In the 16th century, animal-like smells like musk and civet were very popular ... In the 19th century, on the other hand, these animal odors were generally crude, and light floral fragrances were preferred
I’m not usually one to switch scents, but a very special evening with the folks to see @rufuswainwright’s All The Poses Tour calls for a very special perfume: @chris.rusak.perfume’s Quasi una absurdia. It’s a floral fragrance (rose, ylang ylang, and jasmine) in the classical style (aka, civet and tonka in the base) and—judging from *everything* I’ve smelled, at least—the modern heir apparent to @guerlain’s L’Heure Bleue. Q.u.a. smells a bit like L’Heure’s twilight, the after-hours haze it leaves on your clothes the morning after, the smell of last night’s dream. As knowing when’s enough is an art unto itself, it’s absurd how well balanced Quasi is, with each piece seamlessly blended into the whole, a sum already greater than its parts and enhanced by a clever mint note that lends a brisk, almost damp chill to this blue hour, a strange morning mist over this new dawn to the Guerlain’s bottled dusk. This mint—and Quasi una absurdia itself, really—is like a queering of perfume’s past, a way to swing open history’s closet doors and insist here we are, as we always were. It’s very difficult to keep the line between the past and the present, and so Quasi una absurdia moves me now precisely as Poses moved me then, when I was 18 and in the closet to everyone else about my attractions and without a word for trans or a clue as to the person I would and would want to be...though the pink hair probably gave a few things away. Quasi una absurdia is Poses is our art, how we tell our stories, how we safeguard our history, how we give hope to each other and light to a dark and uncertain future. It is the way we relate, and it is vital, and beautiful, because it is just as we are. #perfume#chrisrusak#quasiunaabsurdia#qua#rose#ylangylang#jasmine#tonka#civet#mint#classic#floral#modern#vintage#eaudeparfum#edp#fragrance#perfumecollection#perfumeaddict#wbw#waybackwednesday#rufuswainwright#poses#lgbtq#niche#nicheperfume#perfumenerd#indieperfume#onwednesdayswewearpink#pinkhair
Image & post from @endextinctionintl - THE DARK TRUTH ABOUT KOPI LUWAK
Civets play an important role in their native ecosystem food chains: they are food for large carnivores such as leopards and snakes, and they feed on insects, small reptiles and fruits. One food they’re particularly fond of, is coffee cherries (the fruit coffee beans come from). Civets are fussy about which coffee cherries they eat, only choosing the best. Their digestive enzymes remove some acidity from the beans, which are then only partially digested and excreted in their faeces. Around the mid-1800s, these excreted beans were found by local villagers to make smoother, more pleasant-tasting coffee.
At first, this discovery lead to collection of wild civet droppings, which actually encouraged the protection of the species. However as news traveled of this strange and delectable coffee, its popularity and demand increased, leading to the current captive trade.
Civets are now taken from the wild or bred in cages and fed a diet of nothing but coffee cherries. Not only does this deprive them of a balanced diet, but the conditions they are often kept in are inhumane. Wire cages with no protective floors or bedding, urine soaked and covered in faeces, dirty water and bowls full of coffee cherries have been found by investigators who also noted that many of the civets studied were either obese or underweight, unable to socialise with other civets, and in catches no bigger than a small rabbit hutch.
Studies also noted that due to the fact the civets were only given coffee cherries, they were unable to pick and choose which ones were best, meaning the products from their faeces were of inferior quality to that of wild-collected. Yet most kopi luwak is still sold under the label of “wild sourced”.
Before spending USD$80 on a single cup of Kopi Luwak, think twice about the source of the beans and what it means for the animals.

I feel so fortunate that someone wrote these words about Bohemia. When I read them, it conjures vivid images of the ancient land—Calgon take me away! Thanks for this mental escape @odedeparfum!!! 🖤
Well, I was not expecting *that* reaction. @houseofgrayfragrance Bohemia is described by @aveparfum founder Elizabeth Rose as a “modern vintage” meant to conjure the Old Bohemia (the historical region in the Czech Republic), not the New Bohemia (that freethinking, freewheeling lifestyle of creatives and bon vivants on a budget). What she and the @auphorie brothers have crafted is a recreation—geographically and historically—of a place and time so distant, smelling it quite brings about a great calm, like an olfactory unplugging from modern living. It’s described as a woody oriental, but I read it as an animalic chypre, a floral gauze like spiderwebs over rolling green earth, a dense and unending forest, smoky embers from a warm hearth, and the animalic smells of unknown fauna in the distance. Bohemia is observable, like the warm glow of a campfire seen through the trees, but exquisitely quiet to the point that it all but removes you, if you let it, far from the noise of urbanity and post-industrialism and late-capitalism. Is Bohemia an elegy for what we’ve lost in the past century and a half, or a reminder of another way of living still within reach? This Instagram ain’t called Answers, so I’m not sure, but Bohemia’s beauty most certainly made me weep. #perfume#houseofgray#auphorie#bohemia#floral#pine#cedar#smoke#earth#civet#woody#oriental#animalic#chypre#modern#vintage#eaudeparfum#edp fragrance #scentoftheday#sotd#perfumecollection#perfumeaddict#flashbackfriday#fbf#czech#pastoral#samples#niche#nicheperfume#indieperfume
