Quick mermaid sketch (didn't bother sculpting her whole tail). Got some clay to start playing with. It's been about ten years since I last did any sculpting. Feels good. ❤️ #sculpture#sculpting#clay#claysculpture#art
A remembrance post to honour and celebrate the achievements of radical French sculptor Auguste Rodin , whose death centenary was #onthisday 101 years ago.
Incredibly, he was largely self taught. Ancient Greek sculpture was an inspiration.
Highly criticised, because he broke away from the traditional, decorative, classical style, Rodin stuck to his guns, imbuing his sculptures with stark realism and celebrating the physicality of the human form. He challenged existing concepts of beauty in sculpture.
Seeing Michelangelo’s work during a trip to Italy inspired him anew, to work on a life size piece - The Age of Bronze(pic-5) which stirred controversy -it was so realistic that he was accused of cheating and casting it from a living man.
To prove himself, his subsequent sculptures were always smaller or larger than life.
Interesting though, that he never carved marble or cast bronze, always only worked on clay instead, wherein lay his genius. Marble/bronze versions were made by assistants in his workshop under his supervision.
At 40, he was commissioned to create a door for the entrance of a decorative arts museum. Though the museum was shelved, Rodin worked on his monumental work -The Gates of Hell-off and on for almost 4 decades till his death . Clearly a labour of love. Many of his world famous sculptures like The Thinker, The Kiss , The Prodigal Son were actually motifs from this impressive portal .
Rodin could make any part of the body speak of character or express emotion . For him, even his fragments or truncated figures without arms, legs or head , were equally sculptures, just by themselves , though regarded unfinished by critics .
Today he is considered the vanguard of modern sculpture.
