Bring me logs for the hearth fire that will keep me warm. Show up with your arms filled, and I don’t care if you chopped them up yourself, if your arms are tired and you still feel traces of the sweat that ran in rivulets down your back as you labored to show you could love me like that. Maybe you bought it from the store or picked them up on a walk through the woods. It only matters that I’ve been cold for too long, and you didn’t want to show up empty-handed.

To my NON DUTCH followers; do you think it's okay to dress up like this? This character is called "zwarte piet", which translates to "black pete". 🎁
It is part of the annual "sinterklaas" holiday.
The story is that there is this saint (he looks a bit like Santa) who has thousands of helpers who are "black petes". Every year they come to the Netherlands from Spain by boat to give presents to children, usually by going up rooftops and climbing down chimneys. That also explains why they are black (according to the story).
The black petes usually do all this work. Sinterklaas (the old saint Santa lookalike) tells the black petes what to do and gives them compliments when they do a good job.
Usually the black petes are very funny, generous, dumb and silly, and sinterklaas has to talk some sense into them ("No, black pete, Johnny gets 4 presents. Now you're holding 1. 2. 3. presents. Silly pete, ha-ha-ha")
Children love both sinterklaas and black pete. Although black pete can be seen as scary, since there is this story that he can hit you with a faggot (not a gay guy haha) and take you to Spain in a burlap sack. 🎁
There are huge discussions going on every year on whether or not its appropriate to dress up as black pete. There are actual riots in the streets, with people protesting against black pete, people protesting against those people, and actual neo-nazis telling the anti black pete people to "fuck off where they came from, you motherf**** filthy n*****", while giving the "heil Hitler" sign. 🎁
The group against black pete is growing every year, but there is still a huge group (the majority of people) who think black pete is an important part of our Dutch tradition and is something that should not be altered or banned. 🎁
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS?
I really really want to get an outsiders perspective on this. Thank you! 🎁 -
We had a trip up the scaffolding today. Not great for me getting up there given I’m pretty scared of heights, but these two loonies dragged me up anyway. My legs were like jelly the whole time but it was actually pretty fun and cool to see the before shot (which actually is pretty bad). It helped that it was such a nice mild day, I feel for anyone who has to do that in wind and rain! The chimney is getting taken down this week and having to be completely rebuilt as it’s been battered by the elements over the years and is pretty unstable.
Cons of buying a property 100+ years old, unexpected jobs you didn’t budget for.
The whole floor had to be ripped up as joists were rotting causing the floors to be wonky, creaky and impossible to lay any type of floor on top. (Advice when viewing a property, pay attention to the things you can’t see at first glance, they may be a big expense in the future i.e WONKY FLOORS 🙄)
(2nd picture still not finished) We did this ourselves as I want to try my best not to increase the budget- it was time consuming and heavy work (for my dad 🙊) but now at least we know we have lovely brand new and even joists that will last this property years. All signed off by the building inspector ✅

The old dated kitchen. On the left, a long narrow corridor leading to the back garden and behind the kitchen wall (+ HUGE chimney stack) was the master bedroom, which also had doors leading to the garden. So much wasted space and a pointless sealed chimney stealing all the room.
To TA-DA 🙌🏽 open plan kitchen/new lounge area, heightened ceilings and amazing unobstructed 8m expanse of windows with partial sea views.
The Master bedroom has now been relocated to the front of the house (the old lounge)
We had an architect and structural engineer survey to determine which walls were load bearing, resulting in 4 steels installed to create a structurally sound new living space. Our builders did this job so perfectly! If anyone needs recommendations for architect/structural engineer/builders in Essex I can pass on info
Snug update... I love looking back on the progress we made in this room. Originally the living room, with original fireplace we knocked out the chimney to create more room for our corner sofa.
Anyone else design a room around furniture you already owned !? Photos of the other part of this room to follow you'll see what I mean. We specifically designed the windows around the sofa too!
