Day 2: lake Sevan or how to enjoy the flow of time
The morning started in the bus to the Northern bus station of Yerevan which is located on the last meters of Yerevan. The views from the bus even in the city were stunning - high snowy mountains...you don’t need even to leave the city to see them!
At the bus station there were several mini buses going to the towns and villages located to the north from Yerevan. The same as yesterday, you cannot understand where the bus goes unless it goes to some touristic place - in such cases you can see names in English and sometimes Russian. The bus station itself is huge but empty - no schedules, no cashiers, no people. I located my bus quickly but had to wait for almost an hour for its departure - and here I felt a bit unusual: no shops, it’s on a highway so you cannot actually move anywhere, no actual places to sit, even in the empty but open bus station, additionally I didn’t have internet as I am in a foreign country. And I had time to think that we already have used so much to distract our mind and attention - looking at the phone, going to get a tea, staring at the shops, finding some sights to see...almost no time for own thoughts.
It took a bit less then an hour of very picturesque road to get to the town Sevan from where I took a taxi to the lake Sevan and its peninsula with a medieval church.
Lake Sevan is one of the largest freshwater high-altitude lakes in Eurasia. The weather was sunny and quite warm so I could walk on the peninsula surrounded by water and enjoying views of the lake with snowy mountains around.
But the lake and peninsula are famous also for the monastery Sevanavank which was build in 874 by princess Miriam - these were times when Armenia was under Arab rule. It’s in a very Armenian style, which is very unique and interesting.
I finished my day in the bookstore in Yerevan where they have some books in Russian by Armenian authors. They have new and secondhand books and I managed to find two books for myself 😍
Driving from Mtskheta to the Shiomghvime Monastery is worth the time evenn if the monastery itself is closed 🏰🤔
The landscapes all the way through the hills are just mindblowing 🏞️
📌 One more pin on places I want to return some day to hike around and enjoy the nature 🌳
