I learned in grade school that homophones are two words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. This morning the words brake and break collided and came to have the same meaning for me.
We have a work deadline and everyone in the office is working on a presentation that has to go to the printer today. I was at work until after midnight, drove home and hit construction traffic, got up earlier than usual to get to my granddaughter’s honor roll ceremony, and headed back to work and hit traffic again! I was totally frustrated and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. The head talk started about how I should have looked at Waze. I started getting concerned about the work that needed to get done. I was dead stopped and decided to take a picture of all the brake lights. When I looked at the picture I took, it was the first time I saw the sunlight through the clouds. Then I looked around and noticed gigantic icicles on the sheared rockface at the edge of the highway. I noticed that the cattails were shedding and the sunlight made them shimmer. I thought about all the other commuters sitting in traffic and wondering where they were coming from and headed to...I took a BRAKE.
What makes you take a brake/break?
