#tbt to #ChicChicago and that lovely #silver thread #wig . I found these photos from a later time period when I was making a storage mount for the wig. Normally, wigs are stored in a nice box out of direct light and heat. Due to the nature of this one, a mount was needed to create a supportive structure to keep it from creasing or the net cap from pulling apart. The core is made of an inert foam, then wrapped in polyester batting, and finally covered in undyed/unbleached cotton muslin. It was then attached to archival blue board for upright storage. Once the wig was secured on the mount, it was then covered with #silvercloth (seen in the last photo) to help prevent against tarnishing. This piece will now hopefully last another 100 years for many more to enjoy! #fashiondesign #chicagohistorymuseum #wig #grandmaputyourwigbackon #fashionhistory #costumehistory #costume #shiny #fingerwave #braids #princessleia #flapper #1920sfashion

The Food: My all-Italian meal was going perfectly so far. So how could I not get dessert! I chose the Vanilla bean pana cotta with figs, fig compote, sorbet, pistacchios, and some mystery citrus fruit (query blood orange?) This was one of the most unique (and delicious) desserts I have had the pleasure of trying. The pana cotta had the texutre down. The figs, sorbet, and pistacchios created strong wind gusts 💨, and then finally the subtle citus accents just made the whole thing into a tornado of flavor! 🌪This was once again, a true work of art. Just when I thought the dessert was too liquidy, the provided cookie brought the perfect amount of bite and crunch. It was as if every aspect of the dish was thought out well in advance. Only piece of criticism: the ratio of pana cotta to other ingredients was a tad bit excessive (and it started to feel heavy in the last few bites)

The Food: Started with smoked fish rillettes and polenta. Let me tell you: this took me on quite the joy ride! The blocks of polenta had crisp walls that happily gave way to further warm and moist polenta inside. It was like biting through the hard shell of a savoury chocolate bar, to get to the soft caramel inside... Then there was the rillettes: fatty blob of smoky richness and goodness! The dried cherry tomatoes and pickled onions put forth a show of solidarity with the main components, but the capers (those little bombs of flavor!) dove in like the Kamikaze, and finished it off with a bang. Now rinse and repeat in every bite!

The Setting: The fact that I am posting a bokeh of a random street should be telling... You can’t really see it well but Monteverde is located at the corner of a relatively quiet street (by downtown Chicago standards) I really wanted the setting to be less random and boring... Stepping inside, it felt crowded and cramped (though I’m sure some would appreciate the hip vibes). I’m also not a fan of dark lighting, as the pictures dont turn out so great (as you will see next)

Not everything we looked through during the initial planning stages of #ChicChicago had to do with the exhibit or even another exhibit that was being planned concurrently. #LucienLelong was a #French #couturier that was the owner of a textile shop and trained at the #HautesEtudesdeCommerciales in #Paris after which he opened his own shop in 1910. Though he never actually made any of his #designs , Lelong worked through his designers to create his fashions. This #green #silk #velvet #gown is #biascut with an open #drapeneckline in both the front and back. Worn by a young lady to her social debut, this piece though not especially interesting is a great example of couture #sewing and design. Anyone here know what a debut is? While I cannot remember the designer of the two piece dress in the foreground, I believe the #coat in the background is a #NormanNorell but I cannot recall the date. Venturing a guess, I’d say roughly late 1940’s. The #dress is ca. 1930’s. I think. Funny thing about playing with so many pieces over the years and especially during the culling process of #ChicChicago it’s fortunate I even remember these pieces at all! #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #satin #silk #drape #embroidery #wool

Another mini that debuted in #ChicChicago was for the #CharlesJames #Butterfly #gown . James is only now getting the real attention he deserved in life for his revolutionary designs. Using shapes and not sizes for his #designs set him apart from other fashion designers. Deigning to be called a fashion designer, he was an artiste that brought classically #millinery #construction techniques to gowns which awarded him the title #ArchitectofFashion . Describing elements of his creations using architectural terminology certainly aided in his earning of the moniker. I’ll be making future posts describing James and his work once I get to that set of working photos! #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #organza #eleganza #muslin #tulle #quarterscale #sorryitsblurry

Yay for #minis ! #ChicChicago added to its educational aspect two minis of gowns on display. The first up, a #gown worn by Mrs. Cyrus Hall McCormick. The #ChicagoHistoryMuseum has both gown and almost a full life size portrait of Mrs McCormick wearing this same gown. Anyone know the significance of the Hall-McCormicks? In the mini, the many layers worn were #replicated to show everyone what was underneath it all. Each layer was labeled and a placard explaining the layers was beside it. @katie_builds created this lovely which was dubbed “Belinda” #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #design #lace #cotton #muslin #solittle

While working on #ChicChicago another exhibit was taking shape. #CatholicChicago was an exhibit that explored #Catholicism and its impact on #Chicago . Included: #costume pieces, such as the above #christening gowns . Would you believe that most of these were unisex? They were. In fact, these #christeninggowns were family heirlooms that passed down from child to child, generation to generation. Most times, these #gowns were #commissioned or #homemade . Now THIS is pretty #awesome ! Has anyone ever seen a #silverthread #braided #wig ? Neither had I until this one. C. #1920 this wig would have been worn to special functions; maybe a #speakeasy or #jazzclub during the #prohibition years. This piece could have been made for two reasons, the woman didn’t wish to cut her #hair but still wanted the #fashionable #fingerwave or maybe she just wanted to #standout . Well into the #19thcentury some #eveninggowns still took on a flare of the #18thcentury . This #gown while appearing from the previous century, is from around 1890. Notice how the #bodice isn’t as rigid with #boning and the #skirt is decidedly more #bustled with a #train trailing behind. Made in #yellow and #white #satin this #dress was meant to be seen! An interesting detail is on the back of the bodice. The hems of the center back panels are joined and twisted giving a glance of the white satin #facing while creating a fun play with the dual colors of the gown. Little #bows are used to give interest at the crooks of the elbows, along the skirt and center back. Where do you think the young lady who owned this wore it? Well into the #19thcentury  some #eveninggowns  still took on a flare of the #18thcentury  . This #gown  while appearing from the previous century, is from around 1890. Notice how the #bodice  isn’t as rigid with #boning  and the #skirt  is decidedly more #bustled  with a #train  trailing behind. Made in #yellow  and #white  #satin  this #dress  was meant to be seen! An interesting detail is on the back of the bodice. Holy #circus nightmare, Batman! At first glance this #ZandraRhodes #gown from #1985 has pretty much everything included the #circustent . #Bright #orange #red and touches of #turquoise make this gown or rather modified #silktaffeta #caftan really stand out! Notice under the #pleated #frilly #collar the delicately #beaded #bow which is also repeated throughout the dress. My favorite part of this #gown isn’t the #construction or the #design but the lingering scent of #perfume from the woman who last wore the dress. Many times when working with #historicalgarments the best smell you get is stale body odor or degrading textile fibers so this was definitely a welcome alternative! What influences would you say make up this gown? By the way, #dontmindthedorkbeingadork . #Iwasonceyoungandstupid #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #Womensfashion #schlappimannequin #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #ChicChicago

#brightcolors and #handpainted #fabrics are the hallmarks of #designer #ZandraRhodes . Her designs are creative statements that are dramatic yet graceful, audacious but feminine. Rhodes takes inspiration from her travels and translates them onto her #textiles . This #1979 #black #silk #organza and #satin #eveningdress pictured here has two distinct influences: #Japanese and #NativeAmerican . The organza #sleeves are made in the shape of a rectangular #pagoda and the belt modeled after an #obibelt . Take a look at the #ghostlywhite #paint that covers the sleeves and skirt hem. You’ll see a #zigzag pattern with a #desert #plant inset. Would you like to know how the sleeves were made to look like a pagoda? Nothing is more #fashionablyclassic as this #trapeze #gown designed by #yvesstlaurent for #dior in #1958 . His first solo line after #ChristianDior passed away, the look was a welcome departure from Dior’s classic #silhouette of a #cinchedwaist and #flaredskirts . Freeing the waist and creating a more fluid silhouette, St. Laurent changed the course of fashion. This gown of #black #mohair was shown in #ChicChicago with two other gowns from that line each a little different. Jean-Charles de #Castelbajac has a very unique way of approaching #fashiondesign as you can see in this photo. A #jacket made of #plush #teddybears looks like a child’s story gone awry! Both #whimsical and #odd , this is not your normal jacket. While this one is #multicolored many of his other iterations of this coat are natural colored. I guess that’s one way to keep your childhood close by or at the very least recycle it. This cost was only suggested for inclusion into #ChicChicago and certainly would have added a whole other level to the story had it been chosen. #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #Womensfashion #historicalgarments #schlappimannequin #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #onedayoureinandthenextyoureout #keepitweird

I’m sure everyone knows of THE #GabrielChanel ? Who doesn’t?! #CocoChanel gave us not only the #skirtsuit made famous by #FirstLadyJackieKennedy but also the #fabricdesign that it was made in. #Chanel5 is still one of the most recognizable and popular #parfume scents across the globe and her widespread fashion knowledge is legendary #beforeyouleavehometakeonepieceoff . #MadeleineVionnet is considered by most one of the most prolific #designers in #fashion with a lifelong passion of #fashioninnovation . She is credited as the inventor of the #bias cut used in fashion design. All of her designs contained some form of #drape that would #hugcurves on women and create the most #feminine and #sensual looks. Little known to the general public, Vionnet would design her pieces on #halfscale #dressforms and then have her team grade them to full size. One of my favorite photos of her contains her design process including a halfscale dressform and her looking aspirationally and scrutinizingly. In these photos of this #cream #silk #crepe #lingere you can see how well the piece seems to fit the #mannequin perfectly! The secret is the bias cut gown that has an inherent #stretch built into the design. It can fit up to a size or two larger and even a size smaller! Would y’all like to learn more about the different #grainlines and how they affect #garmentdesign and #fit ? Heavy but also slinky, shiny and studded with #rhinestones  and trimmed with satin, this #gown  was a sight to be seen. Two center #broaches  in the shaped of a mirrored “V” pull the plunging neckline in to gathers in the center front and #kimonosleeves  add a luxurious #drape  and weight to the piece. Versace was known to draw upon #AncientGreek  designs for his garments, can you see it too? #fashionhistory  #fashiondesign  #Womensfashion  #historicalgarments  #schlappimannequin  #ChicChicago  #behindthescenes  #heavymetal  #whoworeitbetter  #jennyfromtheblock  #bulletproof
Continuing with the #LibertyofLondon #eveningcape splendor, take a look at this fabulous #vibrant #silk beauty! The construction is much simpler than the gold silk cape but there are still some very beautiful details to find. #paintedsilk with an array of rich #colors that still looks freshly done despite the age of this garment from ca. 1920. The #multicolored #tassels bring a fun #designelement that helps play with the #drape of the cape. The shoulders are seamed together using a technique called #faggoting Typically, used as a decorative joining of fabrics, it’s also fairly strong. On this cape, it’s dual colored, orange and blue. I’m sure many of you have seen in current retail stores labels with #LibertyofLondon. Few know that this company is over 100 years old! What first started as a store selling #fabric #ornaments #objetsdart from Japan, Liberty opened in 1875 and is still rockin’ bold and vibrant #fabricdesigns This photo is of a #gold #satin #eveningcape ca.1910. One brilliant aspect of #fashionconstruction for this cape is the fact that it’s simply put, a rectangle! Granted, some shaping was done around the neckline to incorporate the #embroidered #yoke Notice the #tassels and their #bead like details. #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #Womensfashion #historicalgarments #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #ChicChicago #behindthescenes

Another #MarianoFortuny gown that didn’t make it into the exhibit but was under consideration. A beautiful #rustorange #silk #velvet with #goldandsilver printing. This gown was made roughly in the early to mid 1920’s in the manner of an #Italianrenaissance replete with #florals #gryphons #peacocks What you don’t see is the #handpainted #ItalianGlassBeads on the shoulders, the fitted sleeves, and otherwise tubular fit of the body reminiscent of a #tabard . There is a blue velvet jacket that accompanied the piece with gold and silver printing matching the dress but unfortunately I did not get a photo. #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #Womensfashion #historicalgarments #schlappimannequin #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #ChicChicago #behindthescenes #couture #artdeco

Furthering my trip down #memorylane I have some #MarianoFortuny gowns dubbed the #Delphos gowns. Originally, created in 1907, they continued production until his death in 1949. Made of #silk that was chemically #pleated Fortuny took his process to the grave. Whenever the gowns needed re-pleating, clients would have to send the gown back to the design house. The preferred storage method? Twisted gently and curled into a ball! These pieces made it into the show but were displayed curled up. The #champagne silk was dressed with the sheer jacket.

What you are looking at here is a few photos of different gowns worn by different women in #chicago . One item unseen in great detail is the #handpaintedbeading on the blue delphos. #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #silk #Womensfashion #historicalgarments #schlappimannequin #ChicagoHistoryMuseum #ChicChicago #behindthescenes #couture #greekfashion #somanypleats

One of the first exhibits I worked on while at the #ChicagoHistoryMuseum is #ChicChicago. Starting at #TheMuseumatFIT during a lull, it made its way back to #chicago in a BIG way! So many wonderful pieces to see and explore, I have a couple of behind the scenes photos of pieces that were both in the exhibit and a few that weren’t. Sorry for the lack of focus on some, these were taken on my old #kodakeasyshare digital camera waaaaayyyyy before cameras were made into phones.
The first look is this fabulous hot pink satin with neon yellow floral #flocking by #Balenciaga. Made in the mid sixties, it’s certainly an eye opener! The #sheathdress is beautifully draped and made to look like a #wrapdress with the addition of the #snapclosure overlay panel on the proper left side. What #floral pattern would you say is represented here? #fashionhistory #fashiondesign #satin #Womensfashion #historicalgarments #schlappimannequins

@jesskingfitness was a great sport one afternoon + modeled so many pieces of jewelry... THANK YOU!! She is wearing one of my favorites ...late 1950s bracelet with so much style. It is so lightweight - perfect for any season. Very unusual because of the lovely surface texture.

Jewelry can be dated, yet it can be worn by anyone which cannot be said about clothes. When was the last time you saw a tube top walking down the street on someone born before 1980? They are few and far between. However, jewelry hides it's age so very well and rarely draws negative attention to itself. Overall, jewelry draws positive attention and can be a conversation starter of sorts. Challenge - check out the jewelry worn around you ....it is an enhancement rather than an annoyance to the eyes.
