This is Carlos, a Santero from Santiago. It may seem as though he’s winking, but look closely and you’ll see he is not. He is, in fact, blind in his right eye. He tells me that he finds comfort in his religion as he feels it gives him strength despite his disability.
There are many that turn to Santería as a way of overcoming illness. In reality healing is Santería’s largest function. I am told that people from a breadth of religions in Cuba come to Santería priests to help them in their lives, treating all manner of ailments both physical and mental.
I have to say, I find this attitude rather refreshing. Personally, I don’t think one’s beliefs should be restrictive, neither should people subscribe wholly to one set of beliefs. If more people believed that people and teachings from other cultures could teach them something, then I truly believe the world would be a better place.
