Quick view of one of our lighting set up from the short film, Room 4. Putting my Litemat 4 and 2L to work by creating a large wrapping light source around our lead actress and the guy who approaches her at the bar. The litemat 4 is diffused with full grid and the 2L with 1/4 grid. Both of them are put to full tungsten and then gelled with 1/4 CTS. Just off frame right of this photo is 2’x4’ bounce with a soft gold reflector and a source 4 lighting it up, dimmed about half way down for warmth.
The idea behind the soft gold reflector is to give greater specular highlights to their skin tone. While also giving some slight color contrast to the Litemats that are continuing that wrap of light. Progressively getting softer as it wraps around towards the fill side of camera. The last touch for the set up was an unbleached muslin floppy to kill any hard shadows from the bare bulb wall sconces. All the while giving a slight passive return of bounce light to the camera side of talent. Also very happy to have the camera on a tripod this time! Photo by Jessica Perez. .

Eva Walker of The Black Tones, 2018
Mural Amphitheater Seattle Center
Believe it or not this was the first time I’d ever shot an entire show on film. I’ve shot a few images here or there on film but I shot an entire 36 roll of expired Tri-X 400 for this really incredible show by The Black Tones. The conditions were perfect for shooting film, being outdoors with great light, however I learned some lessons about shooting action. First, I was shooting on a brand new lens I’d just picked up that day at an estate sale, a beautiful 105mm 2.5 Nikkor lens. This may seem obvious to some but I was using a non AI lens on my FE2 (luckily it wasn’t damaged) but I didn’t notice that the metering wasn’t accounting for the aperture so things were a little more underexposed than I’d like. Also I still hadn’t figured out how my motor drive works so… 1/3 of the way through I just threw that in my back pocket. Lastly manually focusing action is tough, and there were a lot of missed shots where I just couldn’t get Eva’s lively performance in focus in time. I might be a little biased, but The Black Tones are one of the best, most important, exciting, and promising bands to emerge in the last few years. They’re the type of band that must be experienced live to be fully experienced. •
