Incredibly fortunate to have a private viewing of Richard III’s Book of Hours with some of the Surrey Group of the Richard III Society. Unfortunately no photos of the illuminated pages were permitted but it was wonderful to see it close up, no touching allowed, particularly the additions in his own hand. It dates from about 1420 and at some point after his death in 1485 has been rebound after being cut down in size, presumably to fit on somebody’s book shelf! We went to Anne of Cleves House today.
She wasn’t in! 💁🏼♀️
Anne of Cleves, was Henry the 8th’s, 4th wife. Henry didn’t like her on sight. In fact he said: “I like her not.” -charming!
Anne, agreed to an annulment of their marriage, a clever move, that quite possibly spared her life. It saw her get a nice settlement, with a generous allowance and property which included this house. It also meant that she could go back to court as a welcomed friend of the King. Xxx
