Sunday’s Time Capsule!
It was 1993, when swiss business man Oliver Ike, active in the furniture design business decided to give Marc Newson a call. He knew Newson from his work in furniture design, and the call would prove to be one of the Big Bang’s in watch design. Marc Newson was not unfamiliar with watch design, as he had already designed the Pod in 1986. At the time Newson was just 23 years old. The Pod was produced in just 100 pieces and had shown Newson the challenges of watch design.
Ike and Newson decided to design exclusive watches together, starting the brand Ikepod. In 1998 the Hemipode hit the market, it was nothing like existing watches at the time. At 44mm diameter it was far bigger than the conventional size at the time, which was 40mm at max. The case had an organic, UFO like shape with no lugs. There was no caseback, as the case was joined on the sides, to make it look like one piece. Revolutionary rubber strap design, that perfectly matched the case and is still one of the most comfortable ever made. The automatic movement is based on the Valjoux 7750, however in Newson’s quest for perfect symmetry, some changes have been made. A second time zone was added at the six o’clock position, which is operable by an of centre pusher. The futuristic look is enhanced by a small crystal showing the balance and Hemipode signed rotor.
But just how important was the design?
In the early 2000’s the standard size for watches quickly moved towards 44mm, coincidence?
Marc Newson was taken on board for the design of the Apple watch, coincidence?
The rubber strap design on the Apple watch is almost identical to this one, designed in 1996, coincidence?
Tony Fadell, one of the founding fathers of the IPod and a serious watch collector, is often wearing a Hemipode, it is even the picture attached to his Hodinkee Podcast, coincidence?
Currently a Kickstarter is held to produce the Hemipode again, coincidence?
The watch pictured above is our favorite version. The Hemipode was produced in 9999 pieces, and this is a very early serial number with the most beautiful panda dial configuration. And the best thing is, it is online now!
