Happy #InternationalCatDay ! Can you spot the #cat seemingly camouflaged into its surroundings in this painting by Canadian artist #DavidMilne ? Discover the many hidden treasures in Milne’s work at the Gallery in our current exhibition “David Milne: Modern Painting,” on view until September 9!
In 1916, Milne and his wife Patsy moved to the hamlet of Boston Corners in the countryside just north of New York City. Their new life away from urban bustle allowed Milne to focus on his art making and the development of a pictorial style all his own. He produced a series of experimental paintings of Patsy seated in the landscape. With the war effort in Europe well under way, the phenomenon of #camouflage was becoming part of the visual language of daily life. In this painting, Milne seems to study the effect, using it as a device to implicate the figure into the background with striking effect. Come take a closer look for yourself!
