A beautiful school trip to the top of #christtheredeemer with our students from Rocinha.
A huge thanks to our partners and friends from Saltley Academy in Birmingham, UK, for supporting us in this adventure!
The 709 meter high Mount Corcovado attracts nearly 2 million visitors per year, primarily to see the Christ the Redeemer statue, but the views of the city from the top of this mountain are a highlight by itself.
I’ve been really sick. I’ll spare you the boring story about collapsing at home, emergency calls to the nurse and endless blood tests and skip to the part where I’m coming to terms with it. The conversation in my head is, I admit, a familiar one. It goes something like this:
Me: I’m invincible. I can do whatever I want. And I want adventure. Fires on the beach, nudie swims, mountain climbing and long plane rides to exotic destinations where I will most definitely eat the street food.
My body: No you most certainly are not. You are a sensitive person with a vivid imagination and a frayed nervous system. You got a nasty intestinal bug from that Fiji trip, remember? You are *still* recovering from that. You have low blood pressure and are prone to fainting. You can’t even watch scary movies.
Me: Whatever. I’m going to be a super spy. No, a tribal linguist. No, a photojournalist. And I’ll also be a mother.
My body: It’s exhausting just listening to you. Please learn your limits. Get a cushy office job and a house with a security system like a normal person. Take regular breaks from the kids. And take up gentle afternoon jogging. That will be lovely.
Me: Never. By the way, I’m moving the whole family to a tropical island in the next three weeks. There is no child care, so... no rest for you. Come on, it’ll be fun.
My body: If you carry on like this I’m going to stage a rebellion. A lie in.
Me: Pfft. Mind over matter. I’ll make you do my bidding. Also, we are going camping on the weekend but don’t worry it isn’t crocodile season just yet.
My body: Veto. Going into shutdown mode. See how you like it if you can’t stand up for longer than 2 minutes.
Me: You are the worst.
I’m starting to consider that I’m not actually the person I think I am. And maybe that’s ok. (Photo from a short stop in Rio while on assignment in Brazil, 2012.)
📍Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Fact: This Holy structure called “Christ the Redeemer” is one of the Seven Wonders of The World. It is 30 meters tall and stands on a pedestal 8 meters high on Mount Corcovado.
An absolutely magnificent structure!
