Rex Voisey had been on the water for about half an hour near Makkovik, N.L., when he spotted this pod of orcas.
•
Standing on the deck of his 22-foot boat, he captured these photos of the creatures playfully dipping in and out of the water.
•
In total, he says there must have been about 12 of them.
•
Orcas are known to turn up in that area every so often, and Voisey says over the years, he's spotted them swimming there four times.

It’s not unusual to see Queen Bey on the cover of a magazine. But what is unusual: this September marks the first time ever, prominent and influential black women are gracing many of the world’s top fashion publications at the same time.
•
There’s Beyoncé on Vogue (taken by African-American photographer Tyler Mitchell). Then there’s superstar Rihanna on British Vogue; Zendaya on Marie Claire; Lupita Nyong'o on Porter and Tiffany Haddish on Glamour, to name a few. (You can swipe through and see some of the covers.)
•
Here at home, Elle Canada’s September issue features a smiling Tracee Ellis Ross.
•
If you’re wondering, the September issue is traditionally the most important of the fashion calendar. It signifies a fresh start after summer, and an opportunity to set new trends. So it’s particularly significant to see so many black faces sweeping newsstands this month.
•
"When I first started, 21 years ago,” Beyoncé explains in her Vogue editorial, “I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell. Clearly that has been proven a myth."
•
Canadian model Lana Ogilvie has also been on her share of covers.
•
She was the first black model to sign an exclusive contract with CoverGirl. That was in the 1990s. Ogilvie says while September is cause for celebration there's still a long way to go.
•
“The diversity, the change is beautiful, it's glorious,” she told CBC News. “But there's a lot more to diversity than black and white. Why are there not more Latino women on the cover? Or Asian women?”
•

In the summer months, many First Nations groups across Canada come together to host festive social gatherings known as powwows.
•
Each one is unique, but typically powwows feature traditional singing and dancing and other kinds of cultural performance, as well as a dance competition.
•
Aside from being a social occasion, powwows are significant in that they help to promote First Nations history and culture and to encourage community and inter-generational bonding.
•
"Powwow to me is a time when families get together and share the teachings and culture and have a good time," says Gilbert Sark of Lennox Island First Nation, a Mi'kmaq reserve in Prince Edward Island.
•
Pictured here are different powwow events that were held this summer in New Brunswick.

A woman waits inside her home immersed in flood waters in the southwest Indian state of Kerala.
•
She’s just one of hundreds of thousands of people impacted by some of the worst monsoon season in nearly a century. Flooding and landslides have killed at least 324 people in the southwest state following eight days of heavy monsoon rains. More than 223,000 have been displaced and rescue crews are in a race against time as the waters — already up to two storeys deep in places — continue to rise.
•
"We're witnessing something that has never happened before in the history of Kerala," Pinarayi Vijayan, the state's chief minister, told reporters today. "Almost all dams are now opened. Most of our water treatment plants are submerged. Motors are damaged."
•
Hundreds of Indian military personnel are engaged in rescue operations, with helicopters plucking people off of rooftops and more than 500 boats cruising through flooded neighbourhoods. Local fishermen have also joined the efforts to ferry trapped people to safety.
•
Roads and railways have been severely damaged and the main international airport in Kochi is submerged and will remain closed until at least Aug. 26. The flooding has also destroyed crops in the fields, and there are worries that tourism — a major part of Kerala's economy — will suffer, even after the waters recede.
•
Countrywide, more than 930 people have died since India's monsoon season began in June. But Kerala has been the hardest-hit state, with the rain running 40 to 80 per cent above summer averages.
•
The big fear now is that overflowing reservoirs may give way, sending tidal waves down the state's 41 rivers.
•
The government has opened 1,568 relief camps to provide shelter to displaced residents and more than 1 million emergency food packets have already been distributed. Three trains filled with drinking water are due to arrive soon.

All that glitters at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition is edible gold. •
Some of the wackier treats this year include an ice cream bar topped with gold leaf and a $100 burger complete with a golden bun. •
Those looking for something with a little less glitter could try a s'more fried chicken sandwich, a Thrilla in Manila ramen burger, or pickle ice cream.
•
But an ongoing labour dispute between the board that oversees the exhibition grounds and unionized stagehands has taken some of the shine off the event. •
The stagehands have been locked out since July 20 and have set up picket lines outside the grounds. •

To mark the 50th birthday of the Boler trailer, pictured here in these photos, Boler owners from all over the country are making their way to Red River Exhibition Park on the western outskirts of Winnipeg, where an anniversary celebration is being held from Aug. 15 to 19.
•
The event will feature live music, a beer and wine garden, a merchandise shop, workshops, food trucks, yoga sessions, ukulele lessons, a scavenger hunt and a showcase of contemporary trailers inspired by the Boler, including one produced on a 3D-printer.
•
The egg-shaped fiberglass trailers haven't been manufactured in 30 years, but their popularity continues to endure with an estimated 1,000 enthusiasts and 500 trailers from across the continent expected to attend, according Ian Giles, one of the event organizers.
•
He says the simplicity of the trailers — how easily they can be set up and moved around — is one key to their appeal, as is their distinct appearance.
•
"First and foremost I think it's the cute factor. They're so recognizable, these little round eggs on wheels," he says.
•
"I quite often comment that they're blank canvases when someone first gets them, and people go crazy decorating them."

Defence attorneys walk to federal court as jury deliberations begin in the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who prosecutors say earned $60 million advising Russia-backed politicians in Ukraine, hid much of it from the IRS and then lied to banks to get loans when the money dried up.
.
Defense attorney Richard Westling noted that Manafort employed a team of accountants, bookkeepers and tax preparers, a fact he said showed his client wasn’t trying to hide anything. Westling also painted the prosecutions’ case as consisting of cherry-picked evidence that doesn’t show jurors the full picture.

Katie and Zack Steeves, the stepchildren of Const. Robb Costello, one of the two police officers slain in last Friday's shooting in Fredericton, remember their stepfather as a supportive family man with a unwavering positive attitude.
•
Costello, 45, and fellow officer Sara Burns, 43, were the first police officers to arrive at the scene of Friday's shooting on the city's north side and were among the four people killed.
•
“He just gave off this air of positivity and he was just this person I would want to be… That’s going to be my goal,” Zack says.
•
A public visitation will be held for the officers this Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. AT in the ballroom of the Fredericton Convention Centre, and a private regimental funeral will be held in Fredericton on Saturday.

Robb Costello, one of the two police officers slain in last Friday's shooting in Fredericton, remember their stepfather as a supportive family man with a unwavering positive attitude. • Costello, 45, and fellow officer Sara Burns, 43, were the first police officers to arrive at the scene of Friday's shooting on the city's north side and were among the four people killed. • “He just gave off this air of positivity and he was just this person I would want to be… That’s going to be my goal,” Zack says. • A public visitation will be held for the officers this Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. AT in the ballroom of the Fredericton Convention Centre, and a private regimental funeral will be held in Fredericton on Saturday. • • • Credit: CBC News | #CBC  #CBCNews  #Fredericton  #FrederictonShooting
Acclaimed Canadian painter Mary Pratt died at her home in St. John’s Tuesday evening. She was 83.
•
She was recognized for transforming ordinary objects of her daily life, like a slice of chocolate cake and jars of homemade jam, into extraordinarily realistic works of art (swipe right in the gallery to view some examples of her work).
•
“I don’t mind celebrating the domestic. I mean how could we get along without it?” Pratt told CBC News in a 2013 interview.
•
In a statement Wednesday, her four children, John, Anne, Barbara and Ned, described Pratt as a “master of light and colour,” and who taught them to find art around them.
•
“We sat at her supper table, we filleted and ate the rich Atlantic salmon that our father caught from the river outside our door, savoured the warm brown loaves of bread, and lusted after the swirling cream topped trifles,” they said.
•
Pratt had a hand in lobbying for the construction of The Rooms, the arts complex in St. John’s which houses the provincial art gallery, museum and archives. St. John’s gallery owner Emma Butler, who represented Pratt for much of her career, says Pratt lived her life “with guts, but with grace, always with grace.”
•
“As you get older, you don’t see this long extension of your life, but you can seen an extension of your art,” Pratt once said. “So gradually I’m beginning to think that art is more important to me than life.”

This is my hometown and surrounding areas current situation with the wildfires. Burns Lake sits where the yellow indication is on the map. The orange is the evacuation alerts, the red is the evacuation orders. So many people have had to pack up and leave their homes. As much as it would be amazing to get rain, there is no sign of it. We have so many volunteers, firefighters, local and international working hard, air support, machinery...there’s even been a call for the military to come in, but that’s only so many to hundreds of fires spread out across the province. We desperately need more help and I hope that it will arrive before entire townships are lost. #bcwildfires #saveourtowns #globalbcnews #vancouvernews #cbcnews #pleasesendhelp

Praying for everyone in Genoa, Italy as the images of the bridge collapse leave us stunned. #Repost @cbcthenational
・・・
Shocking images are coming out of Genoa, Italy, today after a major highway bridge collapsed during a violent storm, sending vehicles and drivers plummeting as far as 90 metres to the ground.
•
A video posted by Italy’s national police appears to show a section of the Morandi Bridge give way midday local time. A voice can be heard yelling, “Oh, God! Oh God!” on the recording, as an upright structure falls in the distance.
•
Photos from the scene show a huge 80-meter expanse missing between two sections of the bridge that are still standing.
•
Other images show a blue tractor trailer that appears to have stopped just short of the gaping hole, while the wrecked vehicles of less fortunate drivers stick out of the rubble.
•
The Morandi bridge, built in 1967, lies on an important highway that connects Italy to France and many vacation resorts. Today’s disaster strikes as many Italians are travelling ahead of Ferragosto, a key public holiday of the summer break.
•
There was initial confusion over the exact number of people killed. Early figures said at least 22 people were killed, but crews are still searching for people in the heaps of concrete and twisted steel. An official said all of the victims appear to have been inside vehicles that plunged from the bridge at the moment of collapse.
•
Authorities suspect a structural weakness caused the tragedy.

Indigenous artist Philip Cote painted this Anishinaabe-style mural in Toronto’s Roncesvalles, a traditionally Polish neighbourhood.
•
Illustrated on the side of a pharmacy, its design echoes the style of the late Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau whose work is characterised by vivid colours outlined in black.
•
"This is a political statement to bring our stories into the open," said Indigenous artist Philip Cote who painted the mural. At least twenty people a day come up to ask about the mural, he added.
•
Veronica Feihl, manager of the Roncesvalles Business Improvement Association, said the mural is an important reminder that Indigenous communities have lived in the Toronto area for thousands of years.
•
Cote said the "main thing" he wanted from the mural is "for people to get a good feeling just from looking at it."

I think this is one of my coolest shots ever. I witnessed a total feeding frenzy at the time. A huge bait ball of Billfish was under armour by Finwhales, Humpbacks, Dolphins, Bluefin Tunas and Gannets! Never seen anything like it in my life. I can only hope that I will see it again in our bay later this fall.
