant-garde movement) and its members such as Karel Appel and Corneille.

Selling one of my CoBrA = Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam #painting coming out of my own collection. I allways thought it was a "dog" or a "rooster". The work is signed and undated. Mist connoisseurs say it is late 1950s. The works dimensions are 60 x 30 cm. It is made of thick oil paint on board.

***Writer without Reader*** @yukngajiid @muslimahdakwahvisual @bkldknasional #majelisintelektualmahasiswa #fcmgroup #cobragroup #newbiephotographer #newwriter #coffeelover

/ Ensor, James (1860-1949) - 1915 The Banquet of the Starved (Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC)
.
Belgian painter, printmaker and draughtsman. No single label adequately describes the visionary work produced by Ensor between 1880 and 1900, his most productive period. His pictures from that time have both Symbolist and Realist aspects, and in spite of his dismissal of the Impressionists as ‘superficial daubers’ he was profoundly concerned with the effects of light. His imagery and technical procedures anticipated the coloristic brilliance and violent impact of Fauvism and German Expressionism and the psychological fantasies of Surrealism. He was largely unrecognized before the 1920s in his own country. His work was highly influential in Germany, however, Emil Nolde visited him in 1911, and was influenced by his use of masks, Paul Klee mentions him admiringly in his diaries, Erich Heckel came to see him and painted his portrait. Marc Chagall and George Grosz also adapted certain elements from Ensor. All the artists of the Cobra group saw him as a master.

After the German army occupied Belgium at the start of World War One, Ensor painted this bitter parody of the Last Supper. Instead of a sumptuous paschal feast, the diners are sitting down to a table with just two raw carrots, an onion, and insects, in evocation of the horrible famine that overtook Belgium in the year Ensor completed the work. The diners are grabbing each other in poses that could be sexual or violent or both, while in the background hang three paintings in the painting, tableaux of skeletons, dancing or fighting.

Decided to check out the artwork at the Stedelijk Museum, an international museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design.
Armando (1929 - 2018)
Peinture Criminelle, 1957
- oil on panel

During his art history studies in Amsterdam, Armando became acquainted with art produced by the Cobra group. Armando adapted the spontaneous informality of the Cobra style, but his works were more abstract and had an aggressive character. This is underscored by the title of this piece: Peinture Criminelle. The ominous becomes apparent in Armando’s work, a threat of aggression and violence, but then dissolved in the medium of paint mixed with sand. His choice to use the colors, red, black and white in combination with the title establishes a charged meaning. For his contemporaries, not only did this evoke memories of the Second World War’s horrors but also apprehensive feelings about the nuclear arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Mogens Balle - Avant-garde artist of the CoBrA group "Mogens Balle (1921-1988) is an artist from Copenhagen. Mogens Balle began with a training in architecture and finished his studies in painting, in a private institution. His time in the French capital influenced his orientation towards Picasso's cubism and inaugurated a style in the artistic vein. In 1947, during the Spirale fair, he met Asger Jorn who invited him to join the Cobra group. His various inspirations include Ejler Bille, Egill Jacobsen, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Asger Jorn. Mogens Balle claims a breach from surrealistic-figurative painting and Danish surrealism, the aim of the Cobra movement. The entire inner notion is toned down. He shapes the abstract-surrealistic movement, celebrating material spontaneity, merging surrealistic automatism with abstract. Asger Jorn named their entity as "Danish experiment". Mogens Balle illustrated texts of Noiret, Harder and collaborated with Dotremont on word paintings. He signed twelve issues of the Helhesten magazine, ancestor of the Cobra magazine (mixing popular art, ethnology, cinema, photography and painting)." #paitings #avantgardenart #cobragroup #europeanart #abstractart #artistic #blog @expositionblog
