I used to HATE this time of the night - I mean let’s be real, who wants to be alone with their thoughts??? Our thoughts can be scary and stress-inducing and just really freaking unpleasant. But we don’t have to be involved in the neuro-chatter..🧠We don’t even have to listen to it. When the chatter is extra loud, I love to use the exercise that @headspace teaches in their meditations. It is imagining that your thoughts are cars on the road. They zip back and forth in front of you. You are sitting on the the grass a ways back from the road, just watching. Just noticing. Being careful not to jump up and get in a car. And when you do (you will) stepping out and sitting back down to watch the thoughts.

This gives me a chance to actually rest. It gives my brain the chance to chatter, uninterrupted. It gives me the chance to sit still mentally and not worry about what I’m thinking. It allows my body to relax and for me to feel the moment through my senses, not just my thoughts.

❗️It’s important to note that the thoughts might not change! Mine haven’t. But my responses have. Which makes all the difference.

“I never knew you had anxiety.” “You never seem like anything’s wrong.”
These are a few things I heard from friends and colleagues after I shared my story in the papers earlier this year. 
Mental health does not discriminate, it does not care about your gender, your age, your race or religion, and it certainly isn’t one size fits all. So many people reached out to me after I shared my story and wanted to tell me theirs. 
This truly inspired me to continue talking about mental illness and raising awareness to help others and break the stigma. 
I struggled for years undiagnosed, and my only escape was the gym. I got to the point where I couldn’t leave the house or go to work. I got laughed at by a medical professional when I first asked for help, and it took a long time for me to work up the courage to go and ask someone else for help to finally get the help I needed. 
A lot of issues surrounding mental health stems from ignorance, which is why we need to help educate people in order to #breakthestigma 
It’s okay not to be okay, and it’s important to reach out and talk to someone when you feel you’re struggling. You are not alone. .
Join our warrior wall and our movement and let’s get mental health awareness trending together.

Either way, therapy is a HUGE help.⠀

Why? Because therapy tends to our emotional health and well-being.⠀

Think about it.⠀

You go to the dentist twice a year for your dental hygiene.⠀

You see a doctor once a year for a physical checkup.⠀

Wouldn’t it be cool if we went to a therapist yearly (or monthly!) just to touch base regarding our emotional wellness?⠀

But there’s still a stigma associated with therapy.⠀
⠀
People think you must be crazy if you see a counselor.⠀
⠀
I say you’re crazy if you DON’T see a counselor!⠀
⠀
Here’s the reality: your issues are there and they’re influencing you—often in ways that are unbeknownst to you.⠀
⠀
So, you can head to a therapist’s office to unpack your stuff and process it with a professional in a safe space...⠀
⠀
Or you can let your issues catapult to the surface—which would, by the way, most likely happen in a very heated, emotionally charged and potentially unsafe setting.⠀
⠀
To me, it’s a lot cooler to tend to your psychological health in a safe, responsible environment.⠀
⠀
But then again, I’m not a fan of drama...⠀
⠀
Which is why I love this message.⠀

This is my new “fitness” account

Let me explain that - I am on a weight loss journey, I have been for what I would say is my whole life but more seriously over the last two years. But my life is more then that. I am more then my weight. At least that’s what I try and tell myself.

I want this account to be more then losing weight though. I want it to involve all things that can relate to health. That means self-love and the learning curve that comes with that. That means mental health because you can loose all the weight you want but if your mind isn’t progressing also, I feel, you will always feel stuck. And I still won’t forget about food and exercise!

But anyway I can talk forever but for my first post I just want to set the tone and kind of introduce myself. So WELCOME 👋 my name is Caitlyn I’ve lose somewhere about 40 or 50 pounds at this point but I’m not done yet! I struggled my whole life with running away from feeling anything. I never let anybody see behind the curtains or see the times I would be home alone with my face in a pillow crying for unknown reasons. I often looked at myself as pathetic, a wimp, and lost. So through my teenage years, I developed the only coping mechanism I knew and I turned to self-harm via drugs and alcohol.

I figured if I numbed myself, I wouldn’t have to feel any of the emotions I had inside and became a person people feared so they would see how strong I was even though I was still broken on the inside.

I always say it's best to check it out with your GP to confirm this and reassure yourself. Knowing that it's normal and that you will still be able to breathe can help. It also helps to practice mindfulness and relaxation and to use distraction techniques to shift your focus away from the symptom.
Focusing on the yucky feeling can make it worse, and make you hypersensitive to it. So try just gently noticing it and then shifting your attention to something else. 
Exercise, drinking water, deep breathing and sucking on a lollie can help.

A few years ago, I couldn't even say the word suicide. And despite how far my recovery has come, there are still many movies I can't watch due to certain graphic content and my PTSD. I still experiences moments of flashback, dissociation, panic, and night terrors. .
.
But this weekend I pushed way outside of my comfort zone and did something that scares me. I took a course on Applied Suicide Intervention Skills and learned things that I wish I had known years ago, wish others had known. I did this so that I can be an effective social worker in the future, and recognize signs to prevent future losses. .
.

This 2 day course may not seem like an accomplishment for most, but to me it meant having conversations I haven't been able to have, about things I haven't been able to mention, while remaining present and able to learn effectively. I owe so much to my amazing service pup Lily, who keeps me grounded and safe, often from my own mind. .
.

If you haven't taken this course, I highly recommend it. Knowing what to see and hear, and how to reply and support, could save a life. You never know who's hurting. .

If you're concerned about someone, ask. If you're struggling, please reach out. Sometimes just noticing the clouds can help them begin to disapate. .

I’ve realized, in retrospect, that I haven't been doing very good self-care recently, or care at all for that matter.

I had my antidepressants refilled a little over a week ago, and received a different formulation than I normally do. I'm wondering if that's why I've felt a little "off" lately, but I don't really know the cause(s).

Tonight I washed my hair for the first time in a week. 
I didn't even enjoy the process, but I am really glad I did it. I'm going to be gentle with myself for a bit. Take the "as needed" medicine I've been trying to avoid so I won't have to fight sleep so much. Eat more food with nutritional value. Go outside occasionally. All the little things that add up to a lot. 
Remember that this moment is just a moment, not forever.

Things aren't bad. They're 'meh'. And 'meh' is okay.

I struggled with this concept alot and that is why I wrote it and speak on it from my experiences. When I didn’t know my value I allowed myself to digest hurt from people (Men specifically- lets keep it 💯) because they didn’t value me but the issue at that moment was not with them, it was ME! How could I require what I didn’t  comprehend I deserved! I have accepted less, still do sometimes but it is a journey! I do know one thing. Each day I wake up I add to my value bank! I make the devil mad daily because I praise God through my storms and sunshine! I realized that people will continue to do you how YOU allow them to do you! I can’t afford less than what I deserve for the sake of saying I have it! Nothing is EVER that good! I learned that BUSY is a state of mind! I am BUSY too! But I create an environment that welcomes people and things I need! Time is valuable, so no you don’t need to give everyone who desires you time but be intentional with and who the things you do want! Life is so short! I don’t feel the need to chase or force anyone to be around me. Don’t allow people who don’t DESERVE you... make you feel DESERTED! I KNOW MY WORTH! Do YOU?

Have you ever had periods of your life that feel like they’re on a loop?  Like the same scenario is playing over, and over, and over again? 😒

I read a quote that said something like we get the same test over, and over, and over again until we pass it. Then we get a new test 🤓

Well, over the past year, I’ve noticed that when my attitude is on the verge of being particularly stank, by some stroke of divinity, I get sent away on business travel. 🤦🏽‍♀️

.
It’s like God reaches down, literally yanks me by the collar and flings my ass to somewhere to reflect on my life. It’s what parents do to children who are acting out, and seemingly unable to get themselves, or their little attitudes together.  It’s like adult timeout. .
.
.
Business travel immerses me in client meetings, trade shows, and other acts of service, usually in environments and destinations that are completely foreign to me.  It requires diplomacy, hospitality, and an attitude that is the polar opposite of stank. It humbles me, and makes me miss home, and the people who love me. .
.
.
What’s even more amazing to me is that my business travel is planned months in advance. The appointments that I’ve booked, and meetings that I’ve confirmed are all in advance. Yet, they’re all perfectly timed. .

.
Today, while I was in timeout, I had the most amazing bowl of brussel sprouts, had a coffee meeting with one of my faith-based clients, and shared a fantastic meal with a hospitality partner.

I get a lot of people who have commented and messaged  lately on my weight loss success and how inspiring I am. These comments are lovely and I’m so glad my story helps people. I’m always happy to chat but I don’t want people to think that it’s all sunshine and roses. I am not a perfectly put together human. This is me. No make-up, no filters, glasses free, exhausted and in my pj’s. I am a regular mama of two kids who has good and bad days. I struggle with anxiety and a few other health concerns. Keto and weight loss have been amazing and they have helped my situation immensely but it’s not a magic wand. Somedays I’m tired, sore and feel like the world will swallow me whole and this is totally ok. Do whatever helps you. Have the meltdown, take a nap, got for a run. Whatever works but just know that no one is “perfect” or “normal”. We are all just fumbling our way through life and while I stumble through mine I hope that I can help a few through theirs. As overly used as the word “balanced” is, it has taken on a whole new meaning for me lately. It used to just be about what I was putting in my body and the amount of exercise I would do in a week. But I’ve started to put more focus on what I’m feeding my mind too. What activities am I doing to stimulate my mental health? We don’t talk about mental health nearly enough, and despite the fact that we ALL struggle with it to some degree, it is still an extremely taboo subject. ⠀

WHY!!!!!!! The importance of taking care of your mental health has the biggest impact in how you show up every single day. Jobs should have mental health days, because sorry, 10 days of vacation a year or having a 5:2 ratio work week is not exactly a “balanced” lifestyle. So my new balance is focused on how I can commit to my career and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle at the same time, without excessive sacrifice - because how can you be truly balanced if you’re constantly compromising. Right now that looks like leaving a little bit early once a week to make it to yoga or spending the weekend at the beach with the fam or going to the #Eagles game with friends or getting back on the personal development wagon like I posted about last week! Its gotta be a complete mind/body/soul effort. ⠀

I wish there wasn’t such a stigma around mental health. I wish that people felt more comfortable seeking treatment or that it was more acceptable to talk about. Right now, it’s not. So people will continue to struggle. Please keep seeking the things that bring you the most happiness!!! #BreakTheStigma

NEURAL DYSFUNCTION IN DEPRESSION

The tangled roots of this enormous rainforest tree in Costa Rica reminded me of a bundle of nerves.  This inspired a post on neural dysfunction in depressed people.

In a recent examination of 50 brainwave-pattern studies, researchers discovered that reward processing in the brain differs in depressed people. Their analysis, recently published in The American Journal of Psychiatry, found consistent signs of neural dysfunction during reward processing in depressed people.  The study helps to confirm problems with reward processing in depression, a factor that has long been thought to be involved in the disorder, as depressed patients report feeling less (or no) pleasure and less interest in seeking out activities and social interactions.

RESEARCH: HYPOTHALAMUS & DEPRESSION

Although depression is one of the leading psychiatric disorders, its cause remains unclear. A recent study found that those affected by depressive disorder have a larger hypothalamus compared to their healthy counterparts. This could explain why many sufferers show increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol and are very often afflicted with periods of tension.

In depressed people, a malfunction of the stress feedback mechanism results in the stress response operating at full throttle, even when there is no apparent stressful situation.  In addition, the left hypothalamus is on average 5% larger in depressed and bipolar patients. It is possible that depressive disorders may arise from predisposition combined with an individual's environmental stress factors.

I don’t know when or where people first started feeling ashamed of being different, thinking different, feeling different; and I don’t know who first deemed psychiatry as taboo, or if it’s just always been that way.  I don’t know why the stigma exists or why it’s easier to not talk about it.  What I do know is that too many people are living in fear, and all the stigma does is hurt anyone who's already suffering and only adds to the fear.  I meant to post this last week because it was Mental Health Week but I got distracted and then forgot, so I’m posting it now because it doesn’t matter what day it is or what week or what month.  What matters is that mental health is equally as important as physical health, and should be treated so.  Mental illness is a topic that should be discussed, not ignored, no matter how big your problems may seem or how small you might think they are.  Your problems are real, and they matter.  You matter.  You matter more than you know.  You have the ability to help others just by being you.  Sometimes we forget this, so I wanted to remind you.  I wanted to remind you to love yourself.  Love your body and your mind.  Take care of yourself, nourish your body and your soul, and then take care of others.  Always listen if someone needs to talk.  Help end the stigma, raise awareness, provide support, educate the public, be a shoulder to lean on, or an ear to listen, do something to make a difference, because it’s important.  As Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
