The Canadian mining company Glacier Lake Resources recently staked claims on Colt Mesa, in an area that was formerly protected by Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It is far to early for mining companies to be buying land, as Trump’s (illegal) revocation is still being debated in court, but it is horrifying nonetheless. Colt Mesa Mine falls right into my favorite section of the Hayduke, between Capitol Reef and Escalante; and in all of my thru-hikes around the country, I can honestly say that this is the most beautiful place I have ever been and a large reason why I am still in Kanab. I haven’t seen much information regarding the lawsuits in a while, but @grandstaircasepartners and @protectwildutah are both monitoring the development in this region and have plenty of ways to get involved in protecting southern Utah’s wilderness, whether through volunteer programs or donation. There’s a volunteer session in manti-la sal through SUWA on my birthday if anyone else is interested!
I took this photo from a secret overlook of the Goosenecks in Capitol Reef National Park. The view from up top is pretty mindblowing as you look 800 feet down to the creek below. Even better than the overlook is the hike through this canyon. It follows the creek all the way and you get to down climb a few little waterfalls. It's pretty neat.
If you look in the upper left you can see a person at the main overlook for a sense of scale.
