Today, we threw a surprise retirement party 🎉 for our very own Gerry (Gerard) De Abreu! He is retiring next week after 22 years of service at CIHI!
▫️
As an IT Support Technician in our Toronto office, his first job at CIHI was in the 📬 mail room. He took initiative to learn about Informational Technology 💻 and soon made a place for himself in our ‪#IT‬ department! 🙌
▫️
Gerry is known for his commitment to CIHI and colourful 🌴 Hawaiian 👕 shirts! He plans to travel during his retirement in a new RV with his wife, Sharon, whom he met at CIHI!
▫️
Our CEO David O'Toole and Jeff Levesque, manager, Information Security and Technology Services, presented Gerry with a recognition plaque for his hard work and dedicated service.
▫️
Happy Retirement, Gerry! 👍We will miss you!

Kia ora koutou katoa! (Greetings to all!) 👋
▫️
I am very privileged to have been part of the Home and Continuing Care (HCC) team at CIHI on a 1-year #secondment. In 🇳🇿 New Zealand, I work for a company called TAS, which is the national service provider for #interRAI in New Zealand — hence the link with CIHI and HCC.
▫️
My first reflection about CIHI and 🇨🇦 Canada is the wonderful, friendly people. Everywhere, Canadians have made me and my family feel very welcome. My second reflection is that Canada is very diverse — not 1 🏥health system to understand, but 13. Not 1 Indigenous population, but 3 (and many groups within that). Not just cold winters☃️ (which I expected) but very hot summers ☀️(which I did not expect).
▫️
I was excited to analyze caregiver distress data for Canada (and New Zealand), but I have also worked on data quality documents, an education course and a business case, and pulled together an inventory of #interRAI tools.
▫️
My time at CIHI and in Canada has been “sweet as.” I have made some great friends, grown as a person both professionally and personally, and extended my children’s horizons.
▫️
Noho ora mai (All the best)!🙌

12 years ago I worked at Health Canada, where I would hear about CIHI’s work with quality data and the reports that were published related to health care in Canada. After doing my research, I came to learn that @CIHI_ICIS was about to develop a health human resources database to capture record-level data on a number of health care professions in Canada. I knew I wanted to be part of a team that was innovative and was going to start something new!
▫️
CIHI is accepting of change, which helps keep the work going and keeps us relevant! I never feel bored in my job and there is always something new to learn.
▫️
CIHI is an excellent organization with a strong and relevant mandate and core values. The culture is engaging, accepting and respectful of all its employees. I really appreciate the work–life balance that is part of the CIHI culture.
▫️
I love working with the people. There are opportunities for recognition, as well as social committee events that allow a mix of work and play. As a result, I have a strong social network at CIHI and consider my team my “work family.” It’s incredibly rewarding to lead a team and watch them grow in their careers, while also growing in my own career. I hope to motivate others around me to see the big picture and the value of the work that we do everyday!

Analysis carried out by our team has demonstrated persistent health inequalities across low- and high-income neighbourhoods. In some cases, these health inequalities have widened over time.
▫️
We developed the Measuring Health Inequalities Toolkit to help analysts and researchers measure health inequalities in a consistent and standard way.
▫️
We are also developing free online learning courses to provide practical instructions and examples for applying the toolkit’s guidelines and resources. These courses will be available in winter 2019.
▫️
Consistent and routine monitoring and reporting of health inequalities across Canada is one of the measures of success, if you ask me. By identifying and monitoring differences in access to health care, as well as in the quality and outcomes of care, health systems will have greater insight into what steps they can take to improve health and health care delivery across the entire population. This would also facilitate learning across health systems.
▫️
Ideally, I hope that Canada’s health systems will make progress toward reducing inequities in health and health care access, quality and outcomes. To do so, health systems need to monitor and report health inequalities in a standard way. The Measuring Health Inequalities Toolkit will certainly help with this.

I started working at @CIHI_ICIS in 2017. My biggest fear on my first day at work was that my team in the Master Data Governance Office would realize they had hired the wrong person. What I didn’t expect was how genuinely kind everyone was! We decorate offices for birthdays, have TGIFs to watch the World Cup together and collaborate to pitch ideas in a hackathon-style 24-hour challenge. We work hard to stay committed to the core strengths of our organization.
◽️
The most rewarding aspect of my work has been updating CIHI’s Sex and Gender standards in the CIHI Reference Data Model Toolkit. Transgender populations have faced barriers to accessing quality health care. Through consultation sessions with patient populations, Statistics Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Canadian Population Health Initiative team at CIHI, we have included standards for Gender Identity, Lived Gender and Gender Diverse.
◽️
I’m an only child, so I grew up figuring things out on my own. My biggest takeaway from CIHI is the power of a strong team. When I look back at some of our initiatives, we started with a concept. We became each other’s sounding boards, we respected differences in opinions, we worked together to formulate a plan and we made sure to have fun along the way!
◽️
On a Saturday afternoon, you can find me mostly being made fun of by my friends. I am that person who will have a conversation with rideshare drivers and servers at restaurants, and I always say hi to TTC employees.

When my mom asks me what it is that I do, I say “we’re using data to save the world!”

What is most rewarding for me is hearing stories of how the health information we produce is helping to fill information gaps and making a difference in improving the health care Canadians receive.

I work at CIHI because of the impact of our work on our health systems here in Canada. Our work directly influences the health care Canadians receive, and I’m glad to be a part of it. We have a lot of really smart and passionate people working together to ensure our stakeholders have the information they need to make important decisions about health care. ▫️
We also have an excellent social committee at CIHI that provides opportunities for us to balance our work with #fun #social activities.

It is rewarding to see our data inform local decisions as well." ◽️ ◽️ — Paul Sajan, Manager, Monitoring of Shared Health Priorities, CIHI ◽️ ◽️ ◽️ #cihi  #cihiliving  #HumansOfCIHI  #cihilife  #toronto  #yyz  #on  #ontario  #ottawa  #yow  #victoria  #bc  #yyj  #montreal  #quebec  #yul #canada  #canadian  #canadahealth #healthdata  #healthcare  #health  #data
“I’ve been with #CIHI since 2003. Our work with #Cardiac Care quality indicators gives hospitals an opportunity to make things better within the hospital, as well as to learn from and collaborate with other hospitals. We receive feedback from #hospitals that they are using our reports to help in their #quality improvement efforts, and it’s very rewarding to hear that my work matters. I like working at @CIHI_ICIS because I feel proud to contribute to an organization that makes a #difference.”

“Although my educational background is in #political science, I developed strong SAS skills in my graduate work, as well as in my previous experience working for the County of Los Angeles. While at the County, I worked with a broad range of record-level data, including health data. My first assignment with #CIHI was analyzing #rehabilitation data with the National Rehabilitation Reporting System team. Part of my desire to move to #Canada was for its universal health care, which the U.S. doesn’t have. When I learned more of what CIHI is about and its mission, I wanted to be a part of it and help make improvements to the health care system for future generations. So, I gave up the #Hollywood life for better health care data! For the past 3 years, I have been working in a stakeholder capacity where I have more contact with clients, in terms of both providing data and holding educational #workshops and web courses/conferences. I am always fascinated with how our stakeholders use our #data in their work.” ~Farhad Mehrtash, Senior Analyst, Home and Continuing Care, @CIHI_ICIS

“During my Master of Public Health studies at Queen’s University, I heard a lot about CIHI and its work on health information in Canada. Having an interest in working with health data myself, I always wanted to work with CIHI in some capacity. After some contract work with the Public Health Agency of Canada, I secured an analyst role with the Rehabilitation and Mental Health team in 2015, and have been with CIHI since then! 😊 Along with my interest in health data, a big part of my motivation to work at CIHI has to do with applying this information to help improve health outcomes. I really enjoy the work–life balance CIHI offers, the amazing people I have had the pleasure of working with, and the variety of opportunities to improve my skill set and knowledge of health information in Canada. So far, I have learned about different areas of health reporting, including rehabilitation services and health workforce. In my new role, I hope to learn about home and continuing care reporting in Canada and to contribute to the ongoing work of improving access to home and continuing care for Canadians.”
