My wedding philosophy, cont’d in comment. Beautiful photos by @karamercer.co .
What I love about weddings, more than anything, is the energy of bringing a vision to life. I love that in the beginning, the process is kind of dreamlike—I build a design plan from the stories my brides share with me; memories, dreams, childhood flowers, intangible things. And I love the great effort of sourcing, researching, & finally physically creating a wedding. In a world where dreams are often unrealized, this one is not. I give everything I have to see this one fulfilled. A favorite artist, Sarah Rhyanen of Saipua, spoke once about how the planning process moves from memories & ephemera to the great effort of creating an event, & it’s always remained with me. Creating this way demands everything of you—mind, body, spirit. .
I have always believed in the expressive power of flowers, & their power to invite the human experience, the human touch. I am saddened by weddings that don’t explore their interpretive potential. For flowers are the expressive soul of any given wedding. You cannot justify them logically—yes, they will die; yes, they will fade. (The wedding also, I might add, will end.) But art, & especially floral art, is about the reverence of encounter. And our souls were made to encounter beauty; to be deeply moved by it; to feel the pain, even, of its leaving. Flowers—fleeting, imperfect, and tender—remind us of the transience (and unspeakable beauty) of our own lives; of all that we experience, & all that we are. We are no strangers to their particular pathos. .
I pride myself in sourcing the most exquisite & rare flowers. I feel, even, that I can figure out what someone’s signature flower is, if I spend a little time around them. I would travel to the opposite ends of the country to find just the right patch of elderflower, to cut down just the right kind of mottled foliage, or leggy wild rose, if only I could. But in the end, however much it is about the flowers— and it is-- it’s about something more. It’s about the vision. About taking the dream & bringing it into the context of life, so we can live one moment of near perfect realization & union with the soul.
