A favorite exercise of mine: The One Arm Dumbbell Upright Row with External Rotation into Overhead Press.
A mouthful? Sure. But the benefit to this exercise is that it takes a common exercise, the upright row, and makes it safer on the shoulder joint by adding the external rotation portion.
For someone with joint issues like me, that’s really important. But for anyone in general, shoulders can be tricky. They are so easily injured, often when a person uses his or her ego to lift heavier weights than he/she should on shoulder exercises.
Here, I’m not using particularly heavy weights for this exercise because of the external rotation component. But for those people who like overhead pressing, you know how over time, heavy weights can really wear away at your shoulders/elbows/other joints. So this is safer for that as well.
Give this one a try as it’s a way to hit all three heads of the shoulder without potentially putting your joints at risk! It also strengthens the rotator cuff and scapular muscles, further securing your shoulder’s safety over time.
