This month, our #EducatorOfTheMonth recognition goes to Kavon Baker, a Brooklyn teacher who has been hosting a basketball tournament “Loyal to the Game”. Baker dreamed about starting his own summer basketball tournament for young people in his community since his days in Kingsborough College. Now, while working as a public school teacher, he has made his dream come true. The tournament has been taking place in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, for the last five years.
Day 13 of the #thankfulteacherphotochallenge is supposed to be a favorite thank you card from a student, but I’m going to cheat a little. When I found out last April that my teaching contract wouldn’t be renewed for this school year, I was blind-sided and devastated to say the least. I wasn’t at liberty to be transparent with my students about what was happening, but I had to return to my classroom to teach through the end of June, knowing all along that I wouldn’t be coming back to the school in September. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time crying about this sudden change in my life, and a few times, I couldn’t hide my tears and students saw me visibly upset. Since they didn’t know what was happening, they assumed that someone close to me had passed away. So days after I found out that I would no longer be their teacher, a group of my girls from homeroom brought me this sweet gift basket with a note that read “We love you ❤️.” This gesture of compassion and generosity singlehandedly changed my attitude toward the circumstances I had been dealt—in that moment I decided to remain fully present for my students while also searching relentlessly for the best possible school for me to transition to. By early June, I had secured two strong job offers, but I accepted my current position and have not regretted it for a second. I miss these kiddos, but they are in my heart and memory forever! #teachersofinstagram#teachersfollowteachers#elateacher#humanitiesteacher#tftpickme#iteachtoo#iteachmiddleschool#iteach8th#iteacheighth#brooklynteacher#nctevillage#teacherinspiration#teachertips#missmindfulmiddle#teacherstruggles#teacherreality#studentgifts
I am woefully behind on the #thankfulteacherphotochallenge so I’m going to try to catch up a bit here...Day 11: compliment someone. As a full-time teacher and Mom of two boys, life is insanely busy and stressful all the time. This guy right here, through thick and thin, has remained by my side and devoted to our relationship. Joel and I are both what some might call “difficult” people—set in our ways, stubborn to a fault, and always right! We have had to learn and grow together, and every day we have to make a choice to continue this challenging journey together. Anyway, I want Joel to know that I appreciate how present he has been for our family lately, spending extra time with our boys so I can have alone time to decompress, or so I can work extra hours on lesson planning or grading. He makes lunch for the kids every morning, helps with the dishes, mops the floors, does laundry, and takes me out on beautiful dates. On top of all of that, he works harder than most people as a federal correctional officer. I really love my fiancé! #teachersofinstagram#teachersfollowteachers#elateacher#humanitiesteacher#tftpickme#iteachtoo#iteachmiddleschool#iteach8th#iteacheighth#brooklynteacher#nctevillage#teacherinspiration#teachertips#missmindfulmiddle

Because for me, my new year starts at the beginning of every school year. So far, I've been learning so much about myself that i am so ready for the "New" in me. I'm going Fierce. I'm so excited!!!! Taking back the year that i lost from anxiety & depression. God is good. #brooklynteacher#nycteachers#teachersfollowteachers
Today a former co teacher and I had the opportunity & honor to accompany a selected group of 7th & 8th grade latina girls to visit American Express Headquarters in New York City and have a panel speak to them about being proud of they are and not to let anything discourage them from reaching their dreams. Then other employees of #AMEX volunteered their time to have group sessions and share their experiences and journey to the girls. I loved it! Praying that a plan happens to continue this new relationship. #HOLA#AMEX#nyc#nycteacher#brooklynteacher#iteach7th#iteach8th#teachersfollowteachers#teachersofinstagram#teachersofig
What do you do? .
This question is a networking opener. As a teacher, I sometimes drop my head, almost in embarrassment. “I’m a teacher.” Lately though I’ve been working to raise my head. Because I’m not just a teacher. And neither are you. Here are some examples of what I do as a teacher:
1. I explain how the English language works so that language can be less discriminatory (subject verb agreement is still a way to discriminate). 2. I encourage and support students who are marginalized even when they tell me to eff off. It’s worked for them before, but I can help them see that people do care.
3. I open doors for communication. My classroom is safe to ask questions and to share ideas. A student’s voice matters; a teacher’s voice matters.
4. I create new ways to work with materials. Teaching is hard. It’s exhausting. And I can’t always use what’s created. But I can look at my students, adjust what’s out there, and stay with them in the work. They are our future; they deserve the best.
5. I am an adult who has high expectations but lots of love. Teaching in a school is difficult. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking. But what it can’t be is permissive and excuse making. This is where teachers are parents, social workers, caretakers, etc. but not friends. Not yet. .
I am not just a teacher; I AM a teacher. What about you?
🇺🇸 When I'm in a bad mood, I put on a leather jacket, sit on the bike 🏍 and go, go where my eyes are taking me 😎 ....
.... well, almost 😄 In reality it’s not like that at all... 🙈 I am actually calling one very nice person, who takes me to ride a bike... Because she knows that I love it! And she asks me 10 times if I’m ok. 🤗😍
Thank you @_spicy_s for your approach in raising my mood! 🤗❤💋 😅 It was such a cool day, Svetulya!
It is very important when there are people in your life who know how to help you from a half-glance or half-word, without unnecessary gestures ❤ I have only THREE people in my life❤ (except my family), who I can trust in this!
Do you have a person to call any time and who always knows how to cheer you up? 😁
How often do you sit back and enjoy the view? And I mean really take a moment to enjoy the view. 💫
If I’m honest I rarely do. I’m spoiled living in NYC and Brooklyn. Growing up in Wisconsin, I only ever dreamed of the city. And yet almost 18 years after moving to the city I call it home. So when I sit back I often think of the city as a small place. A neighborhood where everyone knows my name. I rarely put on the glasses that remind me of where I grew up and who I was. I often forget that the taxis and the traffic make our city. Mostly because when I’m behind the wheel I’m honking and cursing out the driver in front of me. When the train runs late I forget how it was to first swipe for a 9 train downtown (y’all I gotta take it back). Sometimes I forget to look up or to look out. To notice the architecture and the skyline that once reminded me that NYC was where I could chase my dreams. Where I could fall in love. Where I could be me. 💫
Sitting on the @bklynlibrary steps I’m reminded that I can stop and see. That I need to stop and see. That without this moment the others, frantically racing to be on time, don’t matter. So for today, this Wednesday, I’m going to stop and look. I hope you do as well. 💫

What do you want to reach to the stars for?
I’ve been thinking about this for a few days. In fact, it’s part of why I didn’t post this weekend. I was saddened and frustrated by the recent political actions. I felt discouraged by the people who are leaders, even if I disagree with them. I struggled to stay positive in my classroom, wondering how I could keep positive at all. I needed to step back. So I did. 💫
Today I’m off from school. But I’m not really off. I’m going to spend the day looking at my students work and remember what inspires me to keep reaching for the stars. And then I’m going to plan my October because to be honest, I just haven’t taken time to do what I need to do to be present for you and for myself. 💫
So what am I planning? First, I’m joining @barbaradigangi and @liveyinsa for a #healingcircle Wednesday. Then I’m going to work on @teachwellthy events, especially one for #teacherselfcare . After all, we have been teaching for 6 weeks and so much has happened. We need time to #restandrejuvenate 💫
I’m reaching for the stars to serve my students and my fellow #nycteachers . What about you? Let me know below 💜

The kids are working hard on learning the different articles from the Universal Declaration of Human rights! They’re doing amazing understanding the document and showing how someone would be “keeping the promise” or “breaking it” Soon we will be moving on to various narratives and applying what we’ve learned to them! Should be interesting 🗽🤓📚 #expeditionarylearning#udhr#ela#literacy#jigsawactivity#groupwork#brooklynteacher
My supply cart! Been dying to post these but life gets in the way. This things honestly brings a smile to everyone that sees it. It's so bright, crazy looking and loud that people, smile, giggle comment and they go beyond their day. That's my goal this year to make every teacher & student smile on the 3rd floor (another goal is to raise kids confidence, reading levels and identify number connections of course!). It has my data binder, snacks, figits, supplies, rewards, chanchlas (slippers), water bottles, holds my laptop, planner, other paper and Teachery decorations! I'm taking this year and putting my all into my kids. Last year i battled depression and anxiety. This year, i just need rainbows, pencil decorations and getting back to feeling like the great teacher that I am! This was part of my #selfcare strategy this year
#spedteacher#teacher#brooklynteacher#nycteacher#momofboys#momblog#sped#iteach7th#iteach8th#publicschool#iteachmiddleschool#anxiety#depression you will overcome it.
