I have a toddler attached to me most days and another little life in my belly, which makes it hard to fit in formal yoga classes or regular runs. I’m always striving to work in daily movement, and when I'm successful (note: not always!), it really works wonders for my mental clarity, sleep and stress. Recent studies show that, happily, every minute of activity you get throughout the day counts toward your exercise goals. A few tiny tricks I’ve picked up along the way to make those minutes count: planks during floor playtime; power-walking laps at the park; wall pushups at the playground; kegels in the car; stretches while folding laundry and squats while making dinner. It’s not a perfect science (and please, not all of this happens on a daily basis), but just being mindful about movement and thinking about it in bite-size chunks makes it way more likely to occur--and way less daunting than attempting a 3-mile run while pregnant and toting along a toddler who’s decidedly stroller-averse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In acute care settings is SO easy for medical professionals to react to “poor po intake” with a supplement such as Ensure or a medication to stimulate appetite. As a dietitian I will always advocate for determining the “why” behind inadequate intake and try food first. If we can provide a patient with different foods, different consistencies, different size portions, different meal or medication timing, different meal temperatures (you get the idea!) to improve intake, I’d much rather do the leg work to make that happen than quickly jump to a supplement. RDs are a very valuable component of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team for this very reason! (Note: There are DEFINITELY situations when food isn’t the entire answer and protein supplements are indicated. I will continue to offer and recommend them to patients when indicated BUT I’ll always try to find a solution first via food.)

The latest news states: Daily egg consumption may reduce cardiovascular disease. Having an egg a day could reduce risk of stroke by 26 percent. 
Eggs are a prominent source of dietary cholesterol, but they also contain high-quality protein, many vitamins and bioactive components such as phospholipids and carotenoids.

I was once a boy who dreamt at the possibility of an education but I always felt it was out of reach. With the support of incredible friends, family, and academic mentors I was able to achieve this dream. I walked out of my office job, slept in a garage, worked multiple jobs, rode a bike to school and work, sold my blood and bone marrow, moved 400 miles away from friends and family, and temporary displaced some of my biggest passions in life. Sweet Potato & Red Lentil Soup with Aubergine & Kale Topping
1 tbsp ghee, coconut oil or olive oil
1 large onion
2 garlic cloves
2 sweet potatoes
4 carrots
4 sprigs fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme
1 cup / 250 ml uncooked red lentils
4 cups / 1 liter water or stock
Salt and pepper, to taste

Aubergine & Kale Topping
1 tbsp ghee, coconut oil or olive oil
1 eggplant, chopped into 1 cm squares
4-5 stems kale 
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp ground cumin
sea salt & fresh ground pepper, to taste

Heat oil and sweat onion and garlic, then add the rest of the ingredients until the lentils are cooked Approx 25min. then puree until smooth

For the topping, heat oil and add all the ingredients and cook gently for 10 mins until kale is soft. Add to the top of the soup with some fresh thyme. #yum #vegetarian #vegan #nutrition #winterfood #soulfood #torquay #clinicalnutrition

My mid-afternoon snack today - homemade kale chips made with biodynamic kale from my CSA box and @go_raw sprouted pumpkin seeds! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ingredients:
1 bunch of kale
1 tsp olive oil
1/4 tsp sea salt
1 tbsp sprouted pumpkin seeds
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌱Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌱Wash kale and remove the tough stems.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌱Cut kale leaves into 2-3 inch pieces and lay on a baking sheet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌱Drizzle and toss with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. You could also add other toppings such as a dash of garlic powder or chipotle seasoning.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌱Bake for 10-15 minutes, until the kale is crispy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌱Transfer the kale chips to a serving dish and sprinkle with pumpkin seeds.

My research is done on comfortable linen sheets. Most will simply read “one liners” but for my Tom @platzinum and I, dissecting is my thing. We have come across “too numerous to count” miracle promising, fast working and cheap supplementation and when we do not respond after receiving?
