Outlaw King is a 2018 history action film directed by David Mackenzie. It stars Chris Pine, Florence Pugh and Aaron-Taylor Johnson. The film is about the rebellion of Robert the Bruce against the cruel English empire that threatens to enslave Scotland.
So, this movie had all the potential in the world to be a sleeper hit for Netflix? It turns out it’s an enjoyable and brutal medieval flick, but it’s not quite enough to propel Netflix originals to the next level
ACTION: This film is easily one of the most impressive action-wise all year. It’s incredibly hard hitting and the gore holds nothing back. It gets hard to watch at points because of how gory it is, but that is a testament to how brutal the era truly was. Very impressive stunts and fight choreography all round.
PERFORMANCES: Chris Pine is good in this film and pulls off a convincing-enough Scottish accent, whilst Florence Pugh is arguably the scene-stealer. At such a young age, she pulled off her role so convicingly and with so much style and class worthy of a royal.
PACING: Whilst most film’s this year have been critiqued because they are too slow, this film finds itself being questioned because it’s too fast. There are so many moments that are rushed by at the speed of light and you truly don’t get to savor enough of the key moments that should have been given more time and care. The ending literally comes out of nowhere and it wraps up in a matter of seconds.
Worth it?: 3/5
SCORE: 7.0/10. #outlawking

This week's movie: Netflix's Outlaw King 👑
Period movies aren't everyone's cup of tea so if you're fan of bloody , medieval battles then this movie doesn't hold back on that. The movie focuses on the historical events surrounding the Scottish Lord's around the time of 1304. Chris Pine embodies our main guy, Robert the Bruce.
My only complaint is the inconsistent pace of the movie. At times where necessary it speeds through important scenes and slows down on scenes that could have been a little quicker.
All in all a good attempt at a different genre by Netflix.
Outlaw King 2018

7.9/10. Tough one to rate. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. Chris Pine was fantastic, to pull off a consistent Scottish accent can't be easy and he did it really well. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What let me down slightly about his character was his authority. It wasn't quite clear to me why people followed him. And that was part of the reason I wasn't too happy about the first half of the film. It was disjointed. It was patchy. Relationships were thrown together. You really had no idea who characters were apart from the King and his son, who I thought was a pretty decent character. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The action sequences were great. It was definitely gruesome and that was necessary to portray the brutality of the times. Being a true story also helps things and tying in William Wallace was pretty cool. But this is no Brave Heart and far from it. It is a wannabe Brave Heart. It lacked solid characters and established relationships. | NETFLIX | #outlawking
