Thank you for all that you brought to our world and to the dreams you brought to life in so many young boys and girls wrapped up in your comic books learning they could do anything 🖤🎬#stanlee#captainmycaptain#thankyou#rip
It’s been almost a decade since we began, when he was doing post-graduate studies and interviewing for medical school. He lived in Winston-Salem and I lived in Seattle and it seemed there was a world between us.
We were so new but I was so smitten and I knew I’d give up Seattle if he asked me to.
Then he wrote to say he was considering joining the Army.
I listened to his reasons, and even though there was a tangible fear clenching my heart, I knew he would do it, and that I would support him. He felt called: not only to be an Emergency physician, but to offer help and healing to those serving our country. “Will you have to deploy?” “Probably.” “Will you be in harm’s way?” “Maybe? Not as much as some.” Just as I knew he would follow his calling, would do whatever it took to serve, I knew I would follow him to the ends of the earth.
Whatever my doubts, I believed in his belief. And I loved and respected him all the more.
He is quiet about it—the courage and the sacrifice—but that’s just his way.
There are so many talented, hard-working men and women serving, in so many different capacities. Unless you are in the system, it’s hard to understand just how much personal freedom they defer to ensure the freedom of others. I certainly had no clue.
To my Captain, and to all those who have served or are serving: thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You are courageous to a degree that I will never comprehend. And to all the military spouses and children and parents out there: I see you, too. ❤️ #veteransday#captainmycaptain#hooah#army#armylife 📷: The day he returned from Afghanistan, April 2016
