This can be the last post I ever make. If you do these then there is no way you can't burn fat. Some of you might wanna screenshot this, I'm not kidding.

Obviously there are 2 components - diet and exercise.
•
As far as diet goes, research confirms that 1.5g protein/lb of bodyweight is essential if you want to burn fat.
Moderate carbs timed around workouts is also important. Since you are training, you need carbs to fuel you.
To burn fat, you HAVE to be a caloric deficit. Its a necessary condition.
Supplementing with L-Carnitine is a good idea. It transports fat cells into the mitochondria to be used for fuel.
In a caloric deficit, creatine can do wonders for giving you more strength during training.
BCAAs also provide you energy during workouts and keep protein synthesis elevated. Caloric deficit + BCAAs is a deadly combo for burning fat while keeping muscle.

As far as training goes, compound movements burn more calories than isolation moves. It triggers post-exercise oxygen consumption, or afterburn effect, which I talked about in a recent post.
You should train to maintain strength. In a caloric deficit, you will feel weaker. So instead of decreasing the weight, keeo it throws same and decrease the reps if you have to. But not the weight. Because in a caloric deficit, when you lose strength, you will lose some size as well. And we are not trying to lose muscle, we are trying to lose fat 😄.
Train for no longer than 45 minutes, especially for fat loss (because you ate in a caloric deficit). Keep it short and intense for best results.
HIIT cardio on rest days is an excellent idea for both fat loss and recovery.

By far the most common question asked by someone who out of shape and overweight is... "How do I get abs and lose this belly fat?" This is it.

Before I begin, the numbers are to only give you an idea of what holds more priority. Nothing more.
•
Let me tell you what it is NOT. It is not doing a bunch if ab exercises. Because abs are a very small muscle group so working them doesn't burn a lot of calories. Remember me mentioning that muscle contractions burn most of the calories in your calories? Knowing that, if the muscle is small then it won't burn a lot of calories alone.
•
What burns more calories are compound movements. These are movements that involve more than 1 muscle groups. If more muscles are working, that means more calories burned. Most compound moves involve big muscles like chest, back, and legs.
•
Going heavy in compound moves triggers post-exercise oxygen consumption, or better known as "afterburn effect." This means you body will burn more calories at rest for up to 48 hours after the workout is over because your metabolism is faster.. Even during sleep! Pretty awesome huh 😎😎
•
Obviously nutrition is the biggest part. No matter how much you trigger the afterburn effect, you can't outtrain a bad diet. Period.
•
You shouldn't completely abandon ab exercises altogether. Working abs might not burn a lot of calories but it will build the muscle which you need to do to make the abs show. But this has the least priority.

I recently had a conversation with a friend who wanted to follow a ketogenic diet. So we first talked about if the keto diet is even right for you. Here is a check list.
Even if you have 1 condition that isn't right, you shouldn't follow this diet.
•
It's not right for you if you have a fast metabolism. Because the keto diet is high fat & low carb, you might feel tired. It's not a good way to have sustainable energy throughout the day and its going to make your training suffer.
•
Because it is a low carb diet, you will have lower blood sugar levels. If your blood sugar is already instable this can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor before following any kind of a diet.
•
If you've had kidney issues, then keto diet is a poor choice. It is strongly correlated with kidney diseases as it is. So obviously see a doctor.
•
If you have nutrient deficiencies, keto or any other resrictive diet with very low calories isn't recommended. You SHOULD be eating carbs,  particularly complex carbs.
•
Now, if you have a slow metabolism, then detox will work for you. By eating more fat, you are signaling your body to use fat for fuel instead of carbs, and it will do exactly that while you maintain energy for the day.
•
If you have been progressively lowering your carbs over the past few weeks, then keto is perfect as the last phase in your nutrition plan.
•
Lastly, you diet should already be high in protein with a bare minimum of 1g/lb of BW.
•

Here are some foods that have tricked us when we are trying to lose fat.

Cereal: More than 80% of Americans start their breakfast the exact same way - a bowl of cereal and milk. Cereal ha says lot of calories and most of it is sugar. It might be healthy overall and might work for purely building muscle but by eating cereal you will likely not be in a caloric deficit.
•
Most Protein Bars: Most of these are basically candy bars. The reason why I say that is because most of them have much more carbs than they have protein. If you want a good quality protein bar, look for one that is as close to a 1:1 ratio of protein to carbs. Most have high carbs, and moderate protein, and what's funny is that the fat in them is as much as protein.

Fruit yoghurt: Fruit yoghurt is processed. Even the fruit in it not natural. It has high-fructose corn syrup and other sugars that can make you easily consume a lot of calories in a short time. It definitely is a no-no when fat loss is your goal. And if you are also trying to improve your insulin sensitivity,.... you're screwed. Always go for Greek yoghurt.

Vegetable oils: So much to stay about this. Firstly, its processed. the seeds are bombarded with heat and other solvents to extract the oil. This makes the fat in the oil unstable and polyunsaturated. The body doesn't digest that. I don't like demonizing foods but processed vegetable oil is the culprit of heart disease and diabetes and even obesity. Most of you will kill me, but cholesterol based, natural animal fats are what you should consume because after all, that's what our cells are made of - cholesterol and saturated fat. Simply: just keep it natural.

Fruit juices: Did you that it takes 3-4 oranges to make a glass of OJ? That's a whole lot of calories and fructose. It won't help you lose fat. But you should consume 3 oz. everyday just to keep the liver happy. When the liver is happy, everything functions properly.

A slice of Domino's medium pizza has between 350-450cal depending the variant you choose, with Extravaganza having the highest! That's like an entire meal 😥😥😥, and I had two slices 😭😭😭. People do this everywhere I see. These are the most common mistakes people do that need to be corrected if you are serious about your fat loss goals.

You're doing too much low intensity steady state (LISS) cardio. I've mentioned before that you need to create overload for your body to change. LISS cardio is not intense. Rule of thumb: if you can hold a conversation during your session, its not intense enough. So I'll refresh your memory by saying, HIIT cardio is the real OG of fat loss 😄
•
Speaking of intense, I hear people use the excuse "I don't want to get bulky." Here's something you should know. Becoming bulky has nothing to do with training if you are in a calorie deficit. It is POSSIBLE to get "bulky" if you aren't eating enough calories. Plain and simple. Even for beginners, train heavy relative to you 😊
•
Healthy doesn't mean few calories. If you eat too much of anything and you will not lose fat, even the healthy food. If you've been eating crap all day then just switching to healthy eating will make a difference, but after that, you need to become more selective.
•
You might not realize it but you might be eating too many calories. That salad dressing will add another 200 kcal. Same goes for that snack you have while watching tv. Its good to track everything in the beginning.
•
Research proves that eating more protein increases fat loss because of its high thermic value. Nothing more to say than just eat more of it
•
Less sleep = more cortisol = bad for bad loss.

Nearly everyone I talk to breaks these rules of fat loss. They want it fast and end up losing muscle mass along with it too.
There is a simple 3 step process.
•
Step 1: Set your mind to this, and this goes with anything in life, what is long and sustainable doesn't come easy or fast. It takes patience and hard work. So be okay with losing fat slowly. Aim for about 1 to 2 pounds per week. You try to lose it fast, you will gain all of it back. If you are a newbie, then fat loss will happen incredibly fast. But as you become more advanced, everything begins to slow down, or becomes hard to sustain and your body completely harden at the new body composition and bodyweight.
•
Step 2: Figure out how much calories you are CURRENTLY eating, before you even begin your fat loss plan (your maintenance calories) . This is different for everyone. For some people it may be 1800 kcal. For others it might 3000 kcal. And they might even be the same bodyweight. And that's the point, its different for EVERYONE so you need to figure your's out. You can do this by tracking what you normally eat for one or two days.
•
Step 3: Now that you have your starting calories figured out, you need to decrease a little bit from there. Not just jump on a crazy low carb or keto diet plan from the get go. Because then you won't have any room to cut back further. Because you can't cut further back from zero... Basically, your body will adapt and hit a plateau, so you should do it with a progression. Everything is a progression. I talk about this in Fat Loss 101 (link in bio).

There are e couple ways to track progress when it comes to fat loss (or even muscle gain for that matter). Easy to do and follow, here they are.

Weigh yourself on a scale the same day every week, the same time everyday. Some people do it with their clothes on, others with clothes off. But you have to stay consistent. While I do think that the number on the scale isn't everything it does give you a good enough idea to make an educated guess about what kidb of progress you are making. Maybe you are working hard and doing everything right but your weight didn't change so that might mean you gained muscle and lost fat. So that's where the other ways come in.

Taking measurements is a good way to track progress as well especially the waist and legs if you are trying to lose fat. It gives you a pretty good indication of your overall body composition. If you can do a skin fold test to calculate your body fat percent, that is even better.

Before and after pictures gives you hard evidence of the progress you are making. You have two pictures to compare every single detail about your body. In my opinion, nothing is more accurate than this approach. Not even the skin fold test, because at the end of the day its about how you feel about how you look.

Another lesser known and talked about approach is trying old clothes. But you should only do this if you take before and after pictures. Otherwise this approach is not enough. If your clothes are getting bigger and loser (or even smaller and tighter in case of muscle gain) then you know without a doubt that you are making good progress. This is like the cherry on top of tracking your progression and it feels pretty good to know the old clothes don't fit you anymore.
