John King Fisher was my great uncle (3 x’s). I’m not the only family member who has a Wikipedia page. He was a notorious outlaw with an interesting life story.
As I prepare to exhibit my works of art in New York, I find myself reminiscent of the people throughout my life, who have shaped me. My work is highly personal in nature. The family members, friends, acquaintances and the places I’ve loved have all contributed to my artistic vision. It is my hope that viewers of my works will identify with the pain, complexity and love that flows through each offering. :

A true multidisciplinary artist, Etel Adnan works with painting, drawing, tapestry, film, ceramics, and even writing. This abstract composition makes intelligent use of color and light to depict a landscape. I love how she reduces the composition to minimal and elegant shapes. I wonder how the landscape looks like in real life....any guesses? Is it a real view or an exercise of freedom? On view through Aug. 3. I highly recommend stopping by this amazing show whose title (Of the Self and of the Other) was named after one of Adnan's poem! Now I want to get acquaintanced by her poetry! .
Eu me pergunto como é a paisagem real .... algum palpite? Agora quero me familiarizar com a poesia dela!
Loved seeing Brazilian Ione Saldanha in this show that also features Libanese-born Etel Adnan and American Carolee Schnemann. Different artists, same aspiration: to seek freedom from the canvas, to expand the painting from two to three dimensions. Here's the painted spool "Bobinas" side by side with a bidimensional paiting. Great show! On view through Aug. 3. .
American Carolee Schnemann is best known as a pioneer of feminist performance art, but her early paintings, to me, are crucial to what came next. They show the artist's longing to bring the canvas to life. Amazing to see how she was cutting-edge at her beginning and keeps evolving. I met her in person at the Lelong Gallery and was delighted: she is as inspiring as her paintings! .
It would be difficult to list all of the things we love about @masterpiecelondon. Near the top of that list, however, would absolutely be the amazing art you can see from all disciplines, and from galleries all over the world. (We really can’t help ourselves, so we’ll be posting about a couple of those pieces throughout next week.)
First on the list has to be Antoni Tàpies’ massive, powerful “Díptic negre amb creus”, exhibited by Galeria Mayoral. This painting, completed in 1988, served as a vision of the thousands of people who crossed the Berlin Wall to escape East Germany, and those who died in pursuit of freedom before it fell in 1989. We learned the history from the fantastic gallerists at @galeriamayoral - the backstory wasn’t immediately evident from just looking at the piece - so be sure to ask about it when you’re perusing Masterpiece this year.
