Lord Shiv's ancient cave temple at Kunnakudi that folds under UNESCO umbrella. This dravidian based rock cut belongs to Pandiya kingdom dated 8th century.
Refer pic5: look at single the single pillar bifurcated into 4 independent columns. Beauty is, this entire temple complex is carved out of single rock.
Ref 6&7: I suppose they are statues of the kings who built/sponsored the temple construction.
Ref 8&9: big carving of Lord Ganesha (pic 8) is to be seen thru thin vertical rock window (pic 9). Amazing visual treat indeed.
A day in a cave.
48 degrees, 8 people, 70 feet underground.
6 hours of walking, crawling, and sliding up and down silty cave floors and squeezing through limestone passages carved out by water a million years ago.
I met a furniture repair man, a house builder, a teacher, a farmer.
Every weekend they map, dive, explore, and exist in this and other caves that they have discovered, buy, preserve, and welcome first timers like me into.
This day, a cave diver tried to find a recently discovered crevice underwater where they believe they will find another series of caverns, unseen.
We climbed back up to the freezing surface and had dinner together.
I'd like to thank whoever was tasked with mopping the dry mud from the bathroom floor as well as this awesome group of weirdos.
I'll be back next week.
