Birthday Soiree for a Friend/The Good Stuff: Collected goodness from Portland & drove it home to the Gorge... Boxer Ramen-Vegetarian Curry; Bollywood Theater-Paneer Makhani; JaCiva's Bakery and Chocolatier-7th Heaven (cake, thanks to surprise guests). There were games, a birthday girl sparkling crown, art, dancing, a cozy wood stove fire, singing and bellyaching laughs, all the good stuff.
A bowl shiitake shoyu ramen to fill the void in my gut and my soul. Look at the amount of shiitakes in here, colouring the broth and perfuming the bowl. It was brought to me by the proprietor who looks like a scaled down version of Paul Bunyan: a grey toque, a full beard, but instead of a Mack shirt and suspenders he's adorned with a hipster t-shirt showing full sleeve tats, and cargo shorts. Though he might not have a massive bull as a sidekick and can chop down trees, he slings one mean bowl of noodles.
After my sugar buzz, I'm fueling up with some Asian fare. A bowl of potstickers in a sticky savoury sauce. A nice antidote to the sucrose that is coursing through my veins.
“Wait, I thought you were making dinner tonight.” Us every day. 😂 This is when we learned why ramen is such a thing in the PNW. It was wet, cold, hipster as hell, and we had just walked around some big trees that left our noses red and drippy. 😅
@brentcsimmons and I ate our way through a quick overnight in Portland. Best ramen this side of the Pacific at @boxerramen, with runners up Pok Pok for Thai wings and Cookie Dough Cafe for all the goodness of a bowl full of raw cookie dough minus the threat of salmonella (which, lets face it, I’ve been building an immunity to since I was 5). #boxerramen#pokpokportland#acehotelportland#powellsbooks
It's Raining!!!! A perfect time to get inside and cozy up to a bowl of soup, better yet a bowl of ramen @boxerramen. I got the Tonkotsu shio mixed with spicy red miso. Pair that with an order of okonomiyaki tots, and you've got the start to a great night in...... I also ordered the pot sticker, I have never said no to pot stickers. Definitely worth the extra room I had to make in my stomach.
Alright friends, we’re just going to jump right in. Last night Andy and I tried Boxer Ramen for the first time. We both ordered their Tonkotsu Shio, and it served us all the bacon-and-eggs/breakfast ramen realness I’d been dreaming of. The anime-inspired murals, hipster staff, and chill wave beats made the little nook that is Boxer Ramen all the more cozy.
Somewhere along this weird and wonderful journey we all know and love, ramen became my foodie home. Luckily, I’ve recently relocated to an area where there’s copious amounts of the dish itself, along with endless food categories and cultures. I’d like to dedicate this page to trying all the different foods the PNW has to offer.
Right now ramen is my jam, and next week it might be Ethiopian wat. But no matter where my food journey takes me, you can always bet that I’ll be Pleased as Munch. And that’s the kind of cheese you can expect from this food blog. Farewell, and goodnight.
